News and Announcements

Unfortunately living in such a high density location as Southern California there is a definite risk of getting hit by a car when you are out training. It is important to take several precautions and follow these crtical steps if you are involved in an accident.

Here is a list of suggested things to do from Joe Higuera, a Multisports Orange County member and Personal Injury Lawyer.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU GET IN AN ACCIDENT:

1) Check your current insurance coverage. On your automobile insurance policy, increase your uninsured motorist limits to $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident. You will be shocked by how little it costs to increase your policy to the maximum amount that may be purchased. You may be shocked at how little coverage you have when you call your agent and ask them, "what are my uninsured motorist limits?"

Most people have a $15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident uninsured motorist policy. If you are struck by an automoble while riding your bike, your automobile insurance policy covers you up to your uninusred motorist limits if that driver is uninsured or under-insured. Yes, that is correct, you are covered when riding your bike, as the uninsured motorist policy typically reads "coverage up to the applicable limits for an incident arising out of the operation of a motor vehicle."  If you have $250,000 in coverage, you will receive that amount, assuming your case is valued at or above that amount. If you do not have that coverage, you will only receive the policy limits of the person that hit you, which can be as little as the state minimum required $15,000! This assumes the person has little or no assets that you would be able to collect after obtaining a costly judgment. You may also receive the amount of your uninsured motorist policy; however, if it is only $15,000 like many policies, that is all you will receive. You insurance company is also entitled to a credit for the payment of the underlying policy, rendering your uninsured motorist policy useless UNLESS it exceeds the amount of the underlying policy for the driver that hit you.

Many drivers have only the state minimum required $15,000 bodily injury liability policy. If you are seriously injured, you are at serious risk of only being able to obtain $15,000 in compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering and loss of earnings, combined! There is a very high probability that you could be hit by someone with a small policy, as most people do not have assets to protect and buy the cheapest available policy.  You can protect yourself by increasing your uninsured motorist limits on your own policy to $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident. I am insured with State Farm, who I believe is the best auto insurance carrier. I would be happy to provide the contact information for my insurance agent upon request.

2) Wear identification with emergency contact info and any special needs or alergies. Road ID (www.roadID.com) has an interactive one that can be updated online if you move or your emergency contact info changes. A quick and dirty option is to photo copy your drivers licence and write the name of 2-3 ememrgency contacts and phone numbers on the back and keep it in your seat pack.

3) Always ride with at least one friend, if possible. They are your potential witness and the person that will make sure the driver does not flee the scene without being identified. Discuss with your riding partner before your ride what to do if one of you is hit.

THINGS TO DO IF YOU GET IN AN ACCIDENT:

1) Always carry a cell phone in case of emergency.

2) Immediately call 911 and provide your location the moment you can, and indicate it is an injury accident. If you can not call, ask anyone you can to call 911 and provide your location immediately. Do not let anyone talk you out of making this call.

3) Immediately obtain the license plate number of the vehicle that struck you if possible, or ask a fellow rider or witness (if any) to obtain the license plate number immediately, even if you have to yell it out.   Be prepared for the vehicle to flee the scene. It is essential that you identify the vehicle if this happens. Also make a mental note of the make, model and color of the vehicle, as well as a physical description of the driver if you can see them.

 4) Try to take photos of the scene including skid marks, damage to vehicles or other property. The licence plate and face of the person in the other vehicle. If you are with someone how is struck by a car it would be very helpful to your friend if you do this. Most cell phones now have a camera on them

5) When the police arrive, INSIST that a police report be taken. This is very important, as the police will take statements from witnesses and the culpable party before they leave the scene and have the opportunity to reflect and change their story later.

6) If possible, ask any witnesss, such as anyone who stops at the scene, to provide you with their contact information, such as a business card, name, address and telephone number. iPhones have a recorder feature on them so you can get the info without having to write anything down. If your attorney is unable to contact them or find them later on, it could make all the difference in proving the motorist was at fault for the accident. Also provide your name and contact information to them, and ask them to call you later. This is an added precaution in case you are unable to reach them later on.

7) DO NOT give a statement to any insurance company representative if you are contacted at the scene by one, which is unlikely, but possible. You will almost certaintly be contacted by an insurance company rep after the accident. Do NOT provide a recorded statement of any kind. You are NOT required to provide one, and they are attempting to collect as much information as possible, hoping you will "slip up" and say something that may hurt your case. Do NOT sign anything, such as an authorization or release that comes in the mail from any insurance company, without consulting with an attorney FIRST.

COACH STEVEN OWEN BIO

Posted by Michael Collins at Nov 25, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Steven Owen is the Running Program Director for Multisports Orange County. He has been competing in and winning age group division triathlons and road races over the past decade.Steven is also an associate with Runners High a specialty run store in Irvine. He is a POSE Method running coach for South Orange County, California. At the Store Steven helps members of the running community by fitting them in the proper running shoes. "As I analyze runners and put them in the proper shoe, I see a real need to explain the rudimentary approach to good posture and running mechanics. The Pose method of running helps me explain the necessity of paying attention to your body mechanics in every day running and walking." At the store Steven offers a video tape analysis of the runners gait to help fit them in the proper shoe. "Viewing the tape both in real time and frame by frame makes it much easier to show the customer their specific biomechanical needs. At the same time this analysis gives us the opportunity to suggest ways in which the customer might improve their pose in running." Steven also sets the training program and schedule for our running groups including all trail running opportunities, races, and more. If you would like to read more about Steven or POSE running please use the following web link:Posetech.com

Steven has been a part of the running community since the 1990’s and more recently a part of the triathlon world. When he started training as a triathlete he had no idea that his training and racing would advance to such a high level. Prior to his experience at Fleet Feet Laguna Niguel he was a casual, 25 mile a week fitness runner. Since that time, he has literally leaped into the world of triathlon training and racing head first. An age group winner, he has worked his way up the ladder including a trip to Australia and the ITU Worlds Sprint Distance Championships this year. In conjunction with his triathlon training he also enters many of the local road races andMultisportsOC team events. "I found that as I increased my time in training I would have to train smarter to avoid injury. The Pose method of running has not only kept me running, but also brought my race times down substantially."

As an associate at Runners High, a run specialty store, Steven helps members of the running and tri community by fitting them in the proper running shoes and attire. "As I analysis runners and put them in the proper shoe, I see a real need to explain the rudimentary approach to good posture and running mechanics. The POSE method of running helps me explain the necessity of paying attention to your body mechanics in every day running and walking."
