Click the Link Above! National Boys’ Basketball Top 25 March 21, 2002 1. Lincoln High (Dallas, Texas) – (40-0) *1 Recent Results: Beat Roosevelt High, 62-49, in the Class 4A state semifinals; beat then-No. 9 Ozen High, 71-51, in the Class 4A state title game. Notes: Lincoln capped an incredible undefeated season and clinched the national title by easily beating nationally ranked Ozen in the state championship game. In a battle of talented big men, Lincoln’s Chris Bosh (tournament MVP) tallied 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks, while Ozen’s Kendrick Perkins had 20 points, 14 boards and five swats. But Bosh won where it counted — on the scoreboard. We’d also be remiss if we didn’t mention Lincoln guard Bryan Hopkins, who came up big for the Tigers all year and scored 15 in the semifinal win over Roosevelt. Hopkins played with an injured toe against Ozen but still finished with nine points. SEASON OVER 2. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) – (32-1) *2 Recent Results: Beat Our Savior New American (N.Y.), 78-59; beat Notre Dame Academy (Va.), 85-71. Notes: Oak Hill finished its season with 32 wins, but it’s that loss to Mater Dei High (Calif.) last month that the Warriors will remember. That setback will prevent Oak Hill from winning its second straight national title. SEASON OVER 3. Vashon High (St. Louis, Mo.) – (29-1) *3 Recent Results: Beat Jefferson City High, 64-39, in the Class 4A state semifinals; beat DeSmet Jesuit High, 82-27, in the Class 4A state title game. Notes: Vashon wasn’t even tested in winning its third consecutive state championship, as the Wolverines won their final two games by an average margin of 40 points. The 55-point victory over DeSmet in the finals set a state record for margin of victory in a title game. In the championship contest, Missouri-bound guard Jimmy McKinney scored 26 points and St. Louis-bound big man Nicholas Kern added 23 points and five boards. Vashon’s only loss came to No. 9 St. Vincent-St. Mary (Ohio). SEASON OVER 4. St. Anthony High (Jersey City, N.J.) – (28-1) *5 Recent Results: Beat Bergen Catholic High, 66-55, in the Tournament of Champions semifinals. Notes: A nearly two-week layoff between games didn’t hurt the Friars, as they shot 54 percent from the field in beating Bergen Catholic. St. John’s-bound point guard Elijah Ingram scored a game-high 25 points and Marcus Williams chipped in with 10 points. In the TOC finals, St. Anthony will face Neptune High, which is the only team to beat the Friars this season. 5. Rainier Beach High (Seattle, Wash.) – (28-1) *6 Recent Results: Beat Mercer Island High, 67-51, in the Class 3A state title game. Notes: Rainier Beach completed a run of four wins in four days by beating Mercer Island in the state finals. In the championship game, Nate Robinson and Rodrick Stewart each scored 19 points and Lodrick Stewart added 15 for the Vikings, who lost in last year’s state finals. Rainier Beach’s only loss this season was to nationally ranked Cedar Hill High (Texas). If not for that setback, the Vikings might be in the fray for the national title. SEASON OVER 6. Westchester High (Los Angeles, Calif.) – (31-2) *7 Recent Results: Beat then-No. 17 Long Beach Poly High, 66-60, in the CIF SoCal Division I finals. Notes: Westchester got a big-time test from Poly in the SoCal finals, losing a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter before recovering to earn the win. Brandon Heath, who scored 17 points, nailed a 3-pointer with less than two minutes remaining to put the Comets up for good. Brandon Bowman also scored 17 for Westchester, while Hassan Adams added 13. Westchester will face new No. 21 Oakland Tech in the Division I state title game on Saturday. 7. Rice High (New York, N.Y.) – (27-2) *8 Recent Results: Beat All Hallows High, 62-57, in the CHSAA finals. Notes: Rice hasn’t played since winning the CHSAA title last Wednesday, but the team will be back in action Friday against PSAL champ Lincoln High in the semifinals of the Class A State Federation Tournament. Lincoln features sensational sophomore point guard Sebastian Telfair, the cousin of Stephon Marbury. 8. Amityville High (Amityville, N.Y.) – (24-2) *10 Recent Results: Beat Bishop Kearney High, 77-54, in the state public schools Class B semifinals; beat Peekskill High, 67-57, in the state public schools Class B championship game. Notes: Behind another dominating performance from center Jason Fraser, Amityville became the first team in state history to win three straight public schools Class B state championships. In the semifinals, Fraser dropped 29 points and 18 rebounds on Kearney. In the finals, he outplayed UConn-bound big man Hilton Armstrong to the tune of 19 points, a tournament-record 25 rebounds and five blocks. Amityville has one more game remaining, as the Warriors will play either St. Mary’s or Wings Academy in the State Federation Class B title game on Saturday. 9. St. Vincent-St. Mary High (Akron, Ohio) – (22-3) *11 Recent Results: Beat Ottawa-Glandorf High, 77-58, in the Division II regional finals. Notes: LeBron James had a spectacular all-around performance in the regional finals, tallying 21 points, 16 boards, nine assists and four blocks, but he got some serious help from junior forward Romeo Travis, who netted 31 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in the win. Travis, who averaged just 11.4 points per game during the regular season, is averaging 21.4 points so far during the postseason. Combined with James, who was named the Division II state Player of the Year, that’s a dangerous two-headed attack on offense. SVSM will play Poland Seminary (23-2) in the Division II state semifinals on Thursday. 10. DeMatha Catholic High (Hyattsville, Md.) – (32-3) *13 Recent Results: Beat St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.), 41-36, in the semifinals of the Alhambra Tournament; beat Bishop O’Connell High, 68-63, in the Alhambra Tournament championship game. Notes: DeMatha moves into the Top 10 after concluding a stellar season by winning its 18th Alhambra Tournament title over the weekend, beating a tough O’Connell squad for the third time in four games this season. Maryland-bound forward Travis Garrison recorded 24 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks in the finals after scoring a season-high 30 in the low-scoring semifinal win over St. Joseph’s Prep. The Stags’ 32 wins this season rank as the third most in school history. SEASON OVER 11. Brookhaven High (Columbus, Ohio) – (25-1) *14 Recent Results: Beat Centerville High, 78-61, in the Division I regional finals. Notes: The Bearcats are two wins away from the Division I sate title after downing Centerville in the regional finals. Center Brandon Foust scored 20 points and Andrew Lavender added 13 points and nine assists in the victory over Centerville. Brookhaven will face St. Edward High in the state semifinals on Friday. 12. Miami Christian High (Miami, Fla.) – (38-2) *15 Recent Results: Beat Bronson High, 79-49, in the Class 1A state title game. Notes: Tournament MVP Carlos Rivera scored 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and point guard Jose Juan Barea added 17 points and six assists as Miami Christian won the state title with an easy win over Bronson. With 38 victories this year, Miami Christian broke the state record for most wins in a season, which was previously 37. The Victors finished the season on a 29-game winning streak. SEASON OVER 13. Sunnyslope High (Phoenix, Ariz.) – (29-1) *16 Recent Results: Beat Page High, 61-55, in the Class 4A state title game. Notes: Sunnyslope won the state championship back on Feb. 21. It was the school’s first boys’ basketball state title. SEASON OVER 14. West Rowan High (Mt. Ulla, N.C.) – (30-0) *18 Recent Results: Beat Parkland High, 80-68, in the Class 3-A state title game. Notes: The Falcons capped their first undefeated season in school history by holding off Parkland in the state championship game. Donte Minter earned game MVP honors after scoring 29 points, while Phillip Williams added 22 points to be named Most Outstanding Player for West Rowan. Junior Hairston grabbed 14 rebounds for the Falcons. SEASON OVER 15. Centennial High (Compton, Calif.) – (31-1) *19 Recent Results: Beat Bishop Montgomery High, 56-47, in the CIF SoCal Division III finals. Notes: Centennial avenged its lone loss of the season by pulling away in the fourth quarter for a nine-point win over Bishop Montgomery in the SoCal title game. Dominguez transfer Darius Sanders scored 15 points and Arron Afflalo led the Apaches with 18 points. Centennial will face Archbishop Riordan High (30-4) in the Division III state championship game this Saturday. 16. Charlestown High (Charlestown, Mass.) – (27-0) *20 Recent Results: Beat Groton-Dunstable High, 88-68, in the Division 2 state title game. Notes: The Townies won their third straight state championship with a 20-point rout of Groton-Dunstable in the finals. Alray Taylor scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Florida-bound Rashid Al-Kaleem had 20 points and 10 boards, and Tony Chatman added 11 points and 10 assists for Charlestown. The Townies, who are 79-1 over the past three seasons, may go down as one of the top teams in state history. SEASON OVER 17. Putnam City High (Oklahoma City, Okla.) – (27-1) *21 Recent Results: Beat Broken Arrow High, 68-66, in OT in the Class 6A state semifinals; beat Tulsa Union High, 55-53, in the Class 6A state title game. Notes: Putnam City recorded a pair of two-point victories in the state semifinals and finals to win its first state title in three decades. In the championship, Keith Smith scored 18 points and pulled down 13 boards in a game in which Putnam City didn’t lead until the final minute. The Pirates’ only loss this season came to No. 3 Vashon High (Mo.). SEASON OVER 18. Booker T. Washington High (Tulsa, Okla.) – (27-0) *22 Recent Results: Beat Ardmore High, 81-78, in the Class 5A state title game. Notes: Washington won its 39th consecutive game, finished the season undefeated and earned its 13th state title by holding off Ardmore in the championship game. Guard Levi Harris scored nine of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter against Ardmore, while Quentin Chaney added 16 points and 14 boards for the Hornets. SEASON OVER 19. Douglass High (Baltimore, Md.) – (28-0) *NR Recent Results: Beat Gwynn Park High, 76-72, in the Class 3A state title game. Notes: Douglass capped an unbeaten season a couple weeks ago by winning the state championship. Tyler Smith led Douglass with 25 points, while Richard Dorsey added 20 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks. SEASON OVER 20. White Station High (Memphis, Tenn.) – (36-2) *NR Recent Results: Beat Science Hill, 59-45, in the Class AAA state title game. Notes: White Station dropped out of the Top 25 a few weeks ago, but the Spartans redeemed themselves by winning the state title. The same balanced scoring attack that led the way all season for White Station was in full force in the state finals. Melvin Wilkes scored 12 points, while Dane Bradshaw, Fred Harris and Leon Pattman scored 11 apiece. SEASON OVER 21. Oakland Tech (Oakland, Calif.) – (28-3) *NR Recent Results: Beat De La Salle High, 65-61, in OT in the CIF NorCal Division I finals. Notes: Oakland Tech won the NorCal title last weekend by holding off De La Salle, which was ranked in the Top 25 at one point this season. Senior point guard Armondo Surratt scored 11 of his 24 points in overtime and superstar junior forward Leon Powe chipped in with 17 points. Tech’s stay in the Top 25 could be very short, however, as the Bulldogs will play No. 6 Westchester in the Division I state championship game on Saturday. 22. Vincent High (Milwaukee, Wis.) – (23-1) *4 Recent Results: Lost to Wauwatosa East High, 43-41, in the Division I state quarterfinals. Notes: Tough break for Vincent, which just a few weeks ago was in the national championship mix. The Vikings saw their 45-game winning streak come to an end against Tosa East, which was the last team to beat Vincent back in December 2000. Although Vincent’s postseason came to a halt sooner than expected, one loss for a team that spent most of the season in the Top 10 won’t knock the Vikings from the rankings. SEASON OVER 23. Marietta High (Marietta, Ga.) – (30-1) *23 Recent Results: Lost to Lakeside High, 78-64, in the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals. Notes: Marietta was stunned by Lakeside in the state quarterfinals. Wake Forest-bound power forward Chris Ellis led Marietta with 14 points and guard Jazz Ross scored 13, but the Blue Devils couldn’t overcome 18 turnovers and a near-perfect performance from Lakeside. Although Marietta’s season didn’t end with a state title, a 30-1 record keeps the Blue Devils in the Top 25. SEASON OVER 24. Cedar Hill High (Cedar Hill, Texas) – (32-3) *24 Recent Results: Lost to Midland Lee High, 67-62, in the Class 5A regional semifinals. Notes: Less than a week after scoring a huge win over then-nationally ranked The Colony High, Cedar Hill’s march toward the Class 5A state title ended with an upset loss to Midland Lee in the regional semifinals. Michigan-bound guard Daniel Horton scored 19 points but made just 7-of-25 field goals. It was a stunning turn of events for a team that was ranked No. 2 in the nation a month ago. Although Cedar Hill has three losses on its record, wins over No. 5 Rainier Beach and The Colony and a narrow loss to No. 1 Lincoln prove this team is still one of the nation’s best. SEASON OVER 25. Ozen High (Beaumont, Texas) – (32-3) *25 Recent Results: Beat Fort Worth Dunbar High, 55-53, in the Class 4A state semifinals; lost to No. 1 Lincoln High, 71-51, in the Class 4A state title game. Notes: Junior center Kendrick Perkins scored 20 points, grabbed 14 boards and blocked five shots in his showdown with Lincoln’s Chris Bosh, but it wasn’t enough as the Panthers fell to the nation’s top team. We thought about dropping Ozen from the rankings, but losing to the No. 1 team is nothing to be ashamed of. Besides, one of Ozen’s other losses was to No. 7 Rice. SEASON OVER Dropped Out: No. 9 Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) – (29-5) Recent Results: Lost to King High, 70-65, in the CIF SoCal Division II finals. Notes: The Monarchs saw their 22-game winning streak and bid for a second straight state title come to an end after losing to King in the SoCal finals. Mike Strawberry scored 18 points and Wesley Washington added 13 for Mater Dei, which committed 21 turnovers. It was tough to drop the Monarchs from the rankings, especially considering they handed No. 2 Oak Hill its only loss of the season. But five losses are simply too many to keep Mater Dei in the Top 25 without a state title. SEASON OVER No. 12 Lanphier High (Springfield, Ill.) – (32-2) Recent Results: Lost to Westinghouse High, 76-72, in the Class AA state title game. Notes: Lanphier fell one game short of its first state title in 19 years after running out of steam in the championship game. Arkansas-bound forward Andre Iguodala led the Lions with 29 points in the loss. Lanphier was another tough call to drop from the Top 25, but the Lions lost to two unranked teams, didn’t beat a ranked team and failed to win a state title. No Top 25 squad can say that. SEASON OVER No. 17 Long Beach Poly High (Long Beach, Calif.) – (30-4) Recent Results: Lost to then-No. 7 Westchester High, 66-60, in the CIF SoCal Division I finals. Notes: After erasing a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and actually taking the lead with two minutes remaining, Poly saw its season come to an end with a six-point setback to Westchester. Like Mater Dei and Lanphier, we struggled long and hard over whether to drop Poly from the rankings. In the end, four losses combined with not winning a state title was the Jackrabbits’ undoing. At least Poly fans can take solace in finishing the football season in the Top 25. SEASON OVER *: last week’s ranking Regional Boys’ Basketball Rankings March 21, 2002 Northeast 1. St. Anthony High (Jersey City, N.J.) – (28-1) 2. Rice High (New York, N.Y.) – (27-2) 3. Amityville High (Amityville, N.Y.) – (24-2) 4. DeMatha Catholic High (Hyattsville, Md.) – (32-3)* 5. Lincoln High (Dallas, Texas) – (38-0) *1 Recent Results: Beat Terrell High, 90-33, in the Class 4A regional semifinals; beat South Oak Cliff High, 75-34, in the regional finals. Notes: Behind the play of power forward Chris Bosh and shooting guard Bryan Hopkins, Lincoln cruised into the Class 4A state tournament with two more dominating wins last weekend. The Tigers have won their four postseason games by a gaping margin of 39 points per game. Things should get tougher from here, however, as Lincoln will face Roosevelt High in the state semifinals on Thursday and could face No. 9 Ozen High in the state title game on Saturday if both teams win in the semifinals. 2. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) – (32-1) *2 Recent Results: Beat Our Savior New American (N.Y.), 78-59; beat Notre Dame Academy (Va.), 85-71. Notes: Oak Hill finished its season with 32 wins, but it’s that loss to No. 10 Mater Dei High (Calif.) last month that the Warriors will remember. Most likely, that setback will prevent Oak Hill from winning its second straight national title. SEASON OVER 3. Vashon High (St. Louis, Mo.) – (27-1) *3 Recent Results: Beat Chaminade High, 80-50, in the Class 4A state quarterfinals. Notes: Missouri-bound guard Jimmy McKinney scored 31 and St. Louis-bound big man Nicholas Kern poured in 21 points as Vashon routed Chaminade in the state quarterfinals to earn a spot in the semifinals for the fifth consecutive season. The Wolverines, who are seeking their third straight state title, will face Jefferson City High in the semifinals on Friday. 4. Vincent High (Milwaukee, Wis.) – (21-0) *4 Recent Results: Beat Madison High, 91-67, in the Division I, Sectional 5 quarterfinals. Notes: Vincent started its postseason run by getting a game-high 38 points from Greg Brown in a blowout win over Madison. Carl Landry added 18 points and Maurice Wade scored 16 for Vincent, which will play Waukesha South High in the sectional semifinals on Friday. 5. St. Anthony High (Jersey City, N.J.) – (26-1) *5 Recent Results: Beat Eastern Christian, 72-42, in the Parochial B North sectional quarterfinals; beat Newark Academy, 78-42, in the North sectional semifinals; beat St. Patrick’s High, 64-45, in the North sectional finals. Notes: In a rematch of last year’s North sectional championship, St. Anthony once again emerged victorious on Wednesday night over St. Patrick’s. St. John’s-bound point guard Elijah Ingram paced the Friars with 25 points, while Donald Copeland added 18 points. St. Anthony will face St. Rose in the Parochial B finals on Saturday. 6. Rainier Beach High (Seattle, Wash.) – (28-1) *6 Recent Results: Beat Hanford High, 85-61, in the Class 3A state quarterfinals; beat Mark Morris High, 62-53, in the Class 3A state semifinals; beat Mercer Island High, 67-51, in the Class 3A state title game. Notes: Rainier Beach completed a run of four wins in four days by beating Mercer Island in the state finals on Saturday and becoming the first team in the Top 25 to finish its season with a state title. SEASON OVER 7. Westchester High (Los Angeles, Calif.) – (29-2) *9 Recent Results: Beat then-No. 19 Fairfax High, 57-50, in the CIF City Section finals; beat Thousand Oaks High, 89-52, in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division I tournament. Notes: The Comets won their third straight City Championship by beating nationally ranked Fairfax for the third time this season. Point guard Ashanti Cook scored 11 and shooting guard Hassan Adams added 10 points in the win over Fairfax. Adams led the way with 21 against Thousand Oaks, while Keith Everage and Trevor Ariza chipped in 12 points apiece. Top-seeded Westchester will face fourth-seeded Clovis West High (27-3) in the SoCal semifinals on Saturday. If the Comets win, they will play the winner of the other Division I semifinal game between newly ranked Long Beach Poly High and old friend Fairfax. 8. Rice High (New York, N.Y.) – (24-2) *10 Recent Results: Beat All Hallows High, 75-52, in the New York Diocesan Tournament finals. Notes: Rice utilized a devastating inside-outside game and a balanced attack to rout a tough All Hallows squad. The Raiders nailed 7-of-14 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 37-21 halftime lead. Steve Burtt Jr. had 18 points and seven assists, Keydren Clark added 17 points and three assists, Christian Brown chipped in with 16 points and six assists, and 7-foot-2 junior center Shagari Alleyne had 13 points and eight boards. Next up for Rice is Christ the King High in the CHSAA quarterfinals on Thursday. 9. Ozen High (Beaumont, Texas) – (31-2) *11 Recent Results: Beat Texas City High, 55-24, in the Class 4A regional semifinals; beat Waller High, 65-30, in the regional finals. Notes: Junior center Kendrick Perkins scored 23 points as the Panthers routed Waller in the regional finals to advance to their second straight Class 4A state tournament. Much like No. 1 Lincoln, Ozen has yet to be tested in the playoffs. That is likely to change in the state semifinals on Thursday against Fort Worth Dunbar High (33-2). If Ozen starts looking ahead to a possible showdown with Lincoln in the championship game, Dunbar is more than capable of upsetting the Panthers. 10. Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) – (28-4) *13 Recent Results: Beat Pasadena High, 65-49, in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA finals; beat Escondido High, 89-70, in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division II tournament. Notes: Mater Dei won its 10th section championship in the past 11 years as the Monarchs easily handled Pasadena in the Division II-AA title game. Wesley Washington scored 20 points and grabbed 11 boards and Mike Strawberry added 18 points for Mater Dei. The Monarchs then won their 21st consecutive game by defeating Escondido in the SoCal playoffs. Five Mater Dei players scored in double figures against Escondido, led by Harrison Schaen with 17 points. Top-seeded Mater Dei will again play fourth-seeded Pasadena (27-5) in the SoCal Division II semifinals this Saturday. 11. Amityville High (Amityville, N.Y.) – (21-2) *15 Recent Results: Beat Walt Whitman High, 64-62, in the Suffolk County finals. Notes: If there was still any doubt as to whether Amityville center Jason Fraser is one of the best players in the nation, he cleared it up with a monstrous 24-point, 30-rebound performance in the Suffolk overall title game against Whitman. That’s right — 30 rebounds! Fraser single-handedly outrebounded Whitman, which finished with 21 boards. Amityville will face Nassau County champ Bethpage High in the Class B Southeast Regional final/Long Island championship on Saturday. 12. St. Vincent-St. Mary High (Akron, Ohio) – (20-3) *16 Recent Results: Beat Firelands High, 107-47, in the Division II district quarterfinals; beat Hoban High, 72-33, in the district semifinals. Notes: Junior guard LeBron James scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the rout of Firelands as the Irish began the postseason in search of their third straight state title. James scored another 22 against Hoban in the semifinals, while Romeo Travis added 15 points for the Irish. SVSM will play in the district title game on Saturday. 13. Lanphier High (Springfield, Ill.) – (28-1) *18 Recent Results: Beat Danville High, 87-54, in the Class AA Springfield Sectional quarterfinals; beat Lincoln High, 64-52, in the sectional semifinals. Notes: Forward Andre Iguodala scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Niccos Scot added 16 points and 12 boards as Lanphier cruised past Danville in the sectional quarterfinals. Iguodala then scored 17 and Richard McBride chipped in 15 points in the semifinal win over Lincoln. The Lions will take on Mount Zion in the sectional finals this Friday. Mount Zion beat Lanphier in last year’s sectional finals. 14. DeMatha Catholic High (Hyattsville, Md.) – (28-3) *20 Recent Results: Idle. Notes: After winning the WCAC championship last week, DeMatha had the week off to prepare for the D.C. City Title game this Saturday against Spingarn High, which won the DCIAA title. 15. Brookhaven High (Columbus, Ohio) – (22-1) *22 Recent Results: Beat Gahanna High, 63-52, in the Division I district semifinals. Notes: Brookhaven made only 13-of-29 free throws but pulled out the semifinal win over Gahanna thanks to 14 points from Andrew Lavender, 12 from Raheem Moss and 11 from Ronald Lewis. Brookhaven will face Zanesville High (20-3) in the district finals on Saturday. 16. Miami Christian High (Miami, Fla.) – (37-2) *23 Recent Results: Beat Northwest Christian, 65-49, in the Region 4-1A finals; beat FAMU High, 75-64, in the Class A state semifinals. Notes: Point guard Jose Juan Barea scored 16 points in his first game back after missing three weeks due to mono to lead Miami Christian past Northwest Christian in the regional finals. Jesus Verdeto also scored 16 and Carlos Rivera added 15 points. Barea then recorded a triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in the state semifinal win over FAMU. The Victors will face Bronson High in the Class A state title game on Friday. 17. Thomas Johnson High (Frederick, Md.) – (24-1) *24 Recent Results: Beat North County High, 68-35, in the Maryland 4A East semifinals; beat Meade High, 108-77, in the 4A East finals. Notes: Senior guard Jermaine Thomas lit up the scoreboard in the win over Meade, tying a school record by scoring 51 points in a game that Thomas Johnson led 65-27 at the half. Thomas Johnson plays Magruder High in the Class 4A state semifinals on Thursday. 18. Joliet Township High (Joliet, Ill.) – (28-1) *NR Recent Results: Beat Providence Catholic High, 78-53, in the Oak Lawn Sectional quarterfinals; beat Lockport High, 52-39, in the sectional semifinals. Notes: Forward Kellen Easley scored 19 points and hauled down nine rebounds in Joliet’s win against Providence, then led the way with 18 points in the victory over Lockport. The Steelmen limited Lockport to just two field goals in the fourth quarter in the semifinal win. Joliet will play in the sectional finals on Friday. 19. Sunnyslope High (Phoenix, Ariz.) – (29-1) *NR Recent Results: Beat Page High, 61-55, in the Class 4A state title game. Notes: Sunnyslope won the state championship back on Feb. 21, but the Vikings finally break into the Top 25 this week thanks to losses by seven ranked teams. It was the school’s first boys’ basketball state title. SEASON OVER 20. Long Beach Poly High (Long Beach, Calif.) – (29-3) *NR Recent Results: Beat then-No. 21 Eisenhower High, 64-53, in the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA finals; beat Loyola High, 80-58, in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division I tournament. Notes: Poly began the season in the Top 25 and finally returns to the rankings this week. Four Jackrabbits scored in double figures against nationally ranked Eisenhower: Reggie Butler and Bobby Jones scored 15 apiece and Marcedes Lewis and Carlos Rivers each scored 12. It was Poly’s third section title in the past six seasons. The Jackrabbits then opened the SoCal playoffs with an easy win over Loyola in which Lewis, a blue-chip tight end on the gridiron, scored a career-high 30 points and Jones added 24. Things now get much tougher for Poly, which will face former nationally ranked Fairfax High in the SoCal Division I semifinals on Saturday. The winner of that game will likely face No. 7 Westchester in the SoCal finals. 21. West Rowan High (Mt. Ulla, N.C.) – (27-0) *NR Recent Results: Beat Asheboro High, 70-47, in the Class 3-A West sectional semifinals; beat Sun Valley High, 82-59, in the Class 3-A West sectional finals. Notes: Junior Hairston led West Rowan with 24 points in the sectional championship win over Sun Valley, while Donte Minter added 19 points to surpass the 2,000-point mark for his career. West Rowan will face Ashbrook High in the Class 3-A West Regional semifinals on Friday. 22. Centennial High (Compton, Calif.) – (29-1) *12 Recent Results: Lost to Bishop Montgomery High, 57-55, in the CIF Southern Section Division III-A finals; beat Bakersfield East High, 63-51, in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division III tournament. Notes: Centennial saw its unbeaten season come to an end in the Division III-A championship game against defending state champ Bishop Montgomery. Darius Sanders led the Apaches with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss. However, Centennial bounced back with a win over Bakersfield East to open the SoCal Division III playoffs and save its spot in the Top 25. Sanders had 15 points and 14 boards in the win over Bakersfield. Centennial will face Washington Union High (24-5) in the SoCal semifinals on Saturday. 23. Charlestown High (Charlestown, Mass.) – (24-0) *NR Recent Results: Beat Winchester High, 99-57, in the Division 2 North quarterfinals; beat Westford Academy, 104-62, in the Division 2 North semifinals. Notes: Charlestown, the top team in Massachusetts and the two-time defending state champ, makes its debut in the Top 25 this week. University of Florida-bound guard Rashid Al-Kaleem poured in 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the victory over Winchester. Then, with Al-Kaleem hobbled by an injured ankle, forward Cori Boston scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and guard Tony Lee added 22 points and six assists in the win over Westford. The Townies will play Lynn English High in the Division 2 North finals on Saturday. 24. Marietta High (Marietta, Ga.) – (30-1) *7 Recent Results: Lost to Lakeside High, 78-64, in the Class AAAAA state quarterfinals; beat Pope High, 56-45, in the second round. Notes: Marietta got past Pope in the second round but was stunned by Lakeside in the state quarterfinals. Wake Forest-bound power forward Chris Ellis led Marietta with 14 points and guard Jazz Ross scored 13, but the Blue Devils couldn’t overcome 18 turnovers and a near-perfect performance from Lakeside (26-5). Although Marietta’s season didn’t end with a state title, a 30-1 record keeps the Blue Devils in the Top 25 for now. SEASON OVER 25. Cedar Hill High (Cedar Hill, Texas) – (32-3) *8 Recent Results: Lost to Midland Lee High, 67-62, in the Class 5A regional semifinals. 2 in the nation just a couple weeks ago. With three losses, we considered dropping the Longhorns from the Top 25, but a bevy of other ranked teams losing may have saved Cedar Hill. Besides, wins over No. 6 Rainier Beach and The Colony and a narrow loss to No. 1 Lincoln prove this team is one of the nation’s best. SEASON OVER Dropped Out: No. 14 White Station High (Memphis, Tenn.) – (33-2) Recent Results: Lost to Hamilton High, 63-58, in the Region 8-AAA finals; beat Bolton High, 47-35, in the Class AAA sectionals. Notes: White Station falls from the rankings this week after suffering its second loss to an unranked team. Luckily for the Spartans, they still advanced to the sectional playoffs, where they took care of business against Bolton. Next up for White Station are the state quarterfinals on March 14. If the Spartans keep winning, they might break back into the Top 25. No. 17 Oxon Hill High (Oxon Hill, Md.) – (22-2) Recent Results: Beat Largo High, 59-44, in the Maryland 4A South semifinals; lost to Eleanor Roosevelt High, 55-45, in the 4A South finals. Notes: Oxon Hill ran out of comeback magic in the 4A South finals against Eleanor Roosevelt. The Clippers have made a living out of second-half rallies this season and trailed Roosevelt by just four points heading into the final quarter. But Roosevelt put the game away by outscoring Oxon Hill 25-19 in the fourth quarter to end the Clippers’ season. SEASON OVER No. 19 Fairfax High (Los Angeles, Calif.) – (30-4) Recent Results: Lost to No. 7 Westchester High, 57-50, in the CIF City Section finals; beat Carlsbad High, 65-49, in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division I tournament. Notes: Fairfax fell for the third time this season to Westchester, but this was the one that mattered most. UCLA-bound small forward Evan Burns scored a game-high 20 points in the losing effort. However, Fairfax still advanced to the SoCal playoffs, where they handled Carlsbad in first-round action. Burns missed the game with a hand injury that required stitches, but freshman Jamal Boykin scored a team-high 13 points off the bench. Fairfax will get a chance to play itself back into the Top 25 in the next two weeks. The Lions will face new No. 20 Long Beach Poly in the Division I semifinals this Saturday, with the winner likely to play Westchester in the finals the following week. If Fairfax and Westchester meet in the championship game, it would be the fifth time this season they have played (Westchester leads the season series, 3-1). It is unknown whether Burns will be in the lineup against Poly. No. 21 Eisenhower High (Rialto, Calif.) – (27-4) Recent Results: Lost to new No. 20 Long Beach Poly High, 64-53, in the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA finals; lost to lost to Clovis West High, 69-58, in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division I tournament. Notes: Eisenhower’s season came crashing to a halt in the past week with a pair of losses. Sean Marshall scored a game-high 21 points in the loss to Poly. SEASON OVER No. 25 The Colony High (The Colony, Texas) – (29-3) Recent Results: Lost to then-No. 8 Cedar Hill High, 56-50, in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals. Notes: A week after dropping all the way to No. 25 following a loss to Cedar Hill, The Colony drops completely out of the rankings after Cedar Hill suffered a loss in its next game. Cedar Hill’s loss dropped it to No. 25, meaning The Colony had to drop even further. At least guard Bracey Wright will get to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game. Lincoln High (Dallas, Texas) – (36-0) *1 Recent Results: Beat Waxahachie High, 84-55, in the Class 4A area playoffs; beat Waco University High, 84-54, in the regional quarterfinals. Notes: The nation’s top team cruised through the first two rounds of the Class 4A postseason with almost identical scores. In the win over Waxahachie, Chris Bosh and Kevis Shipman each scored 20 and Bryan Hopkins added 16. Hopkins scored 18 and Bosh 17 against Waco. Lincoln will face Terrell High in the regional semifinals on Friday. Four more wins and the Tigers can celebrate both a state and a national title. As an added bonus, Bosh was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Wednesday. 2. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) – (32-1) *2 Recent Results: Beat Our Savior New American (N.Y.), 78-59; beat Notre Dame Academy (Va.), 85-71. Notes: Oak Hill finished its season with two more wins last week, but it’s that loss to No. 13 Mater Dei High (Calif.) a few weeks ago that the Warriors will remember. Most likely, that setback will prevent Oak Hill from winning its second straight national title. Small forward Carmelo Anthony, who was named a McDonald’s All-American on Wednesday, scored 20 in the win over Notre Dame. SEASON OVER 3. Vashon High (St. Louis, Mo.) – (26-1) *3 Recent Results: Beat Roosevelt High, 68-41; beat Gateway Tech, 92-51, to win the District 7-4A title; beat Vianney High, 93-37, in the Class 4A sectionals. Notes: The duo of Jimmy McKinney and Nicholas Kern was at it again last week. McKinney scored 30 against Roosevelt and Kern led the way with 25 points against Gateway. Next up for Vashon is a date with Chaminade High in the Class 4A quarterfinals on Saturday. 4. Vincent High (Milwaukee, Wis.) – (20-0) *4 Recent Results: Idle. Notes: The Vikings had the week off after beating Washington High in their final regular-season game. Next up for Vincent is the Division 1, Sectional 5 tournament beginning on Saturday. 5. St. Anthony High (Jersey City, N.J.) – (23-1) *5 Recent Results: Beat Camden Catholic High, 58-43. Notes: The Friars knocked off a very tough Camden Catholic squad behind 18 points from St. John’s-bound point guard Elijah Ingram, who was named a McDonald’s All-American on Wednesday. St. Anthony will compete in the Parochial B North quarterfinals on Friday against either Oratory Prep or Eastern Christian. 6. Rainier Beach High (Seattle, Wash.) – (25-1) *6 Recent Results: Beat Mercer Island High, 46-43, in the Sea-King District finals; beat Aberdeen High, 88-53, in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament. Notes: The Vikings won their fourth consecutive district championship with the win over Mercer Island, but it didn’t come easy. Rainier Beach trailed by seven at the half and needed a 15-8 fourth-quarter advantage to come out on top. In the win over Aberdeen, Nate Robinson led the way with 29 points and Lodrick Stewart added 24. 7. Marietta High (Marietta, Ga.) – (29-0) *7 Recent Results: Beat Southwest DeKalb High, 76-60, in the first round of the Class AAAAA state tournament. Notes: Wake Forest-bound power forward Chris Ellis missed his second straight game with a sprained ankle, but it hardly mattered for Marietta. Guard Keyon Boyd led the way with 22 points and forward Patrick Ewing Jr. added 14 points and six blocks. 8. Cedar Hill High (Cedar Hill, Texas) – (32-2) *8 Recent Results: Beat Lewisville High, 59-47, in the Class 5A area playoffs; beat then-No. 12 The Colony High, 56-50, in the regional quarterfinals. Notes: Revenge was sweet for Cedar Hill on Tuesday night, as the Longhorns avenged last year’s postseason loss by knocking nationally ranked The Colony out of the Class 5A playoffs. Michigan-bound guard Daniel Horton scored a game-high 26 points for Cedar Hill, which will face Midland Lee High in the regional semifinals on Friday night. Horton was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Wednesday. 9. Westchester High (Los Angeles, Calif.) – (27-2) *9 Recent Results: Beat Fremont High, 83-63, in the CIF City Section semifinals. Notes: Trevor Ariza scored 18 points to lead six Westchester players in double figures as the Comets handled Fremont in the City Section semifinals. Brandon Heath and Ashanti Cook added 15 points apiece. Senior guard Hassan Adams was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Wednesday. Westchester will face No. 19 Fairfax High in the City Section finals on Saturday. Fairfax is one of only two teams (along with No. 2 Oak Hill) to beat Westchester this season. This one should be a classic. 10. Rice High (New York, N.Y.) – (24-2) *10 Recent Results: Beat St. Peter’s, 91-47, in the CHSAA playoffs. Notes: Junior center Shagari Alleyne scored 18 points and Steve Burtt chipped in with 15 as Rice began postseason play with an easy victory over St. Peter’s. 11. Ozen High (Beaumont, Texas) – (29-2) *11 Recent Results: Beat Shoemaker High, 70-35, in the Class 4A area playoffs; beat Belton High, 52-37, in the regional quarterfinals. Notes: Junior center Kendrick Perkins scored 25 points in the win over Belton and led the way against Shoemaker with 20 points, 10 boards, eight blocks, eight steals and six assists. Ozen will play Texas City High in the regional semifinals on Friday. 12. Centennial High (Compton, Calif.) – (28-0) *13 Recent Results: Beat Muir High, 50-43, in the CIF Southern Section Division III-A semifinals. Notes: The Apaches erased a five-point deficit in the final quarter to pull out a win over Muir in the Division III-A semifinals. Guard Gabriel Pruitt scored a game-high 20 points for Centennial, which will face defending state champ Bishop Montgomery (23-6) in the Division III-A finals on Saturday. 13. Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) – (26-4) *14 Recent Results: Beat Woodbridge High, 74-58, in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA quarterfinals; beat St. John Bosco High, 69-55, in the Division II-AA semifinals. Notes: Mater Dei got 19 points from Mike Strawberry and 16 from Wesley Washington and outscored Woodbridge 23-5 in the second quarter to cruise through the quarterfinals. The Monarchs then won their 19th consecutive game as Washington tallied 20 points and 11 boards in the semifinal win over St. John Bosco. Mater Dei will face Pasadena High (26-4) in the Division II-AA finals on Saturday. 14. White Station High (Memphis, Tenn.) – (32-1) *15 Recent Results: Beat Fairley High, 62-44, in the Region 8-AAA quarterfinals; beat Whitehaven High, 67-48, in the Region 8-AAA semifinals. Notes: Exactly one year after getting upset by Fairley in the playoffs last season, White Station earned some revenge on the Bulldogs on Tuesday. Manuel Burton led White Station with 14 points in the win over Fairley and 15 in the victory against Whitehaven in the semifinals. White Station will play Hamilton High in the regional finals Thursday night. 15. Amityville High (Amityville, N.Y.) – (19-2) *16 Recent Results: Beat Harborfields High, 85-41, in the Suffolk Class B semifinals; beat Wyandanch High, 75-40, in the Suffolk Class B finals; beat Greenport High, 94-46, in the Suffolk small schools championship. Notes: Villanova-bound center Jason Fraser, who was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Wednesday, continued his stellar play to lead Amityville to its third straight Suffolk championship. Fraser tallied 21 points, 21 rebounds, seven assists and four blocks in the win over Harborfields. He then contributed 27 points and 20 rebounds against Wyandanch in the Suffolk Class B title game and had 15 points, 16 boards and four blocks against Greenport. 16. St. Vincent-St. Mary High (Akron, Ohio) – (17-3) *17 Recent Results: Beat Central-Hower High, 72-54. Notes: Junior guard LeBron James led the way with 24 points in the win over Central-Hower as SVSM got back on track after two losses in two weeks. 17. Oxon Hill High (Oxon Hill, Md.) – (21-1) *18 Recent Results: Beat Suitland High, 77-70, in the Maryland 4A South quarterfinals. Notes: Senior guard Aaron Parsons scored 18 points to lead Oxon Hill over Suitland for the third time this season. Those three wins have come by a combined 11 points. Oxon Hill trailed by four at the half but outscored Suitland 22-12 in the third quarter. The Clippers will take on Largo this Friday in the 4A South semifinals. 18. Lanphier High (Springfield, Ill.) – (26-1) *19 Recent Results: Beat Lincoln High, 76-62, to win the Central State Eight Conference title; beat Eisenhower High, 79-41, in the first round of the Springfield Lanphier Sectional. Notes: Senior forward Andre Iguodala scored 19 points and junior Richard McBride added 15 points in Lanphier’s win over Lincoln. Lanphier will face Danville High in the sectional semifinals on Friday. 19. Fairfax High (Los Angeles, Calif.) – (29-3) *20 Recent Results: Beat Dorsey High, 68-59, in the CIF City Section semifinals. Notes: UCLA-bound small forward Evan Burns, who was named to the McDonald’s All-American team on Wednesday, scored 15 points as the Lions pulled away in the third quarter to eliminate Dorsey from the City Section semifinals. Kevin Bell scored 15 and Alex Bausley 14 for Fairfax, which will face No. 9 Westchester in the finals this Saturday. Fairfax will be looking to win its first City Section title since 1987. 20. DeMatha Catholic High (Hyattsville, Md.) – (28-3) *21 Recent Results: Beat Paul VI (Va.), 54-47, in the WCAC semifinals; beat Bishop O’Connell High (Va.), 60-50, in the WCAC finals. Notes: Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten won his 33rd conference championship as DeMatha held off O’Connell in the WCAC title game. Senior guard Warren Williams scored a game-high 19 points for the Stags, who also got 12 each from Travis Garrison and Steve Danley. Garrison was named a McDonald’s All-American on Wednesday. DeMatha is off until March 9, when the Stags will play for the City Title against the DCIAA champ. 21. Eisenhower High (Rialto, Calif.) – (27-2) *22 Recent Results: Beat Lakewood High, 72-68, in the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals; beat Millikan High, 64-44, in the Division I-AA semifinals. Notes: Sean Marshall scored 28 points and Cory McJimson added 21 points and 10 boards as Eisenhower narrowly escaped its quarterfinal game against Lakewood. The Eagles had it a little bit easier in the semifinals against Millikan, as McJimson scored 19 and Marshall chipped in with 16. Eisenhower will play Long Beach Poly High (27-3) in the finals on Saturday. 22. Brookhaven High (Columbus, Ohio) – (21-1) *23 Recent Results: Beat Whetstone High, 107-52, in the first round of the Division I Central District tournament; beat Franklin Heights High, 76-40, in the Division I district quarterfinals. Notes: Raheem Moss scored 19 points and connected on four 3-pointers as Brookhaven routed Franklin Heights in the district quarterfinals. Brookhaven will face Gahanna High in the district semifinals on Monday. 23. Miami Christian High (Miami, Fla.) – (35-2) *24 Recent Results: Beat Gettysburg Academy, 71-30, in the Region 4-1A quarterfinals; beat Upperroom Christian, 79-58, in the Region 4-1A semifinals. Notes: Shooting guard Carlos Rivera had a huge week for the Victors. He scored a game-high 23 points and knocked down seven 3-pointers in the quarterfinal win over Gettysburg. Then, with point guard Jose Juan Barea sidelined with mono against Upperroom Christian, Rivera recorded a triple-double with 25 points, 12 assists and 12 rebounds. Miami Christian will play Northwest Christian in the regional finals on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the state Final Four. 24. Thomas Johnson High (Frederick, Md.) – (22-1) *25 Recent Results: Beat South River High, 109-59, in the Maryland 4A East quarterfinals. Notes: Senior guard Jermaine Thomas continued his stellar play by scoring a game-high 28 points in the win over South River. Thomas led four players in double figures for Thomas Johnson. 25. The Colony High (The Colony, Texas) – (29-3) *12 Recent Results: Beat Arlington Bowie High, 54-49, in the Class 5A area playoffs; lost to No. 8 Cedar Hill High, 56-50, in the regional quarterfinals. Notes: We thought long and hard about whether or not to drop the Cougars from the rankings after losing in the regional quarterfinals to No. 8 Cedar Hill. But although there are some deserving squads to move into the Top 25, we just couldn’t drop The Colony all the way out after a hard-fought, six-point loss to a Top 10 team. It’s just a shame that Cedar Hill and The Colony had to meet so soon in the playoffs. In addition, one of the Cougars’ other losses was to No. 1 Lincoln and they feature three Division I signees in the backcourt — Bracey Wright (Indiana), Deron Williams (Illinois) and Bam Harmon (Rhode Island). Wright was named a McDonald’s All-American on Wednesday. SEASON OVER Dropped Out: None National Boys’ Basketball Top 25 February 21, 2002 1. Lincoln High (Dallas, Texas) – (34-0) *1 Recent Results: Beat then-No. 2 Cedar Hill High, 64-63. Notes: In a game that lived up to the hype, Lincoln held off Cedar Hill in the nightcap of The Dallas Morning News Basketball Classic, which served as a warm-up game for this week’s playoffs. Senior center Chris Bosh tallied 16 points, 14 rebounds, seven blocks and six assists to lead the Tigers to the victory. Lincoln finishes the regular season at 34-0, but now the real season starts. Looming somewhere down the road is a likely showdown with No. 11 Ozen High in the Class 4A playoffs. 2. Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) – (30-1) *3 Recent Results: Beat Blue Ridge School, 85-50; beat Bonner Academy (N.C.), 111-74; beat Faith Christian Center (N.C.), 86-63. Notes: The one-two punch of small forward Carmelo Anthony and point guard Justin Gray led the Warriors to three more wins last week. Gray averaged 23 points and Anthony 22 points in the three victories. Oak Hill, which began the season at No. 2, is back in the runner-up slot this week. But unless Lincoln stumbles in the postseason, the Warriors won’t defend their national title. 3. Vashon High (St. Louis, Mo.) – (24-1) *4 Recent Results: Beat Manley Academy (Ill.), 89-64. Notes: Missouri-bound shooting guard Jimmy McKinney scored 27 points and St. Louis-bound big man Nicholas Kern added 18 points in the win over Manley. Were it not for an early-season loss to St. Vincent-St. Mary High (Ohio), Vashon could be looking at a national championship shot. As it is, the Wolverines would need some serious help to move up to No. 1 before the season is over. 4. Vincent High (Milwaukee, Wis.) – (20-0) *5 Recent Results: Beat Madison High, 87-58; beat Washington High, 60-44, to finish the regular season. Notes: Wisconsin-bound guard Maurice Wade netted 20 points in the win over Madison, while Greg Brown scored 23 against Washington to close out the regular season and give the Vikings their sixth straight Milwaukee City Conference title. Because of its unbeaten record, Vincent still has a shot at the national title if No. 1 Lincoln loses in the playoffs. 5. St. Anthony High (Jersey City, N.J.) – (22-1) *6 Recent Results: Beat Holmdel High, 76-30; beat Our Savior New American (N.Y.), 60-48; beat St. Dominic High (N.Y.), 60-49; beat St. Raymond’s High (N.Y.), 78-58. Notes: St. Anthony has recovered nicely since that loss to Neptune High a month ago and rejoins the top five this week. In the Friars’ win over St. Ray’s, St. Raymond guard Allan Ray (Villanova) played in his first game of the season after suffering a broken foot three months ago. St. Anthony is led by St. John’s-bound point guard Elijah Ingram. 6. Rainier Beach High (Seattle, Wash.) – (23-1) *7 Recent Results: Beat O’Dea High, 73-56; beat Issaquah High, 79-52, in the semifinals of the Sea-King District tournament. Notes: Nate Robinson stepped up big for the Vikings in their semifinal win over Issaquah, scoring a team-high 30 points. Brothers Lodrick and Rodrick Stewart each averaged 19 points in the two wins. Rainier Beach will play Mercer Island High in the district finals on Saturday. 7. Marietta High (Marietta, Ga.) – (28-0) *8 Recent Results: Beat Harrison High, 61-43, in the Region 5-AAAAA finals. Notes: Senior power forward Chris Ellis missed the win over Harrison with a sprained ankle, but point guard Keyon Boyd scored a game-high 20 points and junior guard Jazz Ross added 17 points to lead Marietta to the region title. Marietta, which advanced to the state semifinals last season, will play Southwest DeKalb High in the first round of the state tournament on Friday. 8. Cedar Hill High (Cedar Hill, Texas) – (30-2) *2 Recent Results: Lost to No. 1 Lincoln High, 64-63. Notes: There’s certainly no shame in losing to the No. 1 team in the nation by just one point, which is why Cedar Hill falls only six spots this week and stays in the Top 10. Michigan-bound guard Daniel Horton scored a game-high 22 points in the loss to Lincoln, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Longhorns. Cedar Hill must now refocus and prepare for the Class 5A playoffs, which begin this weekend. A possible postseason rematch with No. 12 The Colony High could be in the Longhorns’ not-too-distant future. Cedar Hill was eliminated from the state quarterfinals last year by The Colony. 9. Westchester High (Los Angeles, Calif.) – (26-2) *10 Recent Results: Beat Cleveland High, 96-41, in the first round of the CIF City Section playoffs; beat Carson High, 94-66, in the City Section quarterfinals. Notes: No. 1 seed Westchester made quick work of Cleveland in the first round of the postseason, as Brandon Bowman scored a game-high 23 points and Hassan Adams added 22 for the Comets. In the quarterfinal victory over Carson, Brandon Heath netted 22 points and Adams added 21. 10. Rice High (New York, N.Y.) – (22-2) *11 Recent Results: Beat Bishop Loughlin High, 88-60. Notes: Rice cruised to a victory in its regular-season finale, getting 26 points from senior Christian Brown and 16 points from sophomore Arturo Dubois in the 28-point win over Loughlin and blue-chip senior forward Curtis Sumpter. Rice will begin postseason action next week. 11. Ozen High (Beaumont, Texas) – (27-2) *12 Recent Results: Beat Livingston High, 91-43. Notes: Junior center Kendrick Perkins scored 28 points and Keena Young added 24 as Ozen finished the regular season with a lopsided win. The Panthers open the Class 4A playoffs this weekend, and a showdown with No. 1 Lincoln could loom somewhere down the road. 12. The Colony High (The Colony, Texas) – (28-2) *13 Recent Results: Beat South Oak Cliff High, 73-62. Notes: The Cougars took care of South Oak Cliff in The Dallas Morning News Basketball Classic on Saturday in a matinee for the Lincoln-Cedar Hill game. Bracey Wright and Co. begin their march toward a Class 5A state title this Friday in the regional playoffs. Standing in the way of that title could be No. 8 Cedar Hill. Last year, The Colony bounced Cedar Hill from the playoffs in the state quarterfinals. 13. Centennial High (Compton, Calif.) – (27-0) *14 Recent Results: Beat Blair High, 110-66, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs; beat Pomona High, 48-46, in the quarterfinals. The Apaches built a couple double-digit leads against Pomona but couldn’t put the game away. Next up for Centennial is a semifinal contest against a very tough Muir High squad (23-5) on Friday. 14. Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) – (24-4) *15 Recent Results: Beat Hemet High, 80-56, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs; beat Antelope Valley High, 101-53, in the second round. Notes: Mater Dei, the No. 1 seed in Division II-AA, certainly played like the favorite in the first two rounds of the postseason. In the first-round win over Hemet, junior center Harrison Schaen scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight earned his 600th victory. McKnight improved his career coaching record to 601-53 with the easy win over Antelope Valley in the second round. Mike Strawberry scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds. 15. Fraser tallied 19 points, 22 rebounds and 10 assists against Mount Sinai, then went for 20 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists versus Babylon. 17. St. Vincent-St. Mary High (Akron, Ohio) – (16-3) *9 Recent Results: Lost to George Jr. Republic High, 58-57, in overtime; beat Orange High, 77-66. Notes: Who says the Sports Illustrated jinx isn’t for real? Just days after LeBron James graced the cover of SI, SVSM lost for the third time this season — and the first time against a non-ranked opponent — when George Jr. Republic knocked off the Irish on Sunday. James did score 20 points in a losing effort. Let’s hope nothing happens to Yamila Diaz-Rahi, who is on the cover of this week’s Swimsuit Issue. The Irish bounced back on Wednesday with a win over Orange in the Big 4 Classic, as James tallied 33 points, six boards and six assists. Since one of SVSM’s losses this season was to Amityville, the Irish fall in right behind the Warriors in this week’s rankings. 18. Notes: UCLA-bound small forward Evan Burns led the way with 30 points and seven rebounds as Fairfax dispatched Locke from the first round of the playoffs. Burns then had 15 points and 17 rebounds in the quarterfinal win over Narbonne. Fairfax, which is the No. 2 seed in the City Section, could be headed for a showdown with national No. 9 Westchester, which is seeded No. 1. If they did face each other in the playoffs, it would mark the fourth meeting this season between Fairfax and Westchester. Westchester won the first two and Fairfax won the third game. 21.
