On Friday, March 30, 2007, the Northside Womens Track and Field Team traveled to Hanson Stadium in Chicago, Illinois for the Lane Tech Relays. For the first time in school history, the Mustangs WON the Lane Tech Relays by scoring a record 74.50 points. The Mustangs posted victories over second place, Dunbar (64.00), third place, Lane Tech (58.50), fourth place, Walter Payton Prep (55.00), fifth place, Jones (41), sixth place, Marshall (34), Lake View (27), Prosser (24), Mather (23), Von Steuben (23), Schurz (10), 21st Centry (8), Clemente (7), Hope (4), and Whitney Young (3). In the Exhibition 4x200m Relay, Alice Thatcher ran a 200m split of 40.05. Stephanie Sotomayor ran a 36.38 200m split on the second leg of the Relay. Kaitlin Renkosiak ran a 33.15 200m split on the third leg of the Relay. Jennifer Kane anchored the 4x200m Relay with a 28.42 200m split, for a total time of 2:18.00. In the Exhibition 4x800m Relay, Alice Thatcher ran a 800m split of 3:35 (90/125). Maham Haider ran a 800m split of 3:28 (100/108). Jessica Tapia ran a 800m split of 3:33 (100/113). Andrea Busier anchored the relay with a 3:44 (105/119) 800m split. In the Long Jump, Maria Zdunek jumped 12'7 to place sixth overall. In the Triple Jump, Kelly Varney won it with a personal best jump of 29'3.50. Northside throwers have been arising at 5 am every morning this season to make to school in time for 6:15 am practices in the weight room and in the theatre hallway to practice shot put technique. The Northside throwers have also been attending Thursday morning clinics with the University of Chicago Throwers Coach Anna Swisher, and Whitney Young throwers Coach Anthony Jamison to practice Discus technique. The Mustangs have only recently been able to throw outside in the afternoon. The Mustangs dedication to morning and afternoon practices paid off on Friday night. In the Shot Put, Courtney Konow won it with a throw of 26'10. Kaitlin Renkosiak tied for fifth place with a personal best throw of 24'2.50. In the Discus, Kaitlin Renkosiak BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD and WON THE MEET with a personal best throw of 72'0! Stephanie Sotomayor threw the discus 40'01 to finish in 12th place. In the Distance Medley Relay, Monica Laytham ran a 4:42 (87/102/93) on the 1200m leg of the DMR, Courtney Konow ran a 79 on the 400m leg of the DMR, Meghan Schmit ran a 2:53 (83/90) on the 800m leg of the DMR, and Jaye Gardiner anchored the Mustangs to second place overall, with a 6:47 (98/106/113/96) on the 1600m leg of the DMR, for an outstanding time of 15:27.50. In the 100m Dash, Natalie Hanigan BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 13.84. Amy Perez ran a personal best 100m time of 14.59. In the 110m Hurdles, Kelly Varney BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD and WON THE MEET with a personal best time of 18.50. Jennifer Kane tied her PR to place fifth overall with a time of 19.90. In the Mile, Walter Payton Prep's Alexis Caldero won it with an outstanding time of 6:17. Northside Senior Jessica Galang placed seventh overall with a time of 7:31.40. Freshman Jessica Tapia placed ninth overall with a time of 7:59.56. Freshman Maham Haider placed tenth overall with a time of 7:59.58. In the 4x100m Relay, Karen Li (15.97), Adaora Achufusi (13.29), Maria Zdunek (15.68), and Natalie Hanigan (13.61) combined for a time of 58.55 for ninth place. In the 4x800m Relay, Amy Perez ran an outstanding 3:02 800m split on the first leg of the Relay. Monica Laytham ran a 2:58 800m split on the second leg of the Relay. Meghan Schmit ran a 2:55 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Jaye Gardiner anchored the 4x800m Relay with an outstanding 2:59 800m split for a total time of 11:55, to place third overall. In the 4x200m Relay, Natalie Hanigan ran a 31.59 200m split on the first leg of the Relay. Adoara Achufusi ran a 29.91 200m split on the second leg of the Relay. Jennifer Kane ran a 30.41 200m split on the third leg of the Relay. Kelly Varney ran a 28.21 200m split and anchored the Relay to a time of 2:00.30, and fifth place overall. In the 4x400m Relay, Karen Li ran a personal best 71.74 400m split on the first leg of the Relay. Kaitlin Renkosiak ran a 76.26 split on the second leg of the Relay. Courtney Konow ran a 79.00 split on the third leg of the 4x400m Relay. Natalie Hanigan anchored the 4x400m Relay, with a 73.28 split for a combined time of 5:00.28, to place fifth overall. On Friday, March 30, 2007, the Northside Men's Track and Field Team traveled to Hanson Stadium on the corner of Fullerton and Central in Chicago, Illinois for the Lane Tech Relays. In the Exhibition 4x800m Relay, Junior Erik Flores ran a personal best 800m time of 2:22 (67/75) on the first leg of the Relay. Sophomore Brian Chhun tied his PR with a 2:29 (72/77) 800m split on the second leg of the Relay. Freshman Cooper Eben also tied his PR with a 2:33 (74/79) 800m split on the third leg of the Relay. Senior Joey Paquette anchored the 4x800m Relay with a 2:35 (75/80) 800m split, for an outstanding total time of 9:59. In the Exhibition 4x200m (A), Vinh Nguyen, Sam Olver, Tenzin Wangdhen, and Peter Wilk combined for a total time of 1:59.93. In the Exhibition 4x200m (B), Thomas Nguyen (30.00), Nathan Michaelson (27.92), Brad Eben (34.94), and Robert Garcia (29.10) combined for a total time of 2:01.96. In the Exhibition 4x200m (C), Coleman Gailloreto (42.00), Neibu Tadele (32.55), Alejandro Valdivieso (31.84), and Prasanth Bijjam (31.84) combined for a total time of 2:18.23 In the Long Jump, Sophomore Martin Melto placed sixth overall with a jump of 16'3.50. Sophomore Albert Lin placed seventh overall with a jump of 16'2.25. In the Triple Jump, Sophomore Albert Lin placed fifth overall with a jump of 35'10.00. Jaisong Yang jumped 29'8.00. In the Shot put, Robert Garcia placed 19th overall with a personal best throw of 28'4. In the Discus, Vinh Nguyen threw a personal best throw of 51'4. Gustavo Hernandez threw a personal best throw of 51'2. In the High Jump, Sophomore Eric Nelson High Jumped for the first time in the 2007 season, after recovering from an off-season ankle injury. The conditions were windy and rainy. Captain Eric Nelson picked up where he left off in 2006, by tieing for FIRST PLACE with Marshal's Maurice Balnton with a personal best jump of 5'10. The tie was broken, by the total of misses in the competition, and Nelson had the least misses, and was awarded sole possession of first place. Mather's Duryea Briscoe placed third with a jump of 5'8. Northside Sophomore Wemi Jemine placed forth with a personal best jump of 5'6. Walter Payton's Leroy Gordon placed fifth with a jump of 5'4. In the Distance Medley Relay, Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka ran a 3:42 (68/76/78) on the 1200m leg of the Relay. Junior Santino Merino ran a personal best 61 seconds on the 400m leg of the Relay. Sophomore Simon Vecchioni ran a 2:28 (67/81) on the 800m leg of the Relay. Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda anchored the Distance Medley Relay to fifth place with a 5:22 Mile (75/85/86/76) for a total time of 12:33.40. In the 100m Dash, Sophomore Martin Melto ran a personal best time of 12.69. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran a personal best time of 13.06. In the 110m Hurdles, Albert Lin ran a season best 20.15 to place seventh overall. Santino Merino dropped 4 seconds off his PR, for a personal best time of 20.89 to place ninth overall. In the 4x100m Relay, Martin Melto, Santino Merino, Brian Chhun, and Jose Choto TIED the SCHOOL RECORD with a combined time of 50.47. The 2003 Alumni now share the record with Martin Melto, Santino Merino, Brian Chhun, and Jose Choto. In the 4x800m Relay, Junior Harold Jaffe ran a 2:24 on the first leg of the Relay. Adam Swiatlowski ran a 2:36 on the second leg of the Relay. Freshman Nick Ruff ran a 2:33 on the third leg of the Relay. Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda anchored the Relay to fifth place with a 2:29 800m split, for a total time of 10:02. In the Mile, Whitney Young Senior Griffin Lawler won it with a 4:42.70. Whitney Young's Dave Cordova placed second with a time of 4:52.50. Whitney Young Senior Ethan Heppner finished in third place with an outstanding time of 4:53.20. Northside Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka broke the five minute barrier with a personal best time of 4:56.40 to place fourth overall. The five minute barrier is the bench mark for elite high school milers. Mather's Marcus Jabir ran a time of 5:00.70 to place fifth overall. Lane Tech's Fernando Arroyo ran a time of 5:00.90 to place sixth overall. Lane Tech's Gerardo Gonzalez ran a time of 5:03.07 to place seventh overall. Lane Tech's Irving Albarrain ran a time of 5:06.40 to place eighth overall. Lake View's Sirak Areki ran a time of 5:08.30 to place ninth overall. Lake View's Alex Agafonov ran a time of 5:21.30 to place tenth overall. Northside Sophomore Simon Vecchioni ran a personal best time of 5:26.60. Simon Vecchioni dropped 19 seconds off his PR! In the 4x400m Relay, Neal Capapas ran a 59.4 on the first leg of the Relay. Sophomore Simon Vecchioni ran a 61.30 on the second leg of the Relay. On Saturday, March 24, 2007, the Northside College Prep Varsity Mens Track & Field Team traveled to historic Walter Eckersall Memorial Stadium on the corner of 82nd Street and Yates in Chicago, Illinois for the Kenwood Classic. In 1947, the City of Chicago built Walter Eckersall Memorial Stadium. Walter Eckersall set a ten-second-flat Illinois hundred-yard dash record in 1903 that stood for 25 years until the future Olympian Ralph Metcalfe broke it in 1928. Eckersall attended Hyde Park High School, and ran rings around opponents on the football field. He lead his high school team to a 105-0 victory for the National Championship against Brooklyn Tech. Fifthteen year old Knute Rockne sneaked into the park to see it. Walter Eckersall became an All American at the University of Chicago in Track and Football, and was inducted into the College Football hall of fame. Amos Alonzo Stagg called Eckersall, "a selfless performer...marked by complete dedication". Walter Eckersall would have been proud of the performance by the Northside Varsity Men at the 2007 Kenwood Classic. The meet featured over thirty schools including: Amundsen, Bogan, Bronzeville, Brooks, Calumet, CICS, Clemente, Corliss, Curie, Driscoll, Dunbar, Dyett, Grays Lake, Harlan, Hubar, IL Science, Immaculate Conception, Julian, Kelvyn Park, Kennedy, Lake View, Marshall, Mather, Morgan Park, Morton, Northridge, Park, Payton, Providence, South Shore, Benedict, Steinmetz, Sullivan, Von Steuben, Quigley Prep, and Washington. The point scale used for the meet was 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, with eight places scoring. The Northside Mustangs finished fourth overall, and were within 5.5 points of second place, despite not competing in the Weightman's Relay and High Jump. The Mustangs posted 32 victories on the day! In the open 800m, the Mustangs were led by Freshman Andrew Czyszczon with a personal best time of 2:25. Junior Adam Swiatlowski ran an outstanding time of 2:26. Freshman Nickolas Ruff dropped 4 seconds in less than a week for a personal best 800m time of 2:29. Freshman Cooper Eben ran a personal best time of 2:33. Senior Joey Paquette ran a season best time of 2:34. Sophomore Nathan Michaelson ran a personal best time of 2:36. Junior Brad Eben ran a time of 2:37. Junior Faraz Khan ran a time of 2:39. Freshman James Rey ran a personal best time of 2:47. Freshman Jared Goldstein ran a personal best time of 2:49. Junior Vinh Nguyen ran a personal best time of 2:50. Sophomore Coleman Gailloreto ran a personal best time of 2:53. In the Discus, Preston Buehrer threw a personal best of 75'0. In the Shot put, Robert Garcia threw a personal best of 27'2.5. Junior Vinh Nguyen threw a personal best of 24'8.5, an improvement of over 3'0!. In the 3200m run, Jonathan Kittaka outkicked Lakeview's Areki to the finish to win it with a personal best time of 10:32 (5:11/5:21). Kittaka was awarded a medal for first place. Preston Buehrer ran a personal best time of 10:50 (5:19/5:31) to place fifth overall and secure vital points for the Mustangs. GRN's Cerk finished in sixth place with a time of 10:55. Mather's Hernandez finished in seventh place with a time of 11:12. Driscol's Woosley finished in eigth place with a time of 11:20 to complete the scoring. In the 4x100m Relay, Sophomore Martin Melto ran a 12.29 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran a 12.51 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Junior Erik Flores ran a 13.64 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Junior Jose Choto ran a 12.16 100m split on the fourth leg of relay, for a combined time of 50.60. In the 4x800m Relay, Senior John Holler dropped 7 seconds off his personal best time for an outstanding 2:10 800m split, and made a nice exchange to Junior Harold Jaffe. Jaffe ran a personal best time of 2:21 on the second leg of the 4x800m Relay. Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda ran a personal best time of 2:20 on the third leg of the 4x800m Relay. Senior Patrick O'Connor anchored the 4x800m Relay to fourth place overall with a season best 2:15 800m split, for a total time of 9:06. In the 110m Hurdles, Andrew Czyszczon ran a personal best time of 22.47. Junior Santino Merino recovered instantly from a fall, and ran a personal best time of 24.32. In the 100m Dash, Preston Buehrer placed third in his heat, with a personal best time of 12.41. Buehrer came within .27 of the school record (12.14). In the 800m run, Senior John Holler ran the first quarter in 62 seconds, and ran the second quarter in 68 seconds to place fifth overall with a personal best time of 2:10 (62/68). Holler came within 1.39 seconds of the the school record (2:08.61). Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka placed ninth overall in the 800m run with a personal best time of 2:16 (64/72). The Mustangs had to scratch the weightmen's Relay due Eric Nelson missing the bus, and relay alternate Alejandro Valdivieso did not show up to the meet. In the 4x200m Relay, Sophomore Martin Melto ran a 26.79 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Junior Santino Merino ran a 25.80 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran a 26.55 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Freshman Neal Capapas ran a 25.56 split on the fourth leg of the relay, for a combined time of 1:45.10. A year ago, Geoff Edwards ran his first 400m race ever as part of the 4x400m relay at the Kenwood Classic with a 64 seconds 400m split. In 2007, at the same meet, one year later, in the 400m Dash, Senior Geoff Edwards BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 56.70 to place third overall! The record was previously held by Danny Garcia (56.92, 2003). Edwards was awarded a Medal for placing third overall. Junior Jose Choto ran an outstanding time of 60.06. In the 300m Hurdles, Junior Santino Merino ran a personal best time of 52.70. Freshman Andrew Czyszczon ran a personal best time of 57.10. In the 1600m run, the Mustangs one-two punch of Patrick O'Connor and Preston Buehrer yielded 18 points for Northside. The maximum points a Team can score in an event is 18. Senior Patrick O'Connor broke away from Kenwood's Whitfield in the final 400 meters to win it with an outstanding time of 5:01 (2:30/2:31). Junior Preston Buehrer was in fifth place, and outkicked Mather's Garth (5:11), ILMS Olilvie (5:10), and Kenwood's Whitfield (5:08) in the final 200 meters to place second overall with an outstanding time of 5:05 (2:31/2:34). Patrick O'Connor and Preston Buehrer were awarded Medals for placing 1st and 2nd in the Mile. In the 200m Dash, Senior Geoff Edwards and Junior Jose Choto toed the line to attempt to break Jonathan Miller 200m Dash School record (25.09, 2003), and score vital points for the Mustangs. Choto and Edwards both came through for the Team. Jose Choto placed fifth overall with a personal best time of 24.77. Geoff Edwards BROKE HIS SECOND SCHOOL RECORD OF THE DAY with a personal best time of 24.35 to tie for third place overall with Morgan Park's Turner. Edwards was awarded a Medal for placing Third in the 200m Dash. Thanks to the efforts of Jose Choto and Geoff Edwards, the Mustangs scored 9.5 points in the 200m Dash! In the 4x400m Relay, the Mustangs placed 2nd overall, with a time of 3:59.48. Freshman Neal Capapas ran an outstanding 58.83 400m split on the first leg of the Relay. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran an outstanding 61.44 400m split on the second leg of the Relay. Junior Erik Flores ran an outstanding 60.33 400m split on the third leg of the Relay and made a nice exchange to Senior John Holler. On Saturday, March 24, 2007, the Northside College Prep Women Varsity Track & Field Team traveled to historic Walter Eckersall Memorial Stadium for the 2007 Kenwood Classic, featuring Amundsen, Bogan, Bronzeville, Brooks, Calumet, CICS, Clemente, Corliss, Curie, Driscoll, Dunbar, Dyett, Grays Lake, Harlan, Hubbard, IL Science, Immaculate Conception, Julian, Kelvyn Park, Kennedy, Lake View, Marshall, Mather, Morgan Park, Morton, Northridge, Parker, Payton, Providence, South Shore, Benedict, Steinmetz, Sullivan, Von Steuben, Quigley Prep, and Washington. Meghan Schmit, Amina Jambo, Gabrielle Frankel, Alice Thatcher, Chynna Moerlin, Amy Perez, and Courtney Quigley did not show up to the meet. The bus was scheduled to leave at 7:45 am, but left at 7:55 am. Ani Zotti missed the bus, and left a message on Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon's answering machine. Despite missing several athletes, the Mustangs overcame it, and had one of their best meets of the season, and several school records were broken. The Northside Women placed fourth overall, and posted 32 victories on the day! In the open 800m run, Andrea Buiser ran a personal best time of 3:25. Mahaim Haider ran a personal best time of 3:28. Freshman Jessica Tapia ran a personal best time of 3:29. In the Shot Put, Junior Courtney Konow BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best throw of 28'1. In the Triple Jump, Maria Torres placed second overall with a jump of 32'4. Torres was awarded a Medal for placing second. Kelly Varney placed 6th overall with a jump of 27'11.5. In the 3200m Run, Senior Jaye Gardiner placed sixth overall with a personal best time of 13:58. Senior Jessica Galang ran a time of 15:51. In the 4x100m Relay, Karen Li ran a 15.59 100m split on the first leg of the 4x100m Relay. Maria Zdunek ran a 15.26 100m split on the second leg of the 4x100m Relay. Gayatri Satam ran a 14.00 100m split on the third leg of the 4x100m Relay, and Senior Natalie Hanigan anchored the 4x100m relay with a 14.67 100m split, for a combined time of 59.52. In the 4x800m Relay, Anna Parks ran a 2:37 800m split on the first leg of the Relay. Freshman Bessie Nolan ran a 2:45 800m split on the second leg of the Relay. Sophomore Monica Laytham ran a 2:54 800m split on the third leg of the Relay and made a nice exchange to Captain Rachel Kittaka. Junior Rachel Kittaka anchored the 4x800m relay to victory with a 2:39 800m split, for a total time of 10:55.94. Anna Parks, Bessie Nolan, Monica Laytham, and Rachel Kittaka were awarded Medals for placing 1st overall. In the 100m Hurdles, Kelly Varney placed seventh overall with a time of 18.90. Jennifer Kane ran an outstanding time of 19.90. In the 100m Dash, Senior Natalie Hanigan BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 14.25. The record was previously held by Isis Jackson (14.38, 2003). In the 800m Run, Sophomore Anna Parks won it with an outstanding time of 2:41. Parks was awarded a Medal for placing first in the 800m run. Freshman Bessie Nolan ran an outstanding time of 2:51. In the Weightwomen's 4x100m Relay (athletes required to have competed in Discus and/or Shot Put this season to be on the Relay), Stephanie Sotomayor ran a 15.16 100m split on the first leg of the Relay. Kaitlin Renkosiak ran 15.44 100m split on the second leg of the Relay. Jennifer Mensah ran a 19.00 100m split on the third leg of the Relay. Courtney Konow anchored the relay to fourth place with a 15.21 100m split, for a combined time of 64.81. In the 4x200m Relay, Senior Natalie Hanigan and Sophomore Maria Torres had trouble making the hand-off, and as a result Hanigan ran a 32.04 200m split on the first leg of the Relay. Torres recovered with an outstanding 28.43 200m split on the second leg of the Relay. Adaora Achufusi ran a 29.01 200m split on the third leg of the Relay. Kelly Varney anchored the 4x200m Relay with an outstanding 26.00 200m split, for a combined time of 1:57.48. In the 400m Dash, Julie Bujnowski placed fourth overall with a time of 66.80. In the 300m Hurdles, Maria Zdunek ran an outstanding time of 60.03. Alex Custer had trouble seeing the first hurdle in the afternoon fog, and then had an outstanding recovery in which she flew over every hurdle for a time of 73.31. In the 1600m run, there was a very impressive field, including IHSA Sectional Champion Venessa Dain of Driscoll High School in Addison, Illinois. Dain was one of the top finishers in last year's state meet. Rachel Kittaka rose up to the challenge. Rachel Kittaka and Venessa Dain ran toe to toe lap after lap. They went through 400m in 77 seconds, 800m in 2:45, and 1200m in 4:13. They were still toe-to-toe in the final 300 meters. Dain edged Kittaka in the final 20 meters of the race to win it. Rachel Kittaka placed second overall and BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 5:40.00. Kittaka was awarded a Medal for placing second overall. Sophomore Jennifer Friedmann ran a personal best time of 7:03 in the first mile race of her career. In the 200m Dash, Maria Torres ran an outstanding time of 28.75. Adaora Achufusi ran a time of 29.20. In the 4x400m Relay, the Mustangs won it, with a combined time of 4:40.30. Julie Bujnowski ran a 65.04 400m split, and made a nice exchange to Courtney Konow. Konow ran a 75.96 400m split. Senior Natalie Hanigan ran a 68.70 400m split on the Third leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Anna Parks. Parks was feeling sick after the 4x800m, and 800m run, and was originally scratched from the relay. However, she felt better before the race started and asked to be put back in. Parks returned just in time to anchored the Mustangs to victory with an outstanding 70.60 400m split, for a combined time of 4:40.30.
