Posted by Coach Mo at Mar 19, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
While most of team-mates were on spring break or spring term, a group of Phoenix Christian's finest underclassmen participated in our annual invitational at Phoenix College. Domoneek Staten and Bianca Marchand competed in the sprints and hurdles as they prepare for the second half of the season. Both are expected to be key players as the girls team seeks respect in the tough 2A metro. Marchand placed 7th overall in the 100. She placed 13th out of 48 in the 200 with her best time of the year in all three events. Staten has taken well to the challenge of the hurdles. She placed 7th overall, not bad since she spent the past week in a boxing class as part of spring term. The trio of Tyse VanHofwegen, John Vewrmeer and Naje' Singleton all ran well in the 800. A three freshmen fared well against mostly upperclassmen. image

Lady Cougars 2006 Outlook

Posted by Coach Mo at Mar 9, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
It's been years, some say a decade, since Phoenix Christian fielded more than a few girls on the track team as far as numbers are concerened. Last years group made a rumble, but this years team is deep, determined & destined to move out of the boys shadow. SPRINTS Freshman Domoneek Staten is expected to live up to her potential a little earlier than expected. A tough, quick sprinter, she's added the hurdles to her list of duties. She's also expected to show up in the 200 and both sprint relays. Newcomer and freshman Bianca Marchand will give Staten a push in the sprints and hurdles. She also has good 400 meter be range and may be expected to help out in the jumps. DISTANCE Megan VaHofwegen has been the team best runner the past 3 years in every event from the 100 to the 1500. She will return to the 800 this year and is expected to help out on all three relays. Kristen Shook will carry the load in the 3200 and be a factor in the 1500 along with Ashley Cowen, a former sprinter. She's also expected to help out in the 4x400 & 4x800. HURDLES A new strong point for the team as Staten & Marchand have both made a smooth transition to the event. Alex Cisco is also proficient in the event as is Cowen, who may find her way to the low hurdles by seasons end. Monique Williams and Christina Bennett are also learning the event, one that is fast becoming a Lady Cougar strong suit. FIELD EVENT If this samll contengent is to become a contender they will need points here. Hopefully Cisco, Karla Bennett and Aileen Galaz can polish up in field events & provide much needed points. RELAYS
Phoenix Christian's track team kicked off the 2006 season a week late, but it was worth the wait. The girls team, now a dozen strong (up from the usual 5 or 6) showed up with 6 girls and finished second to perinnial power Greenway. Facing teams with an average rostero f 20 girls, Kristen Shook, Megan Van Hofwegen, Domoneek Staten, Alex Cisco, Ashley Cowen and Bianca Marchand piled up points where they could. The Lady Cougars have played 2nd fiddle to the boys for years, Tonite they made a mark and sent a message to the other 2A metro teams. They led off with a 2nd place finish in the 4x800 relay with a squad that featured Shook, VanHofwegen, Cowen & Cisco. The girls 4x100 stole the show blowing away the field as Staten, Marchand, VanHofwagen & Cisco take first place in PC's best 4x100 effort in years. The girls fared well in sprint events as Staten & Marchand placed 2nd in 5th in their first ever 100 meter hurdles races. The two took 3rd & 5th in the 100. The two teamed up with van Hofwegen to take 3 of 5 places in the 200. Shook looks as if she is returning to her freshman form with a 3rd place finish in the 3200. Ashley was 6th in the mile. The boys team fared well despite a scare in the hurdles as Matt Kredit fell on the last hurdle in a tight finish. Region champion Micah kuiper was 3rd in the high jump. The boys 4x800, a source of pride at Phoenix Christian, placed 4th as underclassmen Nick Fitzpatrick, John Vermeer, Naje' Singleton and Tyce VanHofwagen performed well as a group of underclassmen running against seasoned vets. The same group minus Fitz placed 4th in the 4x400. Danny Lazarre, running in his first race in two years, was 3rd in the 100. Freshman Adam Watkins was 5th. Fitzpatrick was 6th in the 3200, Jeff Eduard was 5th in the shot.
