The Cubs opened the 2007 Fleet Park Major League season with a convincing 10-0 victory over the Wards Corner Tigers. The game was called after 5 innings due to the 10 run rule (which may have been streched slightly, our official scorer had it 9-0 but that is picking nits). Story of the game...Will Daniel threw a complete game 1 hitter, with only 3 walks, accounting for most of the 15 outs with 11 strike outs. The only other times that Will and Marcus didn't conspire for outs, were the hit, of course, 2 infield flys to Vince at first and a grounder each to Vince and Will. That's it, that's the list for when we were in the field. At the plate, we faced a very hard throwing right hander for the first 3 innings. The middle of our lineup was up to the task, though and in the 2nd inning, a walk to Marcus and singles by Will, Sam, Josh and Anthony resulted in a 3-0 lead that the Cubs never relinquished. Vince had a single in the 3rd and singles by Wyatt and Marcus brought him home and then we had the big explosion in the 5th inning in which the Cubs scored 5 runs to put the game away. Highlights: Cabell returned from the disabled list and despite still being a tad gimpy, got a hit and scored a run Vince smashed a big single in the 5th inning to key that inning's knock out punch Wyatt took a break from lacrosse and slugged two base hits Marcus was rock solid behind the plate, called a masterful game for his pitcher, walked twice and had a hit Will had the first Cub's hit of the season and kept the Tigers off balance the whole game with a good combination of fastballs and a breaking ball thrown in, here and there. Miles helped us out in Centerfield and at Shortstop plus had a hard shot to 2nd that was right at the Tiger's 2nd baseman. Sam had a single and also took one in the back for the team Josh went 1 for 2 with an RBI Anthony was 2 inches from going 2 for 2 today. He had a good hit in the 2nd and a smash in the 4th that the second baseman just got his glove on. Parker showed us why we always run through 1st base as he hustled down the first base line, even though it was a "sure" out. It turned out the 1st baseman dropped the ball, he was safe and eventually scored. Robey hit a hard shot to the pitcher. Didn't get by for a hit but he was all over the pitch George went 1 for 2 and scored a run Next game is this Wednesday against the Wards Corner Royals at 6. Come out early to get a good seat.
