On Sunday, March 11, 2007, the Northside Mens Track & Field Team traveled to Proviso West High School for the 2007 CPS Varsity Indoor All Star Meet. The meet featured over 60 schools, and lasted six hours. Medals were awarded to the top 3 places, and ribbons for places 4th through 6th. In the 3200m run, Northside Jonathan Kittaka and Lincoln Park Derek Schnake ran toe to toe for sixteen laps. Schnake edged Kittaka at the finish with a outanding time of 10:44.5. Kittaka placed second overall and dropped 6 seconds off his PR, for a personal best time of 10:44.8 (5:14/5:30). Lake View's Alex Agafonov placed 3rd overall. Agafonov was also impressive in the 4x800m Relay, and 4x400m Relay (62.00 split) with short rest. Northside Cuitlahuac Pineda placed fourth overall and dropped 12 seconds off his PR, for a personal best time of 11:31 (5:45/5:46). Jonathan Kittaka was awarded a Silver Medal, and Cuitlahuac Pineda was awared a ribbon. Although the 3200m run is not scored at CPS Indoor meets, because not every team is allowed an entry, the invited field was outstanding. In the High Jump, Sophomore Wemi Jemine did not show up to the meet, and the Mustangs were unable to substitute, costing the Mustangs vital points. In the Long Jump, Senior Geoff Edwards jumped 16'7. In the Triple Jump, Albert Lin did not show up to the meet, and the Mustangs were unable to substitute, costing the Mustangs vital points. In the Shot Put, Eric Nelson was ranked among the top five in the City. But arrived late to the meet, due to a typos on the Meet Schedule, and will attempt to break Chris Zysko's school record in the Shot Put on March 20, 2007 at the Ostberg Sophomore-Freshman Championships. In the 55m Dash, Benjamin Garcia ran a 7.10. In the 55m Hurdles, Albert Lin did not show up to the meet, and the Mustangs were unable to substitute, costing the Mustangs vital points. In the 4x800m Relay, Preston Buehrer dropped six seconds for a Personal Best 2:14 800m split on the first leg of the relay (65/69). Sophomore Simon Vecchioni ran a 2:24 800m split on the second leg of the relay. (68/76). Senior John Holler ran a personal best 2:17 800m split (66/71) on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Patrick O'Connor. O'Connor dropped 6 seconds from the Fenton Bison Indoor Classic for an outstanding 2:17 800m split (66/71) to anchor the Mustangs to THIRD PLACE overall, with a total time of 9:12. The Mustangs were awarded bronze medals. In the 800m run, on short rest, Preston Buehrer ran an outstanding time of 2:19 (65/74) to place seventh overall. Junior Jose Choto did not show up to the meet, due to alleged "cramps" when he woke up on Sunday morning. Northside Ironman Preston Buehrer came through for the Mustangs after running the 4x800m Relay, and 800m run, he anchored the 4x200m Relay within a second of the school record right after running the 800m run. In the 4x200m run, Benjamin Garcia ran a 27.58 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Garcia stuter-stepped at the start, costing him time, but it can be easily corrected. After the start, Garcia ran strong, and made an impressive exchange to Junior Santino Merino. Merino ran a personal best 24.85 200m split and moved the Mustangs to fourth place in their heat. Senior Geoff Edwards passed two athletes on the curb to move the Mustangs to second place in their heat with an impressive 25.77 200m split, and made a nice exchange to Preston Buehrer. Captain Preston Buehrer held off an attempt to pass him in the first 100m, and then opened up a big lead with a 26.38 200m split, for a total time of 1:44.64. The Mustangs came within one second of breaking the school record, which was set on Friday (1:43.12) and almost broke it in back-to-back meets. In the 400m Dash, Hunter Speese was unable to compete for Northside on Sunday due to a previously scheduled doctor's appointment for an injury from Basketball season. Speese notified Northside Head Coach on Friday, March 9, 2007, but the Mustangs were not allowed to make any substitutions after midnight on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 for the CPS Varsity Indoor All Star Meet. Therefore, the Mustangs had to sacerfice vital points. The 2007 400m Champion won it with an outstanding time of 56 seconds. Senior Geoff Edwards would later run a 55.53 400m split on the first leg of the 4x400m Relay. Edwards will definitely be running the 400m Dash for the Mustangs on March 24, 2007 at the Kenwood Classic. In the 1600m run, a year ago (2006), Northside Patrick O'Connor placed 2nd overall in the CPS Varsity Indoor meet, and had a 15 seconds time drop off his season best time. Could he do it again? Northside assistant Coach John Gallen told O'Connor prior to the race that he would run a 5:08. O'Connor contested saying he wants to break 5 minutes. Gallen told him that if he breaks five, he would get him a sandwich. Gallen will be providing Patrick O'Connor with a lot of sandwiches this season. Patrick O'Connor ran the first 200m in 33 seconds, and was in fifth place, but ahead of Lincoln Park. O'Connor went through 400m in 69 seconds, and was in fourth place. Patrick O'Connor went through 600m in 1:48, and had the top three runners within sight. O'Connor went through 800m in 2:27, and on pace to break five minutes. O'Connor went through 1000m in 3:08, and was closing quickly on the top three runners. Patrick O'Connor went through 1200m in 3:47! and moved to second place! O'Connor went through 1400m in 4:25, and had an awesome kick (34.84) to finish second overall with a 4:59.84! Patrick O'Connor dropped 28 seconds from the Fenton Bison Indoor Classic for a season best time of 4:59.84 and placed second overall in the CPS Varsity Indoor meet for the second consecutive year! Patrick O'Connor was awarded a silver medal, and enjoyed a sandwich too. The Mustangs now feature two sub five minute milers (Patrick O'Connor and Preston Buehrer), and are awaiting word from Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Invitational (3/31/07) for a possible invite in the Distance Medley Relay. In the 200m Dash, Benjamin Garcia had a great start, and outstanding race, and dropped 2 seconds off his 4x200m split with an outstanding time of 25.21. The school record in the 200m Dash in 25.09, and was set in 2003 by Jonathan Miller. The Mustangs now have four athletes that are all within striking distance of breaking the record. In the 4x400m Relay, Captain Geoff Edwards ran a personal best 400m split of 55.53!, which would have won the 400m Dash!, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Simon Vecchioni. Vecchioni ran a personal best time of 59.12!, and made a nice exchange to Junior Preston Buehrer. Captain Preston Buehrer, in his fourth running event of the day, ran an outstanding 61.91 400m split, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Benjamin Garcia. Benjamin Garcia, also in his fourth running event of the day, ran a 61.25 400m split, for a total time of 3:57.81. It was the second FASTEST 4x400m relay in the history of Northside College Prep. On Saturday, March 10, 2007, the Northside Women Track & Field Team traveled to Henry Crown Field House for the CPS Varsity Indoor Invitational. The meet featured over 60 schools and 400 athletes! Team Trophies were awarded to the Top 3 Teams, and Individual Medals for places 1st through 3rd, and ribbons for places 4th through 6th. The meet lasted approximately five hours and came down to the final event with Northside College Prep and Dunbar High School tied for third place with 44 points. The Mustangs 4x400m Relay came through and placed 2nd in the 4x400m Relay to take sole possession of Third place out of 60 schools! It was the highest Varsity Team finish in the history of Northside College Prep at the CPS Varsity Indoor Invitational. Several school records were also broken by the Northside College Prep Women, and the IHSA automatic state qualifying standards were approached as well. In the Triple Jump, Sophomore Maria Torres BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a jump of 34'4 to place 2nd overall. Torres is now within 1'2 of the IHSA Automatic State Qualifying standard. Maria Torres has QUALIFIED for the Illinois Prep Top Times Invitational by jumping the automatic qualifying standard of 34'4. The Illinois Prep Top Times Invitational features the top athletes in the State in every event. The Illinois Prep Top Times Invitational takes place at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, March 31, 2007 in Bloomington, Illinois. In the Shot Put, Kaitlin Renkosiak upset Whitney Young to place seventh overall. In the Long Jump, Julie Bujnowski placed 9th overall with a jump of 12'10. In the High Jump, Kelly Varney placed 6th overall with a jump of 4'2. In the 3200m run, Junior Rachel Kittaka WON with an outstanding time of 12:29. Kittaka came within 8 seconds of the school record in her first meet of the season, and ran the fastest time indoors ever by a Northside female athlete for two miles. Kittaka was at 2:50 for 800m, 5:56 for the Mile, 9:13 for 1.5 Miles, and 12:29 for two miles. Kittaka was awarded a Gold Medal, and a 2007 CPS Champion bag. In the 4x800m Relay, the Northside Varsity Women made history by breaking the SCHOOL RECORD by 18 secords. Sophomore Anna Parks lead off the first leg of the relay with an outstanding time of 2:33. Senior Julie Bujnowski ran a 2:49 800m split fot the second leg of the 4x800m Relay. Sophomore Carmen Abelson ran a 2:51 800m split for the third leg of the 4x800m Relay. Senior Mary Shelus, anchored the 4x800m Relay to FIRST PLACE and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD with a 2:32 800m split, and a total time of 10:45.70. All members of the Relay were awarded Gold Medals and 2007 CPS CHAMPION bags. In the 55m Hurdles, Kelly Varney placed sixth overall. In the 800m run, Sophomore Anna Parks came from behind to win the 2007 CPS Varsity Indoor Invitational title, with an outstanding time of 2:38. In the 4x200m Relay, Natalie Hanigan ran a 31.07 200m split on the first leg of the Relay. Hanigan made a nice exchange to Maria Torres. However, an athlete from another team ran into Maria Torres after the exchange. Torres recovered, and ran a 30.88 200m split on the second leg of the 4x200m Relay. Adaora Achfusi ran a 31.55 200m split on the third leg of the 4x200m Relay. Kelly Varney anchored the 4x200m relay with a 29.64 200m split, for a total time of 2:03.14. In the Mile, Sophomore Carmen Abelson had one of most impressive races of her career. Abelson was seeded fourth in the mile, and was in fifth place with three laps to go. Carmen Abelsson kept the lead pack within sight the whole race, and came from behind and took the lead with less than 150 meters to go, to WIN the 2007 CPS Indoor Mile! Abelson ran an outstanding time of 6:23 (3:10/3:13). Abelson was awarded a Gold Medal and a 2007 CPS CHAMPION bag. In the 200m Dash, Jennifer Kane placed 11th with a time of 30.23. In the 4x400m Dash, the Mustangs needed to beat Dunbar High School to break a tie for third place. The Mustangs not only beat Dunbar, but placed SECOND overall with an outstanding time of 4:42.74. Julie Bujnowski ran a 68.32 400m split on the first leg of the 4x400m Relay. Kelly Varney ran a 71.17 400m split on the second leg of the 4x400m Relay. Natalie Hanigan ran a 73.38 400m split on the third leg of the 4x400m Relay. Anna Parks anchored the 4x400m Relay to SECOND overall, with an outstanding 69.87 400m split, for a total time of 4:42.74. Northside College Prep will be adding POLE VAULT to the Track & Field Program. This will help the Mustangs score more points at IHSA State Sectionals and IHSA State Championships this year. Athletes interested in competing this season in Pole Vault will be required to practice Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 - 9:30 PM at Whitney Young with Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon and Northside Assoicate Coach David Diaz. On Friday, March 9, 2007, the Northside College Mens Track & Field Team traveled to historic Henry Crown Field House at the University of Chicago for the UC Lab School Varsity Indoor Classic! The meet featured University High, Wheaton Academy, Northshore Country Day, Northside College Prep, and Westmont High School. It was by far the best indoor meet in the history of Northside College Prep. In the 3200m run, Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka dropped 42 seconds for a personal best time of 10:50 to place third overall (5:17/5:33). Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda dropped 20 seconds for a personal best time of 11:43 to place sixth overall (5:43/6:00). Freshman Cooper Eben dropped 58 seconds for a personal best time of 12:22 to place tenth overall (5:58/6:24). Junior Faraz Khan placed 11th overall with a personal best time 12:55 (6:03/6:52). Junior Brad Eben placed 12th overall with an outstanding time of 13:17 (6:15/7:02). Junior Irfan Hussain placed 14th overall with a time of 14:02 (6:47/7:15). In the 55m Hudrles, Junior Santino Merino ran an outstanding time of 10.44 to place fifth overall. Freshman Andrew Czyszczon ran an outstanding time of 11.30 to place sixth overall. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran the second leg of the relay in an outstanding time of 2:33. Junior Harold Jaffe made up dramatic ground on the third leg of the relay with a personal best time of 2:26. Junior Erik Flores anhored the 4x800m relay to third place with an outstanding time of 2:29, for a total team time of 9:46. THE MUSTANGS BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD IN THE 4x200M RELAY BY THREE SECONDS WITH A TIME OF 1:43.12. Junior Jose Choto lead off the relay against an intense field, including sprint powerhouse Westmont High School, with a personal best 24.93 200m split to put the Mustangs in the lead inches ahead of Westmont High School. Freshman Hunter Speese ran a 26.37 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Junior Santino Merino took the baton and ran an outstanding 26.67 200m split, and made a nice exchange to Captain Geoff Edwards. Senior Geoff Edwards anchored the relay to second place, with 25.45 200m split, and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 1:43.12!!! The bench mark for elite high school milers is the five minute barrier. On Friday night, the Mustangs witnessed history, as Captain Preston Buehrer became the sixth athlete in the history of Northside to break the five minute barrier! Northside Junior Preston Buehrer ran the first 200m of the race in 32 seconds, and was at 69 seconds at 400m, and 1:47 through 600m, and 2:26 at 800m, and 3:06 through 1000m, and 3:47 at 1200m!, and 4:25 through 1400m, and had an outstanding kick on the final 200m for a personal best mile time of 4:59, and placed fifth overall. Preston Buehrer dropped 29 seconds from the Fenton Bison Indoor Classic! Senior John Holler also had a dramatic performance in the Mile. Holler was at 33 seconds for the first 200m of the race, and was at 70 seconds at 400m, and 1:48 through 600m, and 2:28 at 800m, and 3:08 through 1000m, and 3:49 at 1200m!, and 4:31 through 1400m, and ran a personal best mile time of 5:06, and placed sixth overall. John Holler dropped 11 seconds from the Niles West Invitational! Senior John Holler could be the next Mustang to break the five minute barrier at the Kenwood Invitational on March 24, 2007. Freshman Jaisong Yang also ran a personal best mile time of 5:23 (2:36/2:47). Freshman James Rey ran an outstanding time of 6:02 in his first high school Track Meet (2:55/3:07). The 400m Dash was one for the ages. Freshman Hunter Speese ran a personal best time of 58.80 to place fourth overall! Senior Geoff Edwards ran an outstanding time of 59.40 to place fifth overall! Erik Flores ran a personal best time of 59.80 to place sixth overall! Freshman Neal Capapas ran his first 200m in 26 seconds, and a personal best 400m time of 61.60. Freshman Peter Wilk ran a personal best 400m time of 66.40. In the 800m run, Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka ran a personal best time of 2:19 to place fourth overall. Sophomore Simon Vecchioni also ran an outstanding time of 2:19 to place fifth overall. Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda ran a personal best time of 2:28. Junior Santino Merino ran a personal best time of 2:29. Freshman Andrew Czyszczon ran a personal best time of 2:32. Junior Jacob Andrews tied his PR with a time of 2:42. In the 200m Dash, Geoff Edwards ran an outstanding time of 25.40 to place SECOND overall. Sophomore Martin Melto ran a personal best time of 26.61 to place sixth overall. Junior Erik Flores ran a time of 27.35. In the 4x400m Relay, Junior Jose Choto ran a 56.19 400m split on the first leg of relay! Sophomore Simon Vecchioni ran a 59.97 400m split on the second leg of the 4x400m relay. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran a 62.21 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Captain Preston Buehrer anchored the relay to second place with a 61.09 400m split, for a total time of 3:59.46. In the Triple Jump, U-High Sugaya jumped 41'11 to win it. Northside Vinh Nguyen jumped 24'1 to place fifth overall. In the Long Jump, Senior Geoff Edwards jumped 16'7 to place third overall. Sophomore Martin Melto jumped 16'4 to place fourth overall. Junior Erik Flores jumped 14'4 to place fifth overall. Freshman Hunter Speese jumped 14'3.5 to place sixth overall. Freshman Jaisong Yang jumped 13'6 to place seventh overall. Freshman Neal Capapas jumped 12'3.5 to placed eighth overall. The Mustangs were missing Joey Paquette, Albert Lin, and Wemi Jemmaine on Friday. Westmont won the meet with 88 points. U-High placed second with 67 points. Northside College Prep placed third with 44 points. North Shore Country Day placed fourth with 22 points. Wheaton Academy placed fifth with 20 points. The Northside College Prep Mustangs were the only TEAM in the meet that scored at least 1 or more points in EVERY event. Plaques will be awarded to the top 5 individual places, and top 4 relays. Entries will be posted on Tuesday, March 13, 2007. A Team Pasta Party for the entire team and coaching staff will take place on Friday, March 23, 2007, at Park Place Towers, the night before the first outdoor meet of the 2007 season. The points scale used for five teams, was 8-6-4-2-1 for Invidual events, and 8-6-4-2 for Relays. Northside College Prep won the UC Lab School Invite with 91 points! Uhigh placed second with 84 points. Westmont High School placed third with 37 points. North Shore Country Day School placed fourth with 18 points. Wheaton Academy placed fifth with 4 points. In the 3200m run, North Shore Country Day's Caitlin White won with an outstanding time of 13:18. Northside College Prep Senior Jessica Galang placed 3rd overall with a personal best time of 15:07. In the 55m Hurdles, Kelly Varney placed first overall with an outstanding time of 9.40. Jennifer Kane ran a pesonal best time of 10.88. Karen Li ran an outstanding time of 11.10. Amy Perez ran an outstanding time of 11.50. Maria Zdunek ran a time of 11.75. Alex Custer ran a personal best time of 12.39. In the 55m Dash, U-High A.McMahon won with a time of 7.6. In the Mile run, U-High Shannon Kimball won it. Carmen Abelson tied her season PR with an outstanding time of 6:22, to place fourth overall. Freshman Mahaim Haider placed 9th overall with a personal best time of 7:53. Freshman Jessica Tapia placed 10th overall with a time of 7:56. In the 400m Dash, Westmont's Carolyn Kalafut won it. Julie Bujnowski ran a time of 70 seconds to place third overall. Courtney Konow ran a time of 75 seconds to place sixth overall. Alex Custer ran a time of 84 seconds. Andrea Buiser ran a personal best time of 93 seconds. In the 800m run, Anna Parks WON with an outstanding time of 2:36. Parks ran 38 seconds for the first 200m, and was at 80 seconds for 400m, and 2:01 through 600m, and 2:36 to win the 800m run. Freshman Bessie Nolan placed 4th overall with an outstanding time of 2:51 (82/89). Nolan was at 39 seconds for the first 200m, and was at 82 seconds for 400m, and 2:09 through 600m, and 2:51 for 800m. Sophomore Monica Laytham had an outstanding 800m race in the first track meet of her high school career. Laytham was at 39 seconds for the first 200m, and was at 83 seconds for 400m, and 2:13 through 600m, and a Personal Best time of 2:59 for 800m (83/96). Monica Laytham placed fifth overall. Sophomore Jennifer Friedmann also had an outstanding 800m race in her first track meet of the season. Friedmann was at 41 seconds for the first 200m, and was at 86 seconds for 400m, and 2:17 through 600m, and an outstanding time of 3:09 for 800m (86/103). The Mustangs were very impressive in the 800m run. In the 200m Dash, U-High's A. McMahon won with a time of 28.3. Maria Torres ran an outstanding time of 29.58 to place fifth overall. Jennifer Kane ran a time of 30.10. Karen Li ran a time of 31.40 in a photo finish with Kaitlin Renkosiak. Renkosiak dropped 2 seconds off her PR, for a personal best time of 31.50! Gayatri Satam ran a time of 32.20. Stephanie Sotomayor ran a time of 34.20. In the 4x400m Relay, Julie Bujnowski ran a 400m split of 68.95 on the first leg of the relay and made a nice exchange to Kelly Varney. Kelly Varney ran a 72.61 400m split on the second leg of the 4x400m Relay. Natalie Hanigan ran a 71.44 400m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Anna Parks. Parks anchored the relay to 1st place with an outstanding 400m split of 68.40, for a total time of 4:41.40. In the Triple Jump, Northside's Maria Torres placed 1st with a jump of 31'8.75. Kelly Varney placed second overall with a jump of 28'5. Amina Jambo placed fourth overall with a jump of 25'5. Courtney Knonow placed fifth overall with a jump of 25'2. Kaitlin Renkosiak placed 6th overall with a jump of 23'3.5. In the Long Jump, Westmont's Rassiwalla tied for first with Maria Torres with a jump of 14'3.5. Northside's Julie Bujnowski jumped 13'10 to place third overall. Maria Zdunek placed fourth overall with a jump of 13'4. Gayatri Satam placed fifth overall with a jump of 12'4.
