Americans Win Opener 3-1

Posted by Kevin Burgoyne at May 28, 2007 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Billerica native and Roger Williams University's RHP, Greg Sousa, pitched a complete game six hitter for the Medford Americans Tuesday leading them to an opening day 3-1 victory over the visiting Watertown Reds. Both Franklin Pierce College's Mike Burgoyne and Babson's Steve Tahmoush had a pair of hits and a run scored for the Americans. Tahmoush's third inning, two out double drove in the first American run. St. Anselm's Johnny Welch (double) and Mark Annese of the Suffolk University Rams had the other American hits and each made a sparkling defensive play to help secure the win. The Americans got on the board in the third when Burgoyne lashed a two out single to left off Watertown starter, Lee Jamieson. Tahmoush then launched a double to straight away center scoring Burgoyne, who was running on the pitch, from first. Watertown tied the game in the top of the sixth. With one out Matt McEvoy was hit by a pitch and promptly stole second. One out later, Brian Shapiro singled sharply to right center to score McEvoy. In the bottom half of the sixth the Americans took advantage of three uncharacteristic Watertown miscues to score score two runs. With Jon Jackson on to pitch for the Reds, Tahmoush led off with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Bentley's Charlie Pagliarulo pushed Tahmoush to second. Following a Steve Napier strikeout, Annese hit a ground ball off Jackson's leg. The ball deflected to the second baseman who threw wildly to first allowing Annese to reach and Tahmoush to score what proved to be the winning run. Suffolk's Bill Smeglin followed with a ground ball to third that was also thrown away leaving Annese at third and Smeglin at first. Catcher Ryan McCarthy of Roger Williams University then struck out but the ball got away from the catcher. His subsequent throw to first was also off the mark allowing Annese to score the game's final run. In the top of the seventh the Reds got runners on second and third with two down but Sousa induced a fly ball to center field for the final out. The Americans get right back to the action Wednesday night when they host the Mooney Dental Tanners at Playstead Park. Game time is 6:00.
