Official 2002-03 and 2003-04 MSHSAA Enrollments and Standard Breaks
3/6/2002
SCHOOL ENROLLMENT & ACTIVITY CLASSIFICATION By Stacy Schroeder
2002-03 & 2003-04 ALPHABETICAL AND NUMERICAL ENROLLMENTS The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) uses senior high school enrollment figures (grades 9-12) for classification purposes. These enrollments will be used for classifications during the 2002-03 and 2003-04 school years. All-boys and all-girls school figures are doubled. MSHSAA utilizes the enrollment data submitted to the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for our public school members, and data submitted to the respective accrediting organizations for our nonpublic members.
TWO-YEAR CLASSIFICATION CYCLES MSHSAA member school enrollments are collected every year. In odd years (2001-2002), these enrollments are collected in order for the Board to classify football schools and to set the standard enrollment breaks used by basketball and a variety of other activities, for the upcoming two year cycle (2002-03 and 2003-04).
ACTIVITY CLASSIFICATIONS The activities sponsored by MSHSAA (that have more than 129 schools registered) are broken into classifications in different ways. When standard enrollment breaks are used, schools are placed into classes based on the school's enrollment and the breaks set by the Board. When equal breaks are used, schools participating in that particular sport are arranged in enrollment order and the total number is divided by the number of classes allowed (By-Law 312). Therefore, there will be approximately the same number of schools in each class and the enrollment breaks are determined after the schools are divided.
STANDARD ENROLLMENT BREAKS SET BY BOARD – NEW 5-CLASS SYSTEM The standard enrollment breaks are set by the MSHSAA Board of Directors every two years in an effort to create classes that are comprised of schools of equitable size for district and state tournament competition. For the first time, the 2002-03 and 2003-04 Cycle Standard Enrollment Breaks are structured for five classes. This change is due to a by-law change adopted by the MSHSAA member schools, which stipulates five classes for any activity that has 514 or more schools participating. Currently, only music and basketball have participation levels meeting this requirement. For the standard enrollment breaks, MSHSAA Board policy places 96 schools in 5A, 96 schools in 4A; 128 schools in 1A; 128 schools in 2A and the remainder in 3A.
The 2002-03 and 2003-04 standard enrollment breaks are as follows:
1A - 118 and below
2A - 119 – 241
3A - 242 – 519
4A - 520 – 1080
5A - 1081 and above
