News and Announcements

On Wednesday, May 16, 2007, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Associate Coach David Diaz, and Sprint Coach John Gallen attended the 2007 IHSA Sectional seed meeting at Loyola High School from 6 pm to 9 pm. The Northside coaching staff received a tour of the Track, and the Loyola Hall of Fame. The Loyola coaching staff treated the Northside coaching staff to a full course catered meal, and drinks, and were excellent hosts. The IHSA Officals for the Sectional meet were introduced, and it was also announced that Northside Jumps Coach Adrian Hunter, who was a member of several NCAA National Championships Teams at Arkansas, was selected over all the coaches in the Sectional as the official for Triple Jump for the IHSA Sectionals Championships. For the sprinting events, it was announced that coaches would not be allowed to hold blocks for their athletes, and that all blocks had to be held by other athletes during the meet, because no coaching can take place on the Track. For the distance events, it was announced that coaches would not be allowed to give their athletes splits. However, there will be an IHSA official giving splits to all athletes every 400 meters of the race. The IHSA standard rule of no jewelry, shirts tucked in, and matching uniforms for relays will also be in effect. No ipods, cell phones, cameras, or electronic devices will be permitted on the Track or at Field Events, and any use of the above would subject an athlete to an automatic disqualification. It was also announced that heat winners will not automatically advance to the finals in the 200m Dash. The 8 fastest times from all prelim heats will advance to the finals. Northside Geoff Edwards and Jose Choto were listed among the fastest times in their respective heats. The starting height for Pole Vault was set at 10'9. Although a Northside athlete has never attempted 10'9, the Mustangs are looking forward to the challenge. The starting height for High Jump was set at 5'7. Northside Sophomore Eric Nelson is ranked among the top high jumpers (6'2), and had an impressive practice on Wednesday, including throwing the Discus over 105'0, and the Shot Put at a school record distance (38'0). After practice Nelson also earned a 20-pull-ups t-shirt in the weight room. Although the Mustangs placed first and second in the second fastest heat of the 3200m run a year ago, the Mustangs were not expecting to be in the fast heat of the 3200m run or 800m run in the 2007 IHSA Sectionals. Northside Coaches were excited to learn on Wednesday evening, that Northside Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka made the fast heat in the 3200m (10:32) and that Northside Senior John Holler also made the fast heat in the 800m run (2:06). If either one, finishes in the top 2 in the Sectional, they would automatically qualify for the State Championships. It was also disclosed at the seed meeting that only one athlete (Robbins, Loyola) entered in the Mile has run the automatic qualifying time this season. This is a dramatic difference from a year ago. In fact, it is wide open for the second qualifying spot in the Mile, and based on the seed times there is 10 athletes who have the potential to do it, including Northside Captains Patrick O'Connor and Preston Buehrer, and Mather's Ivan Coronel. The Mustangs will leave for IHSA Sectionals on Friday, May 18, 2007, at 12:15 pm. The Northside Mustangs will be seeking to qualify as many athletes as possible for the 2007 State Championships, break as many school records as possible, and score as many points as possible. IHSA Sectional Medals will be awarded through sixth place.

LOYOLA ACADEMY 1100 LARAMIE WILMETTE, IL 60091 FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2007 EARLY DISMISSAL 12:00 PM - BUS LEAVES AT 12:10 PM In January 2007, Coach Gordon sent the entire Team a letter that stated, inter alia, that unlike other sports, he wouldn't cut anyone from the roster during the first three days of practice, and that it would be a five months try out to determine our Varsity IHSA Sectional Roster. As of May 7, 2007, only athletes that are on our IHSA Varsity Sectional roster will be permitted to be at practice. There will be a Cross Country Team meeting on Tuesday, May 29, 2007. Our Track & Field Banquet will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2007. If you didn't make the Varsity Sectional Roster, and can answer "Yes" to all of the following questions, then you can honestly say you did everything possible to make the Varsity Team this year. We are looking forward to having you on the Team next year. Did you attend every practice? If you missed an afternoon practice did you come to a morning practice on the same day? Where you on time for every practice? Did you attend every meet? Did you attend meets that you were listed as an alternate for an event? Did you skip practices for work? Did you skip practices for vacation? Did you run during the whole warm-up? Did you run during the whole cool down? Did you cut a distance run short? Did you go to the weight room after every practice? However, if you can't answer, "Yes" to all of the above questions, then you definitely need to train more consistently and work harder to make the Varsity squad next year. All of the meets we competed in this season have just been practice until now. The real SEASON starts TODAY. All of the Teams now have a record of 0-0, and any Team in the State can win the State Title. The experience of competing or even as an alternate during the IHSA State series will be priceless and one that you will remember for the rest of your lives. On Friday, May 18, 2007, we will travel to Loyola Academy for the IHSA State Sectionals!! The top two athletes in every event and relay qualify for the 2007 IHSA State Championships!! There is automatic qualifying times, distances, and heights as well. However, the purpose of the automatic qualifying standards is to allow for more than two athletes to qualify for the State Championships if the athlete?s performance is worthy of it. You do not have to hit a qualifying standard to go to the State meet. You only have to finish in the Top 2 to qualify for the State Championships!! Also, it is important to remember, that WE are also competing for the TEAM title as well. The top 6 places score in the meet, and individual IHSA Sectional Medals will be awarded as well as TEAM Trophies. The athletes listed on the following pages have been selected to represent Northside College Prep in the 2007 IHSA State Sectionals on Friday, May 18, 2007 at Loyola Academy. We need EVERYONE listed on the following pages to be at every practice, and come to the meet prepared mentally and physically to race their best. The athlete with the most CONFIDENCE and a strong belief in his own abilities is the one who will run, jump, or throw their best at the IHSA State Sectionals. Several times, I've seen athletes defeat themselves before the gun goes off, because they did not believe in themselves. 1964 Olympic Gold Medalist, Billy Mills said it best, "A winner says I can do it in advance. Follow your dreams." Alternates During the CPS Championship series, almost every alternate was used, and in several cases the alternates listed were not at the meet when the TEAM needed them because they wrongly thought they would not compete. The best alternates prepare as if their going to race. The alternates that have come through for the TEAM in the past, have been the athletes that prepare physically and mentally that their going to race. In the event that you do not get to race, the experience will still be priceless and alternates also get a trip to the State Championship if the relay qualifies. REMEMBER ONE THING. WE ARE GOING TO THE IHSA STATE SECTIONALS TO QUALIFY AS MANY ATHLETES AS POSSIBLE FOR THE 2007 IHSA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, BREAK AS MANY SCHOOL RECORDS AS POSSIBLE, AND SCORE AS MANY POINTS AS POSSIBLE. TO DO THIS, WE MUST HAVE A GREAT TEAM EFFORT WITH TOTAL CONCENTRATION ON RUNNING, JUMPING, AND THROWING AT OUR POTENTTIAL. THE TEAM THAT GOES IN WITH A REAL DESIRE, AN ATTITUDE OF MENTAL TOUGHNESS ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO, AN AGGRESSIVE APPROACH TO THE MEET AND A WILLINGNESS TO RUN WITH THEIR ABILITY AND CHALLENGE THEM SELF WILL WIN. The meet featured Hersey, Buffalo Grove, CICS, Northside College Prep, St. Scholastica, Von Steuben, Glenbrook South, Glenbrook North, Niles North, Wheeling, Regina Dominican, St. Viator, Amundsen, Mather, Senn, Sullivan, Evanston, Prospect, Palatine, Niles West, Loyola Academy, and New Trier. The Top two finishers in every event automatically qualify for the State Championships. In addition, athletes also qualify for the State Championships by hitting the automatic qualifying standard. In the Triple Jump, Maria Torres BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best jump of 35'2.5 to place fourth overall. Torres was within 0'3.5 of the automatic qualifying standard. In the 100m Dash, Kaitlin Renkosiak ran a personal best time of 14.40. Amy Perez also ran a personal best time of 14.50 In the 100m Hurdles, Captain Kelly Varney BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 18.40. In the 200m Dash, Junior Kelly Varney BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 27.80. In the 3200m run, Ani Zotti ran a personal best time of 12:36 (6:08/6:28). Carmen Abelson ran a personal best time of 12:55 (6:10/6:45). In the 4x800m Relay, the Mustangs BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD by 8 seconds!, with a time of 10:34. On the first leg of the 4x800m relay, Senior Mary Shelus ran a 2:34.00 800m split, and made a nice exchange to Julie Bujnowski. Senior Julie Bujnowski ran a 2:42.40 800m split on the second leg of the relay. Junior Rachel Kittaka ran a 2:43.60 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Sophomore Anna Parks passed Niles West, and anchored the relay to seventh place, with a 2:34.00 800m split, for a total time of 10:34. In the 4x100m Relay, Jennifer Kane, Amy Perez, Adaora Achufusi, and Natalie Hanigan combined for a time of 55.35. In the 800m run, Senior Mary Shelus BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a time of 2:30.70. Sophomore Anna Parks ran a time of 2:35.32. In the 4x200m Relay, Natalie Hanigan ran a 29.74 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Jennifer Kane ran a 30.17 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Adaora Achufusi ran a 29.65 200m split on the third leg of the Relay. Sophomore Maria Torres anchored the Mustangs with a 28.04 200m split, for a NEW SCHOOL RECORD of 1:55.60!!! In the 400m Dash, Freshman Bessie Nolan ran an outstanding time of 70.61. Freshman Karen Li won her heat with a time of 71.27. In the 300m Hurdles, Senior Amy Perez BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD in the final race of her high school career with a personal best time of 53.10. Maria Zdunek ran an outstanding time of 59.50. In the Mile, Palatine Sophomore Tory Wright (daughter of Kevin Wright (Coach Gordon's former High School Coach), dropped six seconds off her PR, and placed second overall with a personal best time of 5:13 to qualify for the State Championships! Kevin Wright retired from coaching when his daughter entered high school, so he could attend all of her meets, and be a part of her high school Track experience, and Friday night was a special night for the Wright family. Northside Captain Rachel Kittaka ran a pure guts race in the mile and went for it from the start. Kittaka's determination and mental toughness was outstanding. Kittaka went through 400m in 76 seconds (a 5:04 mile pace), and was at 2:45 through 800m (within 2 seconds of her 800m PR!), and was at 4:16 through 1200m. Kittaka struggled to maintain her running form in the final 400m, and her arms had a "swimming motion", causing her to lose speed, as she pushed to the finish with an outstanding time of 5:48 (2:45/3:03). Rachel Kittaka ran an awesome race, and her effort to qualify in the mile was second to none. Northside Sophomore Ani Zotti, had a slice of pizza prior to the Mile, and the extra carbohydrates surprisingly had a positive effect. Zotti went through 400m in 84 seconds, and was at 2:55 through 800m, and was at 4:27 through 1200m. Zotti ran the final 400m in 90 seconds for a personal best time of 5:57 (2:55/3:02). In the 4x400m Relay, a record, FIVE Schools qualified for the State Championships by running under the automatic qualifying time of 4:07.50. However, the Mustangs were unable to duplicate there performance at City Championships (4:16). Senior Mary Shelus ran a 64.67 400m split on the first leg of the relay. Senior Julie Bujnowski ran a 64.00 400m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Adaora Achufusi ran a 65.33 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Sophomore Anna Parks ran a 65.24 400m split to anchor the Mustangs to a time of 4:19.24. The 2007 Northside Womens Track & Field Team is the greatest Track Team in the history of Northside College Prep. They broke every school record in the book except for Long Jump, 3200m run, and the Sprint Medley Relay. They won the Presidents Day Invitational, UC-High Classic, and the Lane Tech Relays, had the highest finish in Northside History at City Championships on all levels, sent 5 athletes to the Indoor State Championships, and broke 7 schools records at the IHSA State Sectionals. The Team will be honored at a Team Banquet on Saturday, June 2, 2007, from 6 pm to 9 pm, complete with a Buffet Style Dinner.
On Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Buffalo Grove High School, all of the high school coaches gathered for a seed meeting to determine the final heats for the 2007 IHSA Sectional Championships. Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Glenbrook South Head Coach Fred Kocian, St. Viator Head Coach Brad Kaupinski, Hersey Head Coach Jim Miks, and the Niles North Head Coach were named to the games comittee to resolve all disputes that arise at the meet. The starting height for Pole Vault was announced as 7'3, and the starting height for High Jump was announced as 4'4. The Northside 4x400m Relay has become the biggest story going into IHSA Sectionals. A couple of weeks ago, they were ranked 16th in Chicago with a seed time of 4:35. They were an unknown, and nobody had them on their rader for the IHSA Sectional Championships. At the City Championship qualifying meet, the Mustangs 4x400m Relay moved up to fifth in Chicago with an outstanding time of 4:23. Three days later at the City Championships, the Mustangs dropped another seven seconds with the SAME athletes, and upset Lane Tech, to place second in Chicago with a school record time of 4:16.22. The Mustangs were the first team in the history of the CPS Championships to go from 16th to Second place in a span of two weeks. On Wednesday, May 9, 2007, it was announced that the Mustangs will be in the FAST HEAT at the IHSA Sectionals! The Mustangs will be seeking to qualify for the State Championships by placing in the top 2 or hitting the automatic state qualifying time of 4:07.5. The Mustangs have now had another full week of training, including impressive 200m repeats, and will be looking to smash the school record again, and qualify for the State Championships. On Saturday, May 5, 2007, the Northside Mens Track & Field Team traveled to Hanson Stadium in Chicago, Illinois for the Chicago Public School Track & Field Conference Championships. There are over 90 Chicago Public Schools, and over 2,700 Track & Field Athletes in the CPS Conference, making it the largest high school conference in the world. The conference is so large, that in order to have a conference championship meet, athletes must be ranked just to be invited to the qualifying meet. After the qualifying meet took place last Wednesday to determine the best 12 athletes in Chicago in the Distance events and Field events, and the best 8 athletes in Chicago in the sprinting events, the Northside Mustangs had qualified 12 athletes for the City Championships. A year ago, Mather's Maurice Fuller won the City Championships in High Jump with a jump of 6'0. The Northside College Prep school record (6'0) for High Jump was set in 2003 by Jelani Thompson. In 2007, five athletes were still remaining going into the first attempt at 6'2! The CPS announced over the stadium loud speaker the names of all five athletes remaining in the competition, and a large crowd gathered at the High Jump pit. Northside Captain Eric Nelson was one of the five remaining athletes in the competition, and Nelson was the only athlete with no misses through 6'0. On his first attempt at 6'2, Sophomore Eric Nelson BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best jump of 6'2!!! Whitney Young Senior Norman Thomas also cleared 6'2. The bar was then raised to 6'4, and Norman Thomas cleared it to win the competition. Eric Nelson was awarded a silver medal for placing second in the 2007 Varsity City Championships. Eric Nelson will be one of the favorites to qualify for the 2007 IHSA State Championships, at the Sectional meet. Last season, a jump of 5'11 qualified for State in the Mustangs sectional. In the Triple Jump, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon had Sophomore Eric Nelson pass on his remaining three jumps as a precautionary move after his spikes got caught on the runway on his last attempt at 6'4 in the High Jump. Nelson finished ninth in Triple Jump on the strength of his marks in the qualifying meet, which carried over to the finals. In the 4x800m Relay, Senior John Holler ran the first 400m in 59 seconds, and a 2:08.90 800m split (59/69.90) on the first leg of the relay and made a nice exchange to Captain Geoff Edwards. Senior Geoff Edwards is the mustangs best sprinter, and holds the school record in the 100m, 200m, and 400m dash, and in effort to help his teammates, he ran the second leg of the 4x800m Relay in the City Championships. Geoff Edwards came through for the Mustangs, and ran a 63.10 for the first 400m, and a personal best 2:22.99 800m split (63.10/79.89) to put the Mustangs in fifth place, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Simon Vecchioni. Vecchioni had been sick since Thursday, and with alternates Patrick O'Connor, and Brian Chhun not showing up to the meet, and Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda recovering from a skate board injury, Vecchioni, a 2:16 800m runner, was willing to attempt to run for his teammates. Vecchioni ran a 68.11 for the first 400m, and a 2:27.11 800m split (68.11/79.00), but the short recovery time from his illness caught up to him in the final 150m, and four teams passed him. Junior Santino Merino anchored the Mustangs to ninth place with a 66.00 for the first 400m, and a 2:26 800m split (66/80), for a total time of 9:25. In the 3200m run, Mather's Carlos Hernandez edged Whitney Young's Ethan Heppner to win it. Northside's Jonathan Kittaka placed eighth overall with an outstanding time of 10:44 (5:11/5:33). Jonathan Kittaka was awarded a Medal for placing eighth in the 2007 Varsity City Championships. Northside Captain Preston Buehrer showed great mental toughness racing with a taped up foot, and placed 10th overall with a time of 11:00 (5:19/5:41). In the 800m run, John Holler dropped six seconds from the qualifying round, with an outstanding time of 2:10.11 (61/69.11) In the 1600m run, Northside Sophomore Jonathan Kittaka placed seventh overall with a time of 4:57 (69/2:26/3:44/4:57). Junior Preston Buehrer ran a time of 5:13 (70/2:28/3:54/5:13). On Monday, May 7, 2007, the entire Northside Track & Field Team will have a Team Meeting at 3:39 PM to announce the roster for the IHSA Sectional Championships and distribute banquet information.
