1200 Meter Time Trial Results

Posted by Mike Davis at Feb 13, 2007 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The first "race" of the season was held on Weds the 14th - a distance squad time trial at 1200 meters.  While this distance is not typically raced - falling between the 1600 and 800 -, it is a great gauge of pre-season training and early season racing skills.

Congrats to Dustin Harris (Jr) and Nicole Aha (Fr) for their respective first place performances.  Dustin went out hard and lead wire-to-wire, hanging on over hard finishing Danny Bartz and Keith Romoser.  Nicole ran stride for stride with Renee Lau and Kaitlin Kelly before turning on a strong kick in the last 100 meters to take it.  Great action for only week two!

Golden West Invitational - RESULTS

Posted by Mike Davis at Jun 10, 2006 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The GWI is a well established high school meet, run after most of the State meets, which allows the top high school athletes from across the country the opportunity to compete against one another.  Only the Nike Nationals held in North Carolina are larger that GWI.  To enter, athletes need to meet tough A or B standards, which can be found on the meet web site:

Three of your Mustang's ventured out to Folsom High School's brand new facility, to try their luck against the very best.  Daniela Gergley ran the 3200 (she qualified in the mile and 3200).  Chris Krychev threw the shot (he had a qualifying mark in the discuss too), and Chris Simpson ran the mile (he also qualified in the 800).

Chris Simpson ran a thrilling, come-from-behind race, to win the B heat of the mile in a personal best 4:20.66 for the full mile (4:19.16 for 1600).  He outkicked Valley Christian's Robby Knorr, who had taken the lead at the start of the last lap.  Chris ends his MV career on the victory stand, a position he truly deserves.  Chris will be moving on to Santa Barbara City College next fall, where he'll run XC and Track.

Daniela finished 11th in the 3200, in a race that featured the top 3200 runners in the country.  She'll take her talents to USC, where she will make an immediate impact on the Southern Cal distance program.

But the real story for the Mustangs, was Junior Chris Krychev's HUGE day of throws in the shot put.  Chris won the the "B" flight of the shot at 12 noon, in a PR throw of 57' 9".   After hanging around all day, he was invited to join the big boys in the "A" flight in the evening meet.  And these truly were the big dogs!  Chris had a fantastic series for throws, besting Coach Spitz' school record on this 2nd or 3rd toss.  He then proceeded to distance himself from the old record (58 feet, 1 1/4 inches) by throwing 58' 11".  He had one lower throw, then on his last attempt - heaved the monster throw that he and Coach Spitz knew he had in him - 59' 4"!!!  He ended up 6th overall in the A division!  What a way to close out the year, and position himself for next season.

And now... that's a wrap!

Another title for Klech
The senior clocks the third-fastest California high school time ever in the 300-meter hurdles

SRVT state track meet

In his final race as a high school track and field athlete, California High School's David Klech experienced something he rarely faces in hurdle events.

Rounding the curve Saturday in the California Interscholastic Federation state track and field boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles final, Klech had company. Next to him was Jeshua Anderson of Taft-Woodland Hills.

"I watched him run yesterday and I knew it would be a good race in the finals," Klech said.

But Klech, who was battling a right hamstring strain, started pulling away and was in total control by the fifth hurdle. He won the race in 35.87 seconds, which was announced as the third-fastest California high school time ever.

"That was my greatest (race) by far. That race was 100 percent heart," Klech said. "I held 13 steps all the way around the track. It was a flawless race."

Anderson finished second in 36.75, followed by Terry Prentice of Diamond Ranch-Pomona (36.79).

"I didn't pull away until the last 100 (meters) of the race," Klech said. "It was nice to have some competition to push me."

In Klech's first event of the day, the long jump, his opening mark was 22-3. His second attempt was 22-11/4, and after passing his third attempt, his fourth attempt was his best of the competition (22-51/2, good for eighth place). Prentice won the competition with a wind-legal leap of 23-101/2.

During the long jump competition, California scratched Klech from the 110 hurdles and appealed for reinstatement into the meet in the 300 hurdles.

"I knew the odds were great," Klech said.

The appeal was granted, keeping alive Klech's goal.

"My goal this weekend was to get my second state title in the 3's," he said. "This state title is so special to me."

The 110 hurdles was won by Prentice in a wind-legal 14.11. That time is well off of Klech's state-leading mark of 13.69 seconds.

"It was definitely hard to watch that race," Klech said. "But I knew the (300) is what I wanted. Going out there and running 35.8 in the 3s is worth it."

In the girls 3,200 final, Monte Vista's Daniela Gergley finished 18th in 11:24.41.

"It wasn't my best, but I'll take it," Gergley said. "The pace went out really fast. I was in the back for a while. Getting used to that and picking it up was tough."

Gergley passed through the first lap in 77 seconds, a pace that was faster than Gergley was used to. She passed the mile mark in 5:28.

Freshman sensation Jordan Hasay of Mission College Prep-San Luis Obispo won the race in 10:13.55.

Long Beach Poly won the boys team title with 42 points, easily outdistancing Diamond Ranch and Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks (26). Long Beach Wilson and James Logan tied for the girls team title with 37 points apiece.
