UPCOMING SEASON OFFERS MANY CHALLENGES
BY THE GURU

With the 2006 season right around the corner, the Spotswood Chargers have completed scheduling their scrimmages and regular season opponents.  One thing cannot be denied. . . . .the schedule is loaded with great games and some new features not seen before from Chargers past.

The scrimmage schedule has a new feel to it.  The Chargers have added Group 4 champion Randolph, Hopatcong, Pingry and Jackson from the Shore Conference.  The better early season competition should pay dividends later, for SHS will see some fierce competition after April 1.

Included on this year's slate are games versus some of the state's most formidable teams.

The annual Post 25 Commander's Cup game vs. Red Division and GMC Champion East Brunswick will take place at Waterfront Park, Home of the Trenton Thunder.  That game will be on Sunday, April 30th, with the time TBA.

New additions also include Old Bridge, North Hunderton, New Brunswick, and a trip to Toms River to square off with a New Jersey state power: the Toms River South Indians.  This game will be played at TRSHS at 7pm as the feature game of a triple-header in the 2006 Shore Challenge.  The first two games pit state powers Bergen Catholic and St. Rose, followed by Ramapo vs. Manasquan.  The Chargers will take on the Indians to cap off a great day of baseball.

This season offers quite a bit of firsts for the Chargers.  It will be the first time they will make the trip to Trenton in the Commander's Cup game.  The first time SHS will play any of the Toms River schools, and the first time they will compete in the Shore Challenge.   The North Hunderton game will be held under the lights at HealthQuest Park, on the turf in Flemington, NJ.  First Pitch is 7pm out in Hunderton County.

However, the more things change, the more they stay the same as the Chargers have a few things that will have a familiar look to them.  The Charger seniors will attempt to become the first group to go through their 4 years at SHS and finish the season as Blue Division Champs.  As a matter of fact, the GMC has not seen a Blue Division Champion other than Spotswood or Kennedy since the 1998 season.

The JFK Stangs were the champs in 1999, 2000, 2001, and Spotswood has had a hold on the title since JFK left for the White Division in 2002, 2003, and held on when Kennedy came back in 2004.

This year, the Blue Division seems primed with solid pitching from top to bottom.  With the out of conference schedule the way it is,  the schedule seems nothing short of challenging.  With some familiar foes awaiting, and some new rivals on the horizon, another year of Charger Baseball is almost here.  Hope to see you at "The Swamp"!!
