Ann Arbor -- Ann Arbor Pioneer beat Bloomfield Hills Marian 3-0 to win its third-straight Michigan High School Field Hockey Association State Championship Nov. 3 at Pioneer. It was Pioneer's 19th field hockey title in their history.
Katie Martin scored Pioneer's first goal on an assist from Jenna Robinson at the 24:53 mark of the first half. Betsy Haller put the game out of reach, scoring two goals in the game's final six minutes.
"It's a real tribute to our team; they worked hard since August," Pioneer head coach Jane Dixon told the Detroit Free Press. "We had phenomenal senior leadership, and everybody else played their role and did what they needed to do."
Haley Jones was stellar in goal, stopping 11 shots. It was her third shutout of the tournament.
"In the season, I think she was only scored on four times; she does all the feature stuff," Dixon said. "She's also strong in character and everybody rallies around Haley."
Pioneer finished their season with a record of 14-0-3. Marian ended a fine season at 12-2-4.
The two teams tied twice during the regular season. The Mustangs tied the Pioneers 1-1 at Marian on Sept. 17 and fought to a 1-1 tie at Pioneer on Oct. 19.
The Pioneer roster includes: Allison Brock, Claire Ziegeler, Sarah Drake, Emily McEvoy, Margie McNair, Katelynn Spaid, Hillary Zdanowski, Isabel Wanty, Janna Robinson, Kelsey Thompson, Isabel Ringo-Kasotakis, Allie Stein, Besty Haller, Janelle Greene, Jayne Pickard, Molly Stansik, Katie Knoedler, Jane Petoskey, Caitlin Davies, Zane Almquist, Katie Martin, and Haley Jones. Tristan Diver is the co-coach.
