Highlanders Stun Spring Valley

Fresh off their notification of being the #1 ranked team in the pre-season coaches poll, the ladies looked nothing of the part early in the game. Uncharacteristically, the defense committed five errors in the first three innings spotting the Timberwolves to a quick 5-0 lead. Things quickly changed in the bottom of the fourth. Schauna Thacker singled to start it off followed by an RBI single by Taylor Curtis to drive Thacker in with no outs. Then the unexpected happened. Kayla Stinson followed with a two run blast over the left field fence to make it 5-3. Neither team scored in the fifth and again fireworks erupted in the sixth. With one out Stinson hit her second home run of the game followed by a walk to Spurlock and Thea Cooper promptly singled sharply up the middle to tie it a 5. The Wolves could not muster a threat in the top half of the seventh and that set the stage for the dramatic win. Katie Britt lashed a single to center to get it started and with two outs Curtis drove Britt in with the game winning hit over second.Stinson stuck out 13 in the victory which runs the team record to 3-0. Being ranked # 1 just provides a big bullseye on their back for all the teams they face. The girls learned a valuable lesson tonight. Be ready to play every game and never give up. I think both will be lessons well remembered!

Lady Highlanders Hilltop Champs

Posted by ROD MICHALLAS at Mar 19, 2006 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
The 2006 squad started the season off with two mercy wins to take the championship of its second annual Hilltop Hitfest. Five teams participated in the event. Our first win was a 11-1 victory over conference foe Greenbrier East. Brittney Napier homered and Kayla Stinson had 2 doubles. Sam Spurlock, Thea Cooper and Katie Britt each had two hits as well. Stinson also had a good showing on the mound allowing 2 hits and walking none.
In the nightcap, starting pitcher Tressa Riley and reliever Chelsae Holley combined for a four hit shutout over the Poca Dots for the championship. The Highlanders pounded out 12 hits to end the contest in a 10-0 win. Spurlock and Napier each had multiple hit games.
