July 1st: Burkett 22 - Sterling 10

Burkett and Sterling showed up a 2:00pm to play their elimination game before the long week off, and they decided to duke it out like a Heavy weight prize fight.

Kosta Drosidis stepped into the batter's box leading off for Burkett and within 10 seconds he was trotting around the bases for the game's first run, a solo shot to center. Burkett would add 3 more runs in the inning to take a early 4-0 lead.

These two teams would go back and forth over the next three innings, and at one point Burkett would take a 15-4 lead going into the fourth. Jack Whalen continued his hot streak with the first Burkett Grand Slam of the day. Yes you read that correctly, the first of the day, because Drosidis would add another 4 RBI's on the night with a Grand Slam in the 4th.

Marrino Caracciolo would put this one away with a two run double to right in the top half of the 5th to give Burkett enough runs to shorten this game.

It's hard to select a single offensive player of the game when everybody that came to the plate today put the bat on the ball and moved runners around, but its even harder to overlook the Grandslams by both Whalen and Drosidis in this one. Drosidis would end up going 4 for 4 with 2 HR's, 4 runs, and 6 RBI's and Whalen ended the night at 2 for 4, 2 runs and 5 RBI's. Herlihy, Griffin and McNary each had two hits themselves in the game.

Defensively, Jimmy Griffin is making a name for himself as the premier centerfielder in this tournament. Sterling tested his arm once in the first inning, never to be tested again after being nailed out at the plate trying to stretch that extra base into a score. In the third, with two men on, the Sterling batter drove a Drosidis fastball toward the wall in left center, only to be knocked down and brought back in by Griffin, saving two runs. For those of you scoring at home, that's two homers he has robbed in two games.

Marrino Caracciolo would come in for relief of Drosidis in the bottom of the 4th and go on to pitch the 5th. With the lead at 13, two men on with 1 out, Marrino snagged the line drive back up the middle just off the ground and doubled up the runner at first to end the game.

As lopsided as the score might seem, this was a slugfest between two power hitting teams, and the good guys prevailed.

Next stop, Burkett plays the loser of Holden/West Boylston Tuesday July 10th, at a location to be determined.

June 30th: Burkett 14 - Schwartz 4
June 29th  Burkett 2- Holden 3

Nothing gets better than Friday night baseball at Burkett...
Holden came to Rockwood in a battle between two of the favored teams in the District.  Jack Herlihy took the mound for Burkett going the distance in a tough loss to a strong Holden team.
Kosta Drosidis opened up the game with a single to right that worked its way past the right fielder allowing him to get to third.  Jack Herlihy grounded to short, but not before the first run of the night was tacked on.
The score would remain 1-0 until Jimmy Conway sent the Jack Herlihy offering over the center field fence for a two run homer to tie the game up for Holden.
Drosidis singled again in the top of the third, then advanced to second on the Jack Herlihy double to the left center gap.  Jimmy Griffin would ground out to the third baseman, but Drosidis would sneak in to put Burkett up 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jimmy Conway sent the first offering from Herlihy to straight away center, only to be brought back into the ballpark by Jimmy Griffin, preserving the 2-1 lead.
The bats would stay silent until PJ Barry put Holden ahead for good with a 2 run shot to left in the bottom of the fifth with two out.
Burkett began to muster a rally with Jimmy Griffin reaching first after getting hit by a pitch, moving to second on a wild throw, then advancing to third on the Dylan McNary grounder.  Sam Kapacziewski would reach first on a walk with two out.  The hard throwing Eric Bjorn, clocked at 66 MPH up in the booth, would come in a retire the only batter he would face and preserve the Holden win.
Herlihy ended the game throwing 66 pitches with 9 K's, 0 BB's and 3 runs over 5 innings. Leading the way for Burkett at the plate was Kosta Drosidis going 3 for 3 with two runs scored.
Burkett goes on to face Schwartz in a elimination game Saturday, June 30th, 5:30 at Burkett. Let's flood the stand with red shirts and cheer this team onto the next round.

June 27th  Burkett 19- Ty Cobb 0
Burkett entered the second round game sending Jack Whalen to the mound against Ty Cobb. Whalen had command of his pitches over 4 innings striking out 10, walking none and allowing 2 hits for a total of only 48 pitches.  Sam Kapacziewski came in to pitch the 5th and close out the game by retiring the side.
At the plate, the Burkett boys exploded.  Jimmy Griffin led the way with two home runs and 7 RBI's on the night. Connor Donoghue had a beautiful triple down the right field line and Jack Whalen also helped his own cause by going 4-5 with 2 doubles, 2 singles and 4 RBI's.  In total, the boys only struck out only 4 times and ran through the lineup twice during the game.
Defensively, the only rally Ty Cobb had in the game was killed to end the second inning when their runner on first attempted to advance to third on a single to right, only to be met by Connor Donoghue and the tag at third, on the receiving end of a Marino Caracciolo missile.  Never under estimate the the little guys on this team!

2012 10/11 yr old boys All Star Team:

July 2nd:    Burkett 8 - Ted Williams 1
After getting knocked into the lower bracket over the weekend, Burkett took the field Monday night against Ted Williams, with Matt Benoit getting the nod for our boys.
After allowing the lead off hitter on base with a walk, Matt proceeded to strike out the next 9 of 14 hitters he would face allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks.  In the 2nd inning, with the only batter to get a hit taking an extra large lead off second, Matt picked him off then proceeded to strike out the next batter to end the inning.
Jarrod Rutkiewicz would come in for relief in the top half of the 4th and go on to strike out 3 and walk one to preserve the Burkett victory.
At the plate, Tim O'Connor continued on his torrid hitting streak in this tournament, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored to lead all hitters on the day.  Charlie Payson, Lucas Aguayo-Garber and Jori Hiraldo each had RBI's on the night with the remainder of the runs coming in on the aggressive base running of Burkett.
Charlie Payson continued his dominance behind the plate with his finest play coming to end the game, picking off the runner at third taking a lead.
Burkett advances to play Schwartz, Friday night July 6th, at 5:30 in Rutland.

June 30th:   Burkett 4 - Tom Ash 6

Burkett took the field against the highly touted Tom Ash team and gave it all they could today.
Tim O'Connor got the nod on the mound, leaving many of the hitters scratching their heads by constantly mixing up his changeup and fast ball. Over the 3 1/3 innings he pitched, Tim struck out 6, walked 5, gave up 4 hits and 4 runs to keep the boys in blue in the game.  Junkball master Dylan Page and the hard throwing Jarrod Rutkiewicz finished out the game for Burkett.
The Burkett bats we alive all game long, and struck fast in the early innings.  In the top of the first, with two outs, Lucas Aguayo-Garber (LG3) took advantage of a fielding error to get on first. Tim O'Connor took the opportunity to help himself out, by knocking LG3 home with a wall banging double to take the early 1-0 lead.
Burkett would tack on 3 more runs in the second, beginning with Rutkiewicz's lead-off walk and singles by Charlie Payson and Dylon Page .  Page would eventually steal home for the games 4th run to stretch the Burkett lead to 4-0.
Tom Ash chipped away at the lead putting up 3 runs in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th and one more insurance run in the 5th.   Burkett kept putting the ball in play, totalling 9 hits, drawing 2 walks and multiple other balls put in play to keep runners moving, but some timely plays by Tom Ash in the last innings held it at the final 6-4.
O'Connor, Page and Payson led the way for Burkett batters going 6 for 9 with 5 1B's, 1 2B, 2 runs and 1 RBI amongst them.
Burkett Faces off against Ted Williams in an elimination game, on Monday July 2nd, 5:30 in Rutland.

June 28th:  Burkett 12 - Connie Mack 2
Matt Benoit took the mound for the boys in their opener, and he did not disappoint the fans. Benoit went 3 innings, throwing 48 pitches striking out 8, giving up 1 hit,  1 BB and 0 runs.  Carlo Mannina and Jori Hiraldo closed out the fourth and kept the Connie Mack hitters at bay allowing a two run single in the fourth for the only runs Mack would get.
The Burkett bats were alive tonight, with Jori hiraldo leading off with a single up the middle and scoring the game's first run on a Tim O'Connor sacrifice.  Burkett would continune to put runs on the board with Anthony Sullivan and Matt Benoit leading the way in the second and Aguayo-Garber, Page and Payson adding to the total in the 3rd.
In the fourth inning, Burkett batted thru the order adding six more runs, ending the game early with a bases loaded, two run single by Tim O'Connor.
Charlie Payson led the hitters today with a two hit, 2 run, 3 RBI performance and a put-out at second in the first inning on the only runner that attempted to advance on him in the game.
