"Men not mice"
Strathmore Spartans bantam football team impresses coach with tie against Chestermere
Thursday September 05, 2002
The Spartans, with just 18 players dressed for the contest, earned great praise from head coach Rob Musselman.
"We played like men not mice - that's the only way I could refer to those boys," said Musselman. "We had only 18 players today and everyone one them played ironman - everyone of them played on both sides of the field.
"I can't respect these guys enough - they're all hard workers.
"After only four days of practice...that was amazing."
After trailing 6-0, the Spartans tied the contest before the Chiefs took another lead with a touchdown. The Spartans replied with one of their own to send the game to overtime, where they had a glorious chance to win it.
"They're a good competition - I like playing Chestermere," said Musselman. "We have a strong disliking for each other but they're good competitors.
"Both teams show up when we play each other - I like playing against them."
The Spartans, who used the option and the pitch quite effectively throughout the game, hope to polish up their entire game for their season opener next week at the high school.
The Spartans will host Drumheller at 1 p.m. to open the campaign.
"I think that it should be a good matchup," said Musselman of the contest. "They beat us last year by one point when we took some stupid penalties...we should have won that game.
"We're looking to come out and dominate against them. I hope that we're hungry against those guys.
"I'd rather have 20 hungry, intense players who show up to play every game than 40 basic players."
So coach, with this crew that has played one game, "Are the playoffs obtainable?"
"Obtainable?" questioned Musselman. "I think that the playoffs are more than obtainable.
"Without a doubt, I think that we can win the league. We're going to go out and give every team a run for their money."
