To our softball community...
No one has been more disturbed about the final score of our Franklin game than I. Those of you that were there know that everything was done, short of making a mockery of the game, to end it.
Runners were going 60 feet at a time, Umpires were told to make the strike zone as big as they wanted. They were told our runners would be aggressive in their leads and to call it like they saw it, yet the game was permitted to get where it did. I, along with the Franklin coach, was unaware how bad it actually was until it was finally over.
Things that were done by the Falcon team:
After the first 7 runs were scored, our team stopped all aggressive moves on offense. This included stealing bases, tagging up, bunting, hit and running, advancing on pass balls and wild pitches, stretching singles into doubles and doubles into triples. All substitutions were made in the first inning. All cheering and celebrating was stopped early in the first. We did everything short of disrespecting the game to "shut down".
Suggestions (after the fact) of what else might have been done:
Why didn't you bunt?
A bunt is looked at as an aggressive play. The defense still needs to do three things right and if this is not done then we look like we are "running up the score". Compare this to a football game in which one team is blowing out the other and you pass the ball to throw an "intentional" interception. The opposing team drops the ball now how do you look passing the ball when up by 60 points?
Why just not swing or strikeout intentionally?
Again using football - you're up 60 to nothing, you get the ball on offense, do you take a knee three times and then punt? NO! That shows no respect for your opponent.
Why not end the game after you're up 25 runs?
We would have liked to! WIAA rules require you play 5 to be an official game. Asking to end it any earlier would be asking them to forfeit. I was 15 feet away from Coach Davis most of the game. Had she wanted to end it she would have had my support. Her players never indicated they wanted to stop playing and she never stop coaching.
The game was played with respect towards the other team. The only time a Franklin player seemed upset was when in the fourth inning, three consecutive Falcon runners were called out for leaving early. It was at this point the Franklin catcher was heard to say "Hey he's (the umpire) doing that on purpose". Before that, the Franklin spirits were high.
As the Franklin team was leaving ,their starting pitcher stopped to say, "Hey Falcons you're awesome, good game, good luck" All players and Coaches showed respect for one another.
In our team meeting after the game I informed the players that the score and stats would not be reported.
What was put on our web site was a game recap that has been done for every game we’ve played. This, in retrospect should not have gone there and has since been removed.
There have been several other very unbalanced games this year in our league. At what point is it just too much? Twenty, thirty, forty runs? If this game does anything positive it will point out the inequities in our league, rules that need to be changed and the role Umpires can take in such an unbalanced game.
The Falcons respect every team we play. We teach that. To disrespect your opponent is to disrespect yourself and the game. This was not a victory we celebrated.
Sincerely,
Jim Weir

Falcons cause a "Hitquake"
But I will say the WIAA needs to implement a new mercy rule. This did not need to go 5 innings to be official and both teams would have liked to have ended this long before it did, I am sure( 2 1/2 hours later ) I don't think the scorekeeper would have minded either!
My hat also goes off to the Franklin squad for never giving up in what was a very long no win situation.
2007 Field Day was a HUGE success!
We would like to say THANK YOU! to Ed Thiemann – Cam Varney – Mark Hatlen – Jana Lottinville – Tim Harris – Steve Stivala and Natalie Pierre for the most successful field day in years at WHS. The hillside was weed wacked, all of the concrete and asphalt was power washed along with the dugouts, field edges and foul lines. All of the signs were washed and rehung. All of the cutouts were rototilled about 5 “ deep. This will make a HUGE difference when it comes to sliding. Your support of this fabulous team is very much appreciated. The coaches, players and fans Thank You!!
Woodinville Falcons shut out Bothell 2-0
Well this "inside reporter" told you not to miss this one and if you did, your loss! The Falcons hosted their cross town rivals Bothell Cougers in what had to be the best show in town! The Falcons looked like they might take a quick 2 nothing lead in their half of the first when Devan McComb tripled and Lauren Hamilton went deep down the left field line.......just foul. The game remained scoreless thru four innings when it looked like the cougars would strike first. Bothell's Mary Watson dropped a sinking line drive down the right field line that right fielder Ashley Tuiasosopo made a diving stab for. She slowed it down just enough for a hustling Maggie Wagner (2nd baseman) to run down. With Watson trying to stretch the double into a three bagger, Maggie gunned her down from shallow right field with a perfect throw to Lindsay Sullivan waiting at third. Rally was dead before it got started!
In the bottom of the 5th the Falcons started their own fireworks. Team Captain Ashley started things with a line drive to right center. This brought Cacia Pierre to the plate who preceded to lay down the perfect Sac Bunt moving Tui to 2nd. Then Lindsay Sullivan ripped a 1-2 pitch to center, really "too hard" to where Tui had to hold at third. With runners at 1st & 3rd and Zoe Thiemann coming to the plate the situation was begging for some Falcon magic, and with the count 0-1 to Zoe, it happened! The deadly squeeze bunt was so perfect it not only scored Tui but was a base hit . Falcons 1 Cougars 0.
But the fireworks weren't done, With Sullivan now sitting on third and Zoe stealing second on the first pitch, Jamie Stivala crushed a linedrive to right which cougs right fielder, Ashley Thomas, made a nice catch to keep Sullivan at third. Then came Maggie Wagner to the plate who's adrenalin had to still be pump'n from the defensive play in the top half of the inning. She ripped the first pitch for a base hit to score Lindsay. Falcons 2 Cougs 0.
In the bottom half of 6 the Falcons threatened again when SS Tobey Varney, who was tough at the plate all night, ripped a single and stole second, but that was the end as a strike out and a pop up would end the rally. The 2 runs would prove to be all Devan McComb would need to secure the win in the circle. She was absolutely awesome giving up only 3 hits and striking out 11 and showed great composure under the lights at Falcon field.
They may be young, but this reporter likes what's happening out there. The 2-0 Falcons next meet up with the Eastlake Wolves this coming Monday @ 4pm at Eastlake, another young athletic team. Could be another "Blockbuster"
DON'T MISS THIS ONE! GO FALCONS!!
