On April 18, 2006, the Northside Mustangs Freshman squad traveled to Niles North High School to take on sectional rivals Deerfield, Fenwick, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, Loyola, and host Niles North in the Viking Invitational. Albert Lin lead the Mustangs in scoring with 15 points by winning the Triple Jump with a personal best 36'6.5. Lin also placed 4th in the Long Jump with a 16'5.5, and placed 6th in the 300m Hurdles with a personal best time of 50.60. In the 4x800m Relay, the Mustangs placed fourth with an outstanding time of 11:12. Simon Vecchioni ran the first leg of the relay in 2:39. Shahhed Ghogha ran the second leg of the relay in 2:43. Nathan Michaelson ran the third leg of the relay in 2:53. Eli Tullis anchored the relay in 2:57. In the 4x100m relay, the Mustangs placed fifth overall with a time of 61.01. Dilraj Sekhon ran a 13.63 on the first leg of the relay. Spencer Rosenfeldt ran a 15.20 on the second leg of the relay. Nathan Michaelson ran a 16.09 on the third leg of the relay, and Eli Tullis anchored the relay with a 100m split of 16.09. In the 3200m run, Jonathan Kittaka placed third overall with a 11:17.6. Tyler Johnson earned a ribbon by place sixth overall with a time of 13:00. In the 4x200m Relay, Brian Chhun ran a 24.87 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Sammy Caronagan ran a 29.12 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Tyler Johnson ran a 31.81 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Sam Vergara ran a 27.83 split on the anchor leg of the relay. However, the relay was "DQ" because of an exchange zone violation on the third leg of the relay. In the 400m run, Brian Chun ran a 61.30, and Sam Vergara ran a 65.90. In the 1600m run, Jonathan Kittaka finished 7th overall with a 5:19. Shaheed Ghogha ran an outstanding time of 5:50. In the 4x400m Relay, Brian Chhun ran a 61.06 400m split on the first leg of the relay, Simon Vechhioni ran a 67.53 on the second leg of the relay, Tyler Johnson ran a personal best 64.00 400m split on the third leg of the relay, and Sam Vergara anchored the relay with an outstanding time of 63.94. Although several members of the Mustangs Freshman Team were running Varsity and not in the Freshman division, the Mustangs still finished within 20 points of Track and Field powerhouse Loyola. On April 18, 2006, the Mustangs traveled to Niles North High School for the Viking Invitational. The meet offered three divisions, Varisity, Junior Varisty, and Freshman. Track and Field Meets in Illinois, only offer athletes 2 divisions (Varsity and Sophomore-Freshman). Head Niles North Coach Paul Swanson came up with the idea to have a meet with Three divisions to get more athletes involved in participating in multiple events and to better develop the depth of Track and Field Teams. The meet was huge success, and all three divisions were highly competitive. In the Junior Varsity 4x800m Relay, Senior Bobby Ziegler ran a personal best 800m split of 2:25, representing a 4 second time drop, on the first leg of the 4x800m relay. On the second leg of the relay, Adam Swiatlowski ran an 800m split of 2:33. On the Third leg of the 4x800m relay, Sophomore Eric Ullrich ran a 2:31 800m split. On the anchor leg of the relay, Irfan Hussain ran a 2:55 800m split, for a total time of 10:34. In the Junior Varsity 4x100m Relay, Sophomore James Casper-Shipp ran a personal best 12.98 100m split. Faraz Khan ran a 19.61 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Walid Mohammad ran a personal best 14.00 100m split on the third leg of the relay, and Melvin Thomas anchored the relay with a 14.94 100m split on the fourth leg of the relay. In the Junior Varsity 800m run, Eric Ullrich ran a 2:31. Ullrich ran up the steps of the pyramids in Mexico during Spring break last week as part of his Outdoor Track season training. In the Junior Varsity 4x200m relay, Irfan Hussain ran the first leg of the 4x200m relay, Faraz Khan ran the second leg of the 4x200m relay, Melvin Thomas ran a 30.34 200m split on the third leg of the relay. However, Walid Mohammad did not make back to the Track in time for the fourth leg of the relay. But all three athletes that ran in the relay gained valuable experience. In the Junior Varsity 400m run, Irfan Hussain ran a time of 69.00 In the Junior Varsity Mile, Bobby Ziegler ran a 5:18, and Adam Swiatlowski ran a 5:40 Mile. In the Junior Varsity 4x400m Relay, Melvin Thomas ran a 67.20 on the first leg, Eric Ullrich ran a 67.38 on the second leg, Adam Swiatlowski ran 69.09 on the third leg, and Bobby Ziegler anchored the relay with a 68.79 400m split. On Tuesday, April 18, 2006, the Northside Mens Varsity Track and Field Team traveled to Niles North High School in Skokie, Illinois to take on Sectional rivals Deerfield, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, Loyola, Fenwick, and Niles North. The meet was the most competitive meet the Mustangs attended this season, and as a result several Northside athletes ran, jumped, and/or threw personal bests distances and/or times in multiple events. Points were scored by placing in the top 6 individuals and/or top 5 relays. In the 4x800m relay, Freshman Brandon Cooper ran a personal best 2:12 on the first leg of the 4x800m relay. Sophomore Preston Buehrer ran a 2:28 on the second leg of the relay. Junior Joey Paquette ran a 2:32 on the third leg of the relay. Sophomore Erik Flores anchored the relay with a personal best time of 2:25, for a total time of 9:27 to place 4th overall and upset Glenbrook South, Niles North, and Loyola. In the 4x100m relay, Freshman Benjamin Garcia ran an outstanding 100m split of 12.58 on the first leg of the relay. Freshman Wemi Jemine ran a 12.91 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Santino Merino ran a 13.31 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Sophomore Preston Buehrer ran a personal best 12.46 on anchor leg of the relay, for a total time of 51.26. In the 3200m run, O'Connor and Kittaka were at 5:04 and 5:07 respectively through the Mile. Both athletes ran outstanding races. Patrick O'Connor placed 4th overall with a personal best time of 10:25. Senior Daniel Kittaka ran an outstanding time of 10:41. In the 800m run, Sophomore Preston Buehrer dropped 7 seconds off his personal best time with an outstanding time of 2:17. Junior Joey Paquette also ran an outstanding race with a time of 2:30. In the 400m run, Erik Flores ran a personal best time of 59.80. Brandon Cooper ran a outstanding time of 61.50. In the 1600m run, Patrick O'Connor ran an outstanding time of 4:53 to place 6th overall. Daniel Kittaka ran a 5:04, and showed great determination outkicking a runner from Deerfield and Niles North to the finish line. In the 4x400m Relay, Northside ran their fastest time this season with a 3:57.32 to place 7th overall. Freshman Benjamin Garcia lead off the relay with a personal best 400m split of 56.58. Erik Flores ran a 62.00 on the second leg of the 4x400m relay. Freshman Brandon Cooper ran a 59.42 on the third leg of the 4x400m relay. Preston Buehrer anchored the 4x400m relay with a personal best 60.30 400m split. The Mustangs will travel to Eckersal Stadium on Saturday, April 22, 2006 to take on 20 schools in the Kenwood Classic. The bus will leave from Northside at 7:00 am, and the Mustangs will feature several of their fastest relay entries of the season. Team Trophys will be awarded to the Top 3 Teams in the meet. The Mustangs will contend with DelaSalle High School for the Team Title. Meet Roster entries will be made public for the Kenwood Classic on the morning of Friday, April 21, 2006. Mustangs win Powerade Pineapple Challenge

On Thursday, April 13, 2006, Head Track Coach Jon Gordon challenged the Distance runners to run 1200m repeats in 4 minutes and under, and challenged the Sprinters to run 300m repeats in 47 seconds and under, and also challenged the High Jumpers to "PR" with unlimited attempts for Oranges, Powerade, and a Pineapple. Distance runners Patrick O'Connor, Preston Buehrer, Joey Paquette, and Bobby Ziegler won the Pineapple Challenge by running repeats under 4 minutes for 1200 meters. Sprinters Eric Flores, Wemi Jemine, Albert Lin, and Brian Chhun also earned a Pineapple by running three 300m repeats in 47 seconds and under. Oranges and Powerade were awarded for sub 4:25 1200m repeats to Adam Swiatlowski. Irfan Hussain, Shaheed Ghogha, James Casper-Shipp all came close to winning the challenge. Athletes that did not complete the workout were not awarded challenge prizes. Oranges and Powerade were also awarded to Sammy Caronagan for sub 48 seconds 300m repeats.
