On Saturday, April 7, 2007, the Northside College Prep Womens Track & Field Team traveled to River Park Track on North Park University's campus for the 7th annual Mather Invitational. With temperatures near 20 degrees, the Mustangs set up a Team Tent complete with walls to protect the athletes from high winds, and drank hot chocolate in addition to gatorade and water. The Long Jump and Triple Jump were canceled due to the sand pit being frozen. Despite the conditions, the Mustangs had one of their best meets of the season. In 2006, the Northside Women placed 12th at the Mather Invitational. In 2007, the Northside Women brought home the Third Place Team Trophy!!! The Mustangs went from 12th to 3rd place in one season, and were by far the most improved Team in the meet. Medals were awarded to the top six athletes in each event. The scoring scale for the meet was 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. Lane Tech won the meet with 108.50 points, Mather placed second with 76.50 points, NORTHSIDE COLLEGE PREP placed third with 67 points, and posted victories over Whitney Young (54), Steinmetz (42), Julian (39), Seton Academy (36), Fenger (27), Jones (27), Walter Payton (25), Prosser (25), Foreman (15), Clemente (9), Von Steuben (9), South Shore (6), Schurz (2), and others (0). In the open Mile, Northside parent David Parks (Father of Anna Parks) came prepared to race, and wore his high school jersey (Carroll high school, in Washington D.C.) and medaled by running an outstanding mile time of 5:41. Parks went through the first 400 meters in 70 seconds, and was at 2:34 for 800m, and 4:11 for 1200m, and 5:41 for the Mile. Northside Freshman Jessica Tapia ran a 7:46 in the open Mile. Freshman Mahaim Haider ran a time of 7:53. Andrea Buiser ran a time of 8:24. Sophomore Alice Thatcher ran a personal best time of 8:58. In the Discus, Kelly Varney won it with a NEW SCHOOL RECORD throw of 72'01! Kelly Varney was awarded a Medal for winning the Discus. Kaitlin Renkosiak placed fourth in the Discus with a throw of 56'02. Renkosiak was awarded a Medal for placing fourth overall in the Discus. In the Shot Put, Kelly Varney placed fifth overall with a personal best throw of 24'02.25. Kaitlin Renkosiak placed sixth overall with a personal best throw of 23'10.00. In the 4x800m Relay, Monica Laytham ran a 2:58 800m split on the first leg of the Relay. Jaye Gardiner ran a 3:00 800m split on the second leg of the Relay. Amy Perez ran a 2:58 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Junior Rachel Kittaka anchored the relay to third place overall with a 2:51.90 800m split, for a total time of 11:47.90. Monica Laytham, Jaye Gardiner, Amy Perez, and Rachel Kittaka were awarded Medals for placing third overall. In the 4x100m Relay, Karen Li ran a 16.17 100m split on the first leg of the Relay. Amy Perez ran a 15.76 100m split on the second leg of the Relay. Maria Zdunek ran a 15.67 100m split on the third leg of the Relay. Gayatri Satam anchored the Relay to a eighth place finish overall, with a 16.06 100m split, for a total time of 1:03.66. In the 3200m run, Jessica Galang finished in ninth overall with a time of 17:17. Galang ran the first mile in 8:04, and finsihed with a 9:13 mile. In the 100m Hurdles, Senior Amy Perez finished in fifth place with an outstanding time of 22.95. Perez was awarded a Medal for placing fifth overall. Sophomore Alice Thatcher scored vital points for the Mustangs by placing seventh overall with a personal best time of 25.17. In the 100m Dash, Sophomore Adaora Achufusi placed 19th overall with an outstanding time of 15.56. Senior Amy Perez, in her fourth event of the day, placed 22nd overall with a time of 15.90. In the 800m run, Monica Laytham ran 83 seconds for her 400m, and was in ninth place with 300 meters, and passed four athletes in the final 300 meters to place fifth overall with an outstanding time of 2:52 (83/90). Laytham was awarded a medal for placing fifth overall. In the 4x200m Relay, Kaitlin Renkosiak, Karen Li, Adaora Achufusi, and Gayatri Satam, combined for a time of 2:08.45 to place sixth overall. Renkosiak, Li, Achufusi, and Satam were awarded Medals for placing sixth overall. In the 400m run, Freshman Jessica Tapia placed 14th overall with a time of 88.05. Freshman Mahaim Haider placed 15th overall with a time of 94.45. In the 300m Hurdles, Sophomore Maria Zdunek placed third overall with an outstanding time of 59.99. Zdunek came within one second of breaking the school record. Maria Zdunek was awarded a medal for placing third overall. Sophomore Alice Thatcher placed seventh overall with an outstanding time of 78.64. In the Mile, 2006 State Cross Country qualifiers, Whitney Young's Rachel Joravsky (5:36.8) and Devyn Thompson (5:40.41) placed first and second overall. Northside Junior Rachel Kittaka ran an outstanding race, 78 seconds for the first 400m, 2:47 at the 800m, 4:17 for 1200m, and a 5:47 Mile to place third overall. Rachel Kittaka was awarded a Medal for placing third overall. Sophomore Anna Parks in her first Mile race of her career, placed fourth overall with an outstanding time of 5:51. Parks went through the 400m in 81 seconds, and was at 2:53 for the 800m, 4:25 for 1200m, and a 5:51 Mile to place fourth overall. Anna Parks was awarded a Medal for placing fourth overall. In the 200m Dash, Sophomore Adaora Achufusi placed 12th overall with a time of 31.57. In the 4x400m Relay, Captain Rachel Kittaka ran a 74.58 400m split on the first leg of the Relay. Kaitlin Renkosiak ran a 75.22 400m split on the second leg of the Relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Monica Laytham. Monica Laytham ran a 75.66 400m split on the third leg of the Relay. Freshman Karen Li anchored the Relay to third place overall, with a 76.51 400m split, for a total time of 5:01.97. Rachel Kittaka, Kaitlin Renkosiak, Monica LAytham, and Karen Li were awarded a Medal for placing third overall. The Mustangs will travel to Deerfield High School on Tuesday to face IHSA Sectional rivals Deerfield and Glenbrook North High school in a triangular meet. Senior Natalie Hanigan and Freshman Bessie Nolan will become the first female athletes in the history of Northside to Pole Vault at the Deerfield Invitational. On Saturday, April 7, 2007, the Northside Varsity Men Track and Field Team traveled to River Park Track on North Park University Campus for the 7th Annual Mather Invitational. The conditions included 20 degrees weather and a few snow flurries. The Long Jump and Triple Jump were canceled because the sand pit was frozen. During the winter, the Mustangs are without an indoor track, and spend a lot of time training in difficult conditions at River Park and were well prepared for the unseasonable weather. As a result, the Mustangs had one of their best meets of the season in the toughest conditions. In 2006, the Northside Men placed 11th at the Mather Invitational. In 2007, the Northside Men finished in fourth place, within 2 points of the Third Place Trophy. The Mustangs jump from 11th place to 4th place in one year was by far the most improved Team in the meet. Mather High School won the meet. Lane Tech finished in second. Marshal finished in third with 56 points. NORTHSIDE COLLEGE PREP finished in fourth with 54 points, and posted victories over Walter Payton (38 points), Prosser (37 points), Lincoln Park (36 points), South Shore (36 points), CICS (27 points), Clemente (24 points), Julian (22 points), Steinmetz (8 points), Seton Academy (4 points), Urban Prep (3 points), Foreman (1 point), Von Steunben (1 point), and others (0 points). Medals were awarded to the top six athletes in each event, and the scoring scale used was 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. In the open mile, Northside Alumni Daniel Kittaka earned a Medal with an outstanding time of 5:03. Daniel Kittaka went through 400m in 69 seconds, and was at 2:25 for 800 meters, 3:42 for 1200 meters, and 5:03 (2:25/2:38) for the Mile. Junior Harold Jaffe ran an outstanding time of 5:36 (2:43/2:53). Senior Joey Paquette ran an outstanding time of 6:03 (2:53/3:10). Freshman Andrew Czyszczon ran an outstanding time of 6:10 (2:46/3:24). Freshman James Rey ran a time of 6:16 (3:00/3:16). Junior Faraz Khan ran a time of 6:17 (3:05/3:12). Freshman Peter Wilk had raced no distance longer than 400m prior to the race, and ran an outstanding time of 6:18 (3:04/3:14). In the High Jump, Marshall Senior Maurice Blanton won it with a jump of 6'0. Northside Captain Eric Nelson placed third overall, and tied his personal best with a jump of 5'10. Nelson also scored for the Mustangs in the Shot Put and Discus. Eric Nelson was awarded a Medal for placing third overall in the High Jump. In the Shot Put, Eric Nelson placed seventh overall with an outstanding throw of 36'5.25. Senior Robert Garcia placed 19th with a throw of 27'11. In the Discus, Eric Nelson placed seventh overall with a personal best throw of 81'11. Preston Buehrer placed ninth overall with a personal best throw of 76'01, and came within 2'0 of scoring in four events in one meet. In the 4x800m Relay, Preson Buehrer ran a 2:21 800m split (64/77) on the first leg of the Relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Simon Vecchioni. Vecchioni ran a 2:32 800m split (67/85) on the second leg of the relay. Junior Erik Flores ran a 2:32 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Harold Jaffe anchored the Mustangs to fifth place overall, with a 2:31 800m split (68/83), for a total time of 9:56. Preston Bueher, Simon Vecchioni, Erik Flores, and Harold Jaffe were awarded Medals for placing fifth overall. In the 4x100m Relay, Senior Geoff Edwards lead off with a 12.16 100m split, and made a nice exchange to Junior Santino Merino. Merino ran an outstanding 12.34 100m split, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Brian Chhun. Brian Chhun ran an outstanding 12.76 100m split and made a nice exchange to Jose Choto. Junior Jose Choto anchored the Mustangs to ninth overall, with a 12.60 100m split, and a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 50.46! The previous school record was 50.47, and was set in 2003, and had lasted for four years. In the 3200m run, Mather Senior Carlos Hernandez won it with a time of 10:31.40. Lane Tech Senior Joel Wojcik placed second with a time of 10:37.80. Northside Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka finished in third place overall with an outstanding time of 10:38 (5:07/5:31). Lane Tech Sophomore Fernando Arroyo placed fourth with a time of 10:49. Mather Senior Darko Golub placed fifth with a time of 10:51. Lincoln Park Junior Derek Schnake finished sixth with a time of 10:56. Northside Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda finished seventh with a personal best time of 11:28 (5:37/5:51). Pineda dropped 3 seconds off his personal best time. Clemente Sophomore Thomas Gray-Cole completed the scoring by placing eighth. Jonathan Kittaka was awarded a Medal for placing third overall. In the 110m Hurdles, Junior Santino Merino placed eighth overall to score vital points for the Mustangs with an outstanding time of 21.93. Freshman Andrew Czyszczon placed tenth overall with a time of 24.52. In the 100m Dash, Northside Captain Preston Buehrer placed 4th overall with a personal best time of 12.31. Buehrer is now within .17 of a second of Jonathan Miller's 2003 school record (12.14). In the 800m run, Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda placed eigth overall with an outstanding time of 2:24.91. (67/77) Sophomore Simon Vecchioni placed 17th overall with a time of 2:31 (72/79). In the 4x200m Relay, Erik Flores ran a 26.43 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Santino Merino ran a 26.71 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Freshman Neal Capapas ran a 27.13 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Junior Jose Choto anchored the Mustangs to seventh overall with a 26.66 200m split, for a total time of 1:46.93. In the 400m run, Senior Geoff Edwards BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 55.61 to place third overall. Edwards was awarded a Medal for placing third overall. In the 300m Hurdles, Junior Santino Merino placed 11th overall with an outstanding time of 51.83. Freshman Andrew Czyszczon placed 15th overall with an outstanding time of 60.76. In the Mile, Mather Senior Carlos Hernandez won it with a time of 4:55.16. Lincoln Park Junior Derek Schnake finished in second with a time of 4:58.33. Mather Senior Darko Golub finished in third with a time of 5:01.47. Northside Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka finished in fourth with a time of 5:01.73. Kittaka went through 400m in 67 seconds, and was at 2:22 at the 800m, and went through 1200m in 3:45, and finished with a time of 5:01 (67/75/83/76). Jonathan Kittaka was awarded a Medal for placing fourth overall. Lane Tech Senior Joel Wojcik finished in fifth place with a time of 5:07. Lincoln Park Junior Henry Mattingly finished in sixth place with a time of 5:08. Northside Junior Preston Buehrer finished in seventh place with a time of 5:14. Buehrer went through 400m in 69 seconds, and was at 2:30 at 800m, and went through 1200m in 3:55, and finished with a time of 5:14 (69/81/85/79). Clemente Sophomore Thomas Gray-Cole completed the scoring by placing eighth overall. In the 200m, Geoff Edwards placed fourth overall with an outstanding time of 24.52. Jose Choto placed seventh overall with an outstanding time of 25.61. Geoff Edwards was awarded a Medal for placing fourth overall. PINEAPPLE CHALLENGE WINNERS

On Wednesday, April 4, 2007, after four grueling 600m repeats in 28 degrees weather, and high winds, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon challenged the Mustangs to hit a fifth 600m repeat at Mile Goal pace. Jonathan Kittaka, Preston Buehrer, Cuitlahuac Pineda, Santino Merino, Irfan Hussain, Robert Garcia, Joey Paquette, and James Rey all earned a Pineapple by running their final 600m repeat at Mile Goal pace. Ani Zotti came within one second of earning a pineapple. Who will win the next Pineapple challenge?image
On Friday, March 30, 2007, Senior John Holler, Senior Geoff Edwards, Junior Preston Buehrer, and Senior Patrick O'Connor traveled to Bloomington, Illinois to prepare for the Distance Medley Relay in the Illinois Prep Top Times Invitational ("Illinois Indoor State Championships"). The meet features the best athletes in the State in every event. The athletes stayed in deluxe accomadations, at the Country Inn. All of the athletes stayed in suites that were complete with King Size beds, refrigerator, microwave, a seperate living room, multiple televisions, a swimming pool, and fitness center. Friday evening, the Mustangs dined at the Olive Garden, and then spent the rest of the evening enjoying the amenities of the hotel. The hotel was filled with the best athletes from around the State, and resembled an Olympic Village. On Saturday, March 31, 2007, the Mustangs traveled to a indoor stadium at Illinois Wesleyan University for the Illinois Prep Top Times Invitational. The stadium was at full capacity, and all athletes were kept in a large turf room, until it was time for the meet officials to bring them on to the Track for their respective event. After the 200m Dash reached its conclusion, the Mustangs were brought onto the Track for the Distance Medley Relay. The Distance Medley Relay (herein "DMR") consisted of 800m, 400m, 1200m, and the Mile. The school record for the DMR was 11:59, set in 2006 by Joseph Terdik, Preston Buehrer, Daniel Kittaka, and Bobby Ziegler. John Holler, Geoff Edwards, Preston Buehrer, and Patrick O'Connor Mustangs BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD in the Distance Medely Relay by over 30 seconds, with an outstanding time of 11:28.70. Senior John Holler led off the Distance Medley Relay with a 27 seconds split for the first 200m of the 800m leg of the DMR, and followed it was a 32 seconds split on the second 200m, for a 59 seconds 400m split. Holler ran another 32 seconds split on the third 200m, for a 1:31 600m split. Holler finished the 800m leg of the Distance Medley Relay with a 35.34 200m, for a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 2:06.34 for the 800m run!! John Holler made a nice exchange to Captain Geoff Edwards. Senior Geoff Edwards ran the first 200m of the 400m leg of the DMR in 24.66 seconds. Edwards ran a 30.96 split on the second 200m, for a 55.62 400m split!!! Geoff Edwards made a nice exchange to Captain Preston Buehrer. Junior Preston Buehrer ran the first 200m of the 1200m leg of the DMR in 29.04 seconds. Buehrer ran a 36 seconds split on the second 200m of the 1200m leg of the DMR for a 400m split of 65 seconds. Buehrer ran the second 400m split (36/38) in 74 seconds, for an 800m split of 2:19. Preston Buehrer showed great endurance by running a second consecutive 74 seconds 400m split (36/38) on the final 400m of the 1200m leg of the DMR, for a personal best 1200m split of 3:33.04!!! Preston Buehrer made a nice exchange to Captain Patrick O'Connor. Senior Patrick O'Connor ran the first 200m of the 1600m leg of the DMR in 30 seconds. O'Connor ran a 35 seconds split on the second 200m of the 1600m leg of the DMR for a 400m split of 65 seconds. O'Connor ran the second 400m split (35/38) in 73 seconds, for an 800m split of 2:18. Patrick O'Connor ran the third 400m split (38/40) in 78 seconds, for a 1200m split of 3:36. Patrick O'Connor ran the final 400m (39/38.70) in 78.70 seconds, for a season best mile time of 4:53.70!!! O'Connor anchored the Mustangs to a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 11:28.70!! The Mustangs celebrated the new school records in the Mens and Womens Distance Medley Relays and Maria Torres outstanding performance in the Triple Jump on the bus with sparkling grape juice, and a dinner stop in Briadwood, Illinois at Antonia's fine Italian Cuisine (home of the largest Pizza Puffs in the world). Maria Torres was the youngest jumper to qualify for the meet, and jumped 33'06.25, 33'07.25, and 33'08.25 to finish 19th in the State. After the 200m Dash reached its conclusion, the Mustangs Distance Medely Team was brought onto the Track. The Distance Medley Relay (herein "DMR") consisted of 800m, 400m, 1200m, and the Mile. The school record for the DMR was 14:54, set in 2006 by -Anna Parks, Julie Bujnowski, Rachel Kittaka, and Maruja Yoshimura. Anna Parks, Julie Bujnowski, Ani Zotti, and Rachel Kittaka BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD in the Distance Medely Relay by over a minute!, with an outstanding time of 13:28.20!!! The Mustangs upset Lake Zurich (13:33.84), Glenbrook South (14:06.31), and Argo (14:06.33), to finish 9th overall, and were within 2.5 seconds of reaching the Medal stand. Parks ran another 43 seconds split on the third 200m, for a 1:53 600m split. Anna Parks finished the 800m leg of the Distance Medley Relay with a 39 seconds 200m split, for an outstanding 800m time of 2:32. Anna Parks made a nice exchange to Julie Bujnowski. Senior Julie Bujnowski ran the first 200m of the 400m leg of the DMR in 31.00 seconds. Bujnowski ran a 33.57 split on the second 200m, for a 64.57 400m split!!! Julie Bujnowski made a nice exchange to Ani Zotti. Sophomore Ani Zotti ran the first 200m of the 1200m leg of the DMR in 34.43 seconds. Zotti ran a 41 seconds split on the second 200m of the 1200m leg of the DMR for a 400m split of 75.43 seconds. Zotti ran the second 400m split (44/44) in 88 seconds, for an 800m split of 2:43.43. Ani Zotti a 91 seconds 400m split (45/46) on the final 400m of the 1200m leg of the DMR, for a personal best 1200m split of 4:13.43!!! Ani Zotti made a nice exchange to Captain Rachel Kittaka. Junior Rachel Kittaka ran the first 200m of the 1600m leg of the DMR in 35 seconds. Kittaka ran a 37 seconds split on the second 200m of the 1600m leg of the DMR for a 400m split of 72 seconds. Kittaka ran the second 400m split (43/45) in 88 seconds, for an 800m split of 2:40. Rachel Kittaka ran the third 400m split (48/44) in 91 seconds, for a 1200m split of 4:12. Rachel Kittaka ran the final 400m (46/40.20) in 86.20 seconds, a negative split, for a personal best mile time of 5:38.20!!! Rachel Kittaka, on her birthday, anchored the Mustangs to a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 13:28.21!! The Mustangs celebrated the new school records in the Mens and Womens Distance Medley Relays and Maria Torres outstanding performance in the Triple Jump on the bus with sparkling grape juice, and a dinner stop in Briadwood, Illinois at Antonia's fine Italian Cuisine (home of the largest Pizza Puffs in the world).
