Southside Cross Country Invitational

Friday October 22nd, 2010

Southside School, Shelton, WA

The clouds parted on the afternoon of the 22nd and the sun was as bright as the young faces that inaugurated the 3K course at Southside School in Shelton.  There where some fine performances by the individual athetes and their teams, but everyone, runners and spectators alike, felt richer for being there to kick off a cross country tradition for Mason County school kids.

The boys from Arcadia won the team competitions for both elementary and middle schools, with Southside 4th grader Andy Fry taking the overall elementary individual trophy home. Mountain View athlete Josiah Salazar-Fox, the sole  particpant not hailing from Southside, gutted-out second place.

Oakland Bay 8th grader Sean Gorman outlasted 20 other middle-schoolers to claim the big boy’s championship.  Southside defeated Olympic Middle School by a three point margin for the team title.

Southsiders Connie Wood and Darlene Bell, the elementary girl participants, took home hardware for their fearless efforts.  Wood garnered the overall girls trophy, whilst Bell literally walked away with the 2nd place medal.

The girls middle school race was dominated on two fronts.  Ella Pinter from Southside School displayed her running chops; the 7th grader easily controlled the race for the overall individual title.  Following Pinter to the line where six straight gals from Olympic Middle School.  Those ladies took the team trophy back to K street.

We had 7 “finishers” cross the line without a bib number, or with a bib, but without a pull tag.  These were “poachers” and folks who had finished the race once already.  While we salute your spirit, please be advised that you make things difficult for small running event scorers who want to get the times and places right for everybody.  Furthermore, it really is a serious breach of decorum to poach a community 5K.

If you see mistakes above, please contact us at shuck-n-run@hotmail.com.  It is probably our error.
