The visiting Battlefords Sharks were able to exact revenge this afternoon against the Swift Current Innovation Credit Union U18 Female AAA Wildcats.
After Swift Current won Saturday 6-0, Sharks forward Martine Morelli scored in the back half of the third period to lift Battlefords to a 3-2 victory. The win was heavily aided by Sharks netminder Emma Backman’s 36 save performance.
The Wildcats did get out to an early lead as Ella Wingert cut in from the half wall and wristed a puck past Backman’s glove hand around the midway point of the first.
Battlefords would tie the game up with around four minutes left in the second and then with 19 seconds left in the frame they’d jump out to a 2-1 lead.
Swift Current was able to erase that deficit in the third when defenceman Kylee Hansen scored from nearly the goal line.
With seven minutes to play in regulation a point shot by the Sharks was knocked down right in front of the Wildcats net and Morelli made no mistake beating Swift Current goalie Aurora Van Wormer.
The Wildcats fall to 7-3 on the campaign with the loss and are now in a three-way tie at the top of the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League standings with the Regina Rebels and the Notre Dame Hounds.
They’ll head to Saskatoon next weekend for two games against the 6-1 Stars.
