News and Announcements
In addition to the event coaches, the Mustangs are lucky to have the following people lending their time and talents to the team :
Team Manager: Pending
Team Parents: Pending
Mike Aha - Athletic Boosters President:
Doug Nesbit: Booster Liaison
Doug has volunteered to be the team liaison to the Boosters, and will represent us at their monthly meetings. Track has been a direct beneficiary of Athletic Booster funding (pole vault and high jump pits, hurdles, starting blocks...not to mention the track itself), so this is critical position for the team.
Mike Huntsman - Photo Finish Timing System Operator.
Coach Huntsman's love of running and love of gadgets will collide as he operates our new, state-of-the-art photo finishing/timing system at all our home meets - to prepare for the EBAL Championships! A long time coach here at Monte Vista and elsewhere in the East Bay, Coach Huntsman continues to support our team each season!
Darrell Wiley - Meet Announcer
Darrell is the father of former MVHS Hurdler Nate Wiley who graduated in 2006. However, Darrell has stayed involved with the T&F program, and lends his "golden voice" to the East Bay Invite as well as our home EBAL Meets. Thank you for the dedication Darrell!
Dave Rosenberg - Team Statistician
Dave can be found around the sand pits at most MV home meets, having earned an advanced degree in Smooth Sand from Coach Austin. However, it is his endless work putting together MV's first "Top 5" performance lists that most athletes and parents can appreciate the most. Dave poured through page after page of mind-numbing stats to get this project off the ground. Great Job Dave!
Please show your support for your team, and help these great parents in their volunteer duties. They can't do it all themselves!
Once again this year, Coach Davis will select an individual from the distance squad, whose performance on the track warrants special recognition by the entire distance team. This performance may be one of the fastest of the week, or simply represent a huge break-through race for that runner. This is an informal award, with Coach Davis being the sole judge and jury!
Congrats to the following teammates who have been called out:
Week 1 - Foothill dual meet
The first week's award was given not to one person, but the varsity girls distance squad, specifically, the four runners who helped lead the Mustangs to victory in our first dual meet. Nicole Aha, Kaitlin Kelly (first and second in the 1600), Renee Lau and Claire Hoppens (first and second in the 3200). Together, they outscored Foothill 16 - 2 in those two events. A great way to start the dual meet season. Interesting, there is someone from every class represented here! Congrats Girls!
Week 2 - Cal HS dual meet
Danny Bartz is the recipient of our award this week. After his sophomore track season as well as his junior year cross country campaign were cut short due to a nagging hip injury, Danny took the time and focus required to properly treat and rehab it in the winter off season. He has been running pain free all track season, and the results show just how 'back' Danny is! With a previous PR of 4:58 in the 1600 when the year started, Danny blasted past that mark by over 13 seconds in running a 4:45.7 PR against Cal. His PR in the 800 will be tested shortly. Nice job Danny!
Week 3 - Amador Valley dual meet
This weeks winner dropped nearly 20 seconds off her 1600 time from two weeks earlier, winning the FS Girls 1600 and smashing through the 6:00 minute barrier in running a 5:56 1600 race. Katherine Boomer becomes the fifth girl on the current team to break this barrier, doing so from a previous season best of 6:18! Katherine took our team talk about positive mental attitude to heart, refusing to let negative thoughts slip into her head while she stalked the Amador leader for nearly 3 laps. Sensing it was "time to fly", she powered past for the win and the huge PR. Way to go Katherine!
Week 4 - Granada High School dual meet
Cameron Tremblay-Adams is the deserving winner of this week's award, having broken through the 5 minute barrier that he had set his sights on all season. After enduring several injuries in Cross Country and Track last year, Cameron has been able to train hard again this season and the results show! After hovering in the 5:08 to 5:03 range, Cameron would not ease up in the Varsity 1600 against Granada, powering across the line in a 4:59.6 effort. He becomes the 8th runner on the team this year to hit that mark. He now sets his sights on that 4:50 barrier - something we know he'll get! Great job Cameron.
Week 5 - Livermore HS dual meet
This weeks DRW (Distance Runner of the Week) had a nearly 15 second break through this past week. Jeff Topor, a sophomore, has been struggling to match his sub 6 pace from last season. At first hampered by an illness, Jeff ran a string of 1600 meter races in the 6:05 to 6:02 range, seeming stuck at that number. In advance of the Livermore meet, Jeff agreed to 'make something happen' and get out faster. And indeed he did. Jeff came across the line in 5:51, breaking out of cycle he was stuck in. Jeff is now looking at a new PR by season end. Congrats Jeff!
Week 6 - San Ramon Valley HS Dual Meet
There were a number of solid PR's set by distance runners at this important meet. But none meant as much as Keith Romoser's huge PR 1600 run! Keith has chased the sub 5 mark for the past two seasons, having run 5 flat on two different occasions. Keith probably had more sub 5:10's without a sub 5:00 than anyone in MV history. So today he was a man on a mission. Blasting through the first 800 in 2:26, Keith did not let up on laps 3 & 4, hammering home in a "no doubt" performace of 4:52!!! He followed that up with a 2:11 800 and then completed the distance triple by running the 3200 at the end of the meet. Congrats Keith - you deserved this day.
Week 7 - EBAL Trials & Championships
With SO MANY PR's to choose from at the EBAL meet, it is really hard to pick one performance to honor this week. Several Mustangs took 10 seconds or more off of their 1600 times during this meet, which is amazing. However, this weeks winner not only smashed their already fast PR, they did so in the varsity division! Soph Kaitlin Kelly was slated to run in the F/S heat, having battled with the varsity runners all year. But an AP test made that impossible, so Kaitlin willingly toed the line with the EBAL varsity girls. Having run her PR way back at the Foothill meet, she was hungry to show improvement. And you better believe she did! Running a full 10 seconds faster, Kaitlin ran a 5:35 PR and qualified for the varsity finals. Two days later, she dropped another 2 seconds off her time running a 5:33 to finish 9th overall in league. Nice finish Kaitlin - truly a case of REALLY WANTING IT!!
Week 8 - NCS Tri Valley Championships
This weeks honoree has been lowering his 800 PR all season long. Junior Dustin Harris transferred to Monte Vista just prior to the track season, but immediately made an impact on the varsity 800 and 1600 scene, as well as running lead off on the 4X400 relay most of the year. With an already fast PR of 2:04 to his credit, Dustin ran 2:02, and then 2:00.3 before running a sub 2 time at the EBAL trials - making the finals with a 1:59.1 effort. Having qualified for the NCS Tri Valley meet, Dustin went all out in his heat, which proved to be a packed, rough and rowdy race. Fighting for position, Dustin powered home in another PR of 1:58.02, nearly breaking into the '57s. His performance earned him the 7th spot and an invite to the NCS Meet of Champions on May 25th. A great job this season - we're sure glad you landed at Monte Vista!
Week 9 - NCS Meet of Champions
(Updated Jan 21, 2008). As the season draws to a close for the distance team, there is one person who has been purposely left off the DRW awards list, as Coach Davis intentionally waited for what he knew would be an amazing post season run by this individual. Having finished 4th overall for the team in points scored, Bhavik Kanzaria blasted his way to PR's all season long. In the EBAL Finals, Bhavik chased the areas best runners in the 1600 on his way to an impressive 3rd place finish and outstanding time of 4:25. That puts him less than 9 seconds from the Monte Vista school record - a mark he will chase with fevor in 2008! Electing to pursue a path to the State Meet in the 3200, despite having less of a training base than some of his competitors, Bhavik ran a thrilling race in the finals of the 3200 at the NCS MOC meet. Hanging on to a torrid pace for the first 1600, Bhavik made a strong move late in the race and moved to challenge the leaders - grabbing the 4th and final State meet spot in the 6th lap. He hung onto it into the 7th lap, but the surge took it's toll as he finally settled for 9th overall - in a PR time of 9:41! He might have run even faster without the surge - but as always - Bhavik was racing to win, and due to this, is our Distance Runner of the Week!
