It's the Primo's Run for Education - MV Runners, Parents Run Hard!

Posted by Mike Davis at Oct 8, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The 2005 edition of the Primo's Run for Education featured a number of MV runners - both current team members and parents.   Coming the day after Castro Valley and Clovis, this was a non mandatory team event.  That didn't stop a number of runners from tackling the 5K, and even the 1/2 Marathon.

Starting at 7:30 from downtown Danville - you guessed it, in front of Primo's - Nick Williams, Donnie McCormick and John O'Rourke laced up the shoes for an attempt at the grueling 13.1 mile distance.  Donnie was the group's veteran, having run the event in 2004.  A clear, cool morning greeted the runners, which no doubt helped the early miles pass by.  When it was all over, all three finished the distance in remarkable fashion.  John and Donnie handily broke the 2 hour barrier, with John taking 184th out of 450 finishers, and Donnie grabbing 115th place in 1:43.   Nick Williams caused quite a stir as a newcomer, finishing a remarkable 14th overall, in 1 hour, 23 minutes.  That's a remarkable 6:21 / mile pace for 13.1 miles!  Wow.  Congrats to all three long-haul-harriers!
************************************************************************************
In the 5K, a large number of MV runners and parents lined up.  Current team members showed off their fitness level for the home crowd, with a number of top age group performances.  Jason Kanar finished 18th overall in 18:31, followed closely by Daniela Gergley (2nd female finisher!) in a PR time of 18:58.  Cameron Tremblay Adams was next - also grabbing a prized "top 50" t-shirt by finishing in 39th.  Chris Gergley was next, breaking into the top 100 in 78th place (and also breaking 7 min / mile pace for the 3.1 mile run). Trevor Cooper, Jasmina Xie, Monique Park and Izzy Askanas rounded out the runners, all finishing in the top 300 out of 2400 participants.  A solid job and a great community cause.

And yes, Coach Davis laced up his racing flats and took to the road, shouting out running quotes to anybody who would listen.  After reminding himself to keep his arms loose, and up, and "get that next runner"... Coach finished in 18:26 - good for 17th place.  AND.... our team Mom - Lisa Gergley - came in 1st for her age group, taking home a medal!  She finished an impressive 96th overall!  Not to be outdone, Dean Williams, our team liason to the Athletic Boosters, earned a top 50 shirt by being the 47th male to cross the line!   "Don't mess with our parents" might be the new rally cry.

Many other families participated.  Congratulations to all of you.

Castro Valley Invite - UPDATED NOV 9TH - RESULTS!

Posted by Mike Davis at Oct 8, 2005 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The bulk of the team met at Monte Vista for the short trip into Castro Valley, where the famous CV Invitational course awaited them.  Driving to the middle school at the top of that huge hill, must have caused any new runners to be concerned about the course.  However, as is usually the case, the course did not have the tough hills like Oak Hill Park.  The coaches did hear complaints about the soccer field that wouldn't end!

There were several outstanding performances turned in, and many, many solid efforts.  Unfortunately, the CV Invite mails the results to us, when they are good and ready... so it may be some time before we have all your times.

Clovis - Eye Patches, Chilis, Piccadilly Inn.... and great racing!

(full results by linking above)

The Varsity teams made the 3 hour drive to Fresno, where they competed in the Clovis Invitational on Saturday, Oct 9th.  110 teams, and over 2,000 runners participated in this classic meet, which is considered a tune-up for the CIF XC State Meet held on the same course, in late November.

Led by Chris Simpson's 6th place overall finish, and Clinton McAdam's 21st place, the varsity boys finished 11th out of 36 teams that toed the starting line.  Patrick Gandolfo was 3rd for the Stangs, while Soph sensation Danny Bartz continues to improve, coming in 4th.  Keith Romosor just held off Alex Anderson and Bhavik Kanzaria for the 5th spot.  Overall, the team ran a full minute faster than the 2004 squad did.

On the girls side, Daniela Gergley continued her streak of medal placing performances, finishing 18th overall in the Large School varsity race.  This helped the squad take 19th out of 37 teams that fielded runners.  Running her best race of the season, Senior Jamie Callahan came in second in a solid time of 22:46 for the 5K course. Renee Lau was only 4 places behind Jamie, in the 3rd place.  Juniors Katie Rabago and Claire Hoppens rounded out the scoring, with Lauren Ho and Tia Pressler close behind.

Varsity alternates Kristen Hines and Luke Hatton did not get to sit back and relax.  They also ran the full 3.1 mile course, in the JV races, as solo runners.  The  MV team spread out and cheered for both of them, helping fuel solid performances.  Kristen was in the top 100, finishing 91st, while Luke ran a solid race, breaking 19 minutes and taking 47th overall.

But... Clovis is not just about the running, as the team enjoyed the now traditional events like: hip/hop dancing in the coaches car, "the" Chili's in Fresno, the Piccadilly Inn, and the In-N-Out burger madness after the race.  Certainly a great time was had by the entire squad that made the trip.

Special thanks to Wendy McAdams and Christine Simpson for helping to drive the team down.  And Coach Davis' wife Karla for the goodie bags (with the eye patches)!

Clovis 2006?  Who will make the trip?
