A's Series:  March 15/19/21, 2011

Unfortunately, rain outs for the first two games of the Bay Bridge Series ...
boo weather!

And we were wondering if the Giants would even have a chance to play the Athletics at all in 2011 ... but with some luck (and possible divine intervention) we received good news that the storms would move around us (hail storm to the West, tornado's to the East) and were able to salvage at least one game out of the season opening series.

The approach to the first game of the campaign is always exciting (and nerve racking) because as coaches we always question ourselves ... did we do enough ... is the team ready ... what if we don't win a game.  And finally, on this day March 21st, we were able to witness the possibilities of your AAA Giants ---

Baseball is simple ... throw ... catch ... hit.  Honest, that is it!  And if you do this better than the other team, chances are - success!  And today was exactly that formula:

PITCHING:  We believe this team is filled with capable arms ... and with so many options it was a "flip a coin" choice to see who our opening day starter would be ... and the coin said - Mr. Tyler.  And why not ... kid walked ..... well, NOBODY!  Talk about being dialed in.  Add THREE strikeouts and an assist for an out to 1B, and Ty took care of business.  He threw 24 strikes in two innings of work like a seasoned professional.  He did allow an over the fence HR, but what happened next was even more amazing ... he shook it off and struck out the next two batters .... jeez, does anything bother this kid?  Happy Birthday!

RELIEF:  Ethan came in to finish what Tyler started ... and oh boy did he!  He struck out a pair in 2 innings without allowing a run ... shoot, he didn't even allow a RUNNER in the final 4th putting them down 1,2,3 ... and when he wasn't striking them out he trusted the guys behind him to make plays ...

DEFENSE:  Speaking of, defense is everything ... winning 1-0 is perfectly fine.  There is something to be said about defense and pride.  And today the team came out prepared with strong plays all over the place --- P Tyler to 1B Jimmy to get the 1st out of the season .... 1B Jimmy making the nice catch in foul territory and later taking the slow roller unassisted ... 1B RyanK making the "diving" play .... SS Soto squeezing the popup ... and 2B Colin took the appropriate steps back into RF making the two handed grab eliminating any A's chance of momentum.

OFFENSE:  Check this out .... EVERYONE got on base!  AND 10 out of the 12 players SCORED!!  Ok ok, I guess we get as excited about offense as defense.  18 runs in 4 innings is nothing to sneeze at ... so let's see who the beasts were tonight --- leadoff hitter Tucker, Josh, TylerColin and Cole scored EVERY at bat (11 runs) - sick!  G's were also disciplined and had a lot of free passes, but there were some awesome moments ... Keaton's drive to RF ... Rennie's solid base hit ... Crain driving in the 5th run of the inning ... Hug's blast to RF ... Colin's hit ... and Birthday Boy Will joined the party with a score.  No doubt the team took advantage of every opportunity, but there was one player that really stood out tonight ....

MVP:  This kid went 3-3 ... drove the ball to the outfield every hit ... added a 4 pitch walk to his resume ... scored two runs ... made two outs on defense ... AND had 6 RBI's .... say what?  This one was as easy as it gets - Mr. Ryan Kwong ... you deserved today's game ball, thatta kid!!!

 GIANTS: 18     A's:  3
