BROUGHTY ATHLETIC v MONTROSE ROSELEA

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT MAY 16TH 2015

With most Montrose football attention firmly fixed on Links Park Montrose, Roselea travelled to Whitton Park to face a Broughty side on a good run of form having won their last five matches and with intentions of making the play off spot.

Roselea were without the suspended Calum Watson, the injured Scott McDowell, Michael Cruickshank was working and Kyle Findlater was on holiday. James Collier failed a pre match fitness test although he took a place on the bench and Liam Bailey returned as a trialist.

After a nice morning a terrible gale got up and although the rain threatened it did not come to anything as the game progressed.

Roselea: Mcleod, Reoch, R Taylor, Thomson, Whyte, Mitchell, Anderson, Rae, Reid, Campbell & Greig. Subs: Smith, Bailey, Collier, Brand & Kerrigan.

After a bright home side opening spell it was Roselea who had the first shot on goal when Campbell drifted past his marker before cutting inside and hitting a low right footer which Ross held easily in 8 minutes.

In 10 minutes a long Broughty clearance almost caught Roselea napping at the back but Mcleod was quick to gather from Sibanda who had threatened to break clear.

With 12 minutes gone Jamie Winter unleashed his first pile driver of the day picking up a loose ball and the wind pushed the ball onto the outside of the post as it flashed behind.

The Fed took the lead in 15 minutes. A long throw was assisted with the wind and despite winning the challenge the ball fell nicely to LUNAN with four Roselea players in close attendance unable to anything and the defender poked the ball into the corner of the net.

Roselea had a great chance to level in 20 minutes when a flick on sent Greig clear on the right and although his chipped effort was a perfect height to beat Ross it was agonisingly wide of the post. Roselea were coming more into things and a couple of minutes later a well worked move involving Rae, Reid and Mitchell saw the latter send the low cross into the front post and Greig just failed to make the correct connection.

Both sides created some half chances but most were shots from outside the box which were not hit with any venom then right on half time Craig Anderson bucked that trend when he hit a great shot from 25 yards which whistled past the post.

Half Time: Broughty Athletic 1 Montrose Roselea 0

The second half started in controversial circumstances in the opening minute when Broughty were awarded a very baffling penalty kick. Mcleod palmed a cross away from the body of Duell and there was no contact between the players but the referee pointed to the spot. After booking Mcleod for his protest Bryan DUELL slotted the penalty into the net confidently.

In 51 minutes quick thinking from Anderson set Mitchell down the wing with a quickly taken free kick and his cross was narrowly missed by the onrushing Greig.

Winter broke to the other end and just as he was about to shoot a great tackle from Whyte prevented a shot on goal.

The game was far from dirty and several yellow cards were produced for niggly fouls after the ball had gone. Ryan Taylor became the games 6th booking in the 68th minute and McLellan took the free kick which Mcleod had to smother at the feet of the incoming forwards.

In 72 minutes Roselea replaced one Liam with another as Bailey replaced Campbell.

In 74 minutes Reid picked up a pass from Anderson just inside the Broughty half and took off on a run drifting past two defenders before being felled on the edge of the area. Mylles was booked and Ryan Taylors low shot was on target but did not have enough punch to trouble Ross.

Roselea made a second change with Morgan Smith going on for Steven Greig in 83 minutes.

Broughty had the last two chances of the game with a great reverse pass setting up Timmons but Mcleod made a great save with his leg. Right on time Jamie Clarke should have done better when his downward header at the far post should have at least been on target with Mcleod stranded.

Full Time: Broughty Athletic 2 Montrose Roselea 0

This win keeps Broughty in the hunt for the play off place with St Andrews securing promotion. Roselea remain in 9th place and with Bathgate losing, Roselea are now assured as expected to remain in the Premier League for season 2015-16. Lochee Utd have been relegated from the Superleague and will be also be in the Premier League next season.

There was no doubting that Broughty overall deserved to win the match but the soft penalty award so early into the second half made their passage easier. There were some outstanding displays in the Roselea side but they did lack a cutting edge to trouble the confident Fed side.

Roselea await to play Edinburgh Utd away in their last game but with the Lothian side having five games to play there is no guessing when this will be played. It will not be Saturday 23rd May as Roselea have been allocated a free week.

DOWN IN THE DUMPS AT WAROUT

GLENROTHES v MONTROSE ROSELEA
MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE
SAT MAY 9TH 2015

Roselea travel to the Warout Stadium to face Glenrothes in the first of three away games to finish the season. The home side are in deep relegation troubles although a welcome midweek win over Edinburgh Utd hoisted them out of the bottom three. With Forfar West End a point behind with 5 games in the hand, Glenrothes had to win their last two games to have any chance. The Warout Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for Roselea over the years with their last victory bring in 2006.

Roselea are without the suspended Calum Watson who will miss the next two games having reached the 18 pt threshold and a couple of other players are carrying knocks.Roselea were without Calum Watson who had reached the 18pt booking limit and would miss two games.Kyle Findlater also sat out through injury. Craig Taylor slotted in at right back as a Trialist.

Roselea: Mcleod, C Taylor, R Taylor,Reoch, Whyte, Rae, Anderson, Smith, Cruickshank, Collier & Greig. Subs: Campbell, Reid, Thomson, Mitchell & Tringham.

Glenrothes opened the brighter of the two teams and in the opening 5 minutes Napier hit the side netting then sclaffed a great opportunity to open the scoring from a cut back.

Greig should have opened Roselea’s account in 15 minutes when a long ball caught out the Glenrothes rearguard and his lobbed effort went over the keeper but also just over the bar as well.

Calum Rae cut inside and hit a decent low shot from 25 yards but home keeper Gay held well.

Roselea were under pressure 5 minutes later and Anderson did well to track back and clear a Martin cutback out for a corner then Ryan Taylor headed clear just missing the upright. From the next corner Anderson flicked on the ball and it struck the near post giving Roselea a real scare.

Both teams were trying to get their noses in front and Collier did well to hold the ball up from a corner but his shot was blocked then Forbes went close for Glenrothes shotting just over in the final minute of the half.

Half Time: Glenrothes 0 Montrose Roselea 0

Glenrothes looked more likely to score and Napier headed into the side netting from a header. They did open the scoring in the 54th minute with the main threat John MARTIN scoring. He was allowed far too much room and his final shot took a big deflection to loop over Mcleod and into the net.

Martin should have made it two nil 62 minutes when again he was provided with far too much room and somehow managed to shoot wildly over the bar when he had gobe round Mcleod with an open goal provided to him.

Roselea were the creators of their own downfall and when Mcleod raced out to clear he only found Napier who again had an open goal and somehow managed to strike the ball of the post.

Roselea made two changes with Tringham & Reid replacing Collier & Smith.

Craig Taylor almost caught out Gay in the Glenrothes goal when his deep cross dipped just over the bar with the keeper scarmbling.

The referee was making some very questionable decisions and in 68 minutes he virtually ended Roselea’s day with a very harsh red card for Paul Whyte who was adjudged to be last man when he brought down Martin in a wide position. The referee also seemed to ignore the fact that Martin pushed his head into Whyte as he left the field.

Roselea were down but not out and Tringham had a bullet header turned round the post in 72 minutes. That was to be Roselea’s turning point as a minute later Reid was felled in the box for a sure fire penalty which was not given then as the ball was sent to the other end Mcleod was rash and brought down Forbes for a penalty. After some deliberation about where the ball should be on the spot FORBES composed himself and struck a firm penalty home.

Roselea needed to get something back but the clock was against them. As they pushed forward there was always going to be gaps with three men at the back and long ball to GRIFFIN caught Mcleod in no mans land allowing the player to the roll the ball into the empty net in 81 minutes.

Reid almost got one back for Roselea in 84 minutes when he latched onto a Tringham flick on but Gay in the home goal reacted quickly and came out to smother.

Glenrothes could have scored more goals than their three and Forbes was King sinner with a terrible miss from 5 yards out with an open goal staring him in the face.

Full Time: Glenrothes 3 Montrose Roselea 0

After a very balanced first half it was far too easy for Glenrothes in the second half. Aided by some very poor refereeing decisions the home side were far hungrier than a very flat Roselea in the second half. The sending off was very harsh and on three occasions the striker Martin had squared up to Roselea players without being cautioned. That said the home side deserved their victory which could have been by a wider margin.

It is looking more likely that Roselea will remain in the Premier League although it is not mathematically secure yet. They dropped another place to 9th in the League. With two teams unable to match Roselea’s points tally of 39 and another three sides only able to surpass that by two it would be highly unlikely that they will go down.

Roselea have two games remaining, both away from home starting with Broughty Athletic at Whitton Park on Sat May 16th KO 2.30pm and then at Edinburgh Utd on a date to be advised. The Edinburgh side have 6 games remaining so it could take a few weeks for the season to finish.

Roselea are without the suspended Calum Watson who will miss the next two games having reached the 18 pt threshold and a couple of other players are carrying knocks.

VIOLET STEAL THE "SPOILS"

Posted by Roy Gill at May 1, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA V DUNDEE VIOLET

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT MAY 2ND 2015

Roselea entertained Violet in their final home game of the 2014-15 season. With both teams almost assured their place in next seasons Premier League it could have taken and end of season feel to it. Roselea beat Violet 3-2 in Dundee to avenge a penalty shoot out defeat at home in the GA Cup so a tight match was in prospect.

Calum Watson was available but would start a two game suspension after the match due to racking up bookings and Ralph Brand & Steve Kerrigan had almost a full squad to pick from minus the long term injured Scott McDowell. Jo Reoch returned to the bench after missing out at Tayport due to a bug. Steven Greig dropped to the bench with Dale Reid replacing him and Morgan Smith started for Craig Anderson who had picked up a strain.

Despite some rain in the last week Broomfield Park was rock solid and was fiery but the Groundstaff had at least made it look like a pitch.

Roselea: Mcleod, Findlater, R Taylor, Thomson, Whyte, Rae, Collier, Smith, Cruickshank, Reid & Watson. Subs: Mitchell, Greig, Campbell, Tringham

Violet started the stronger of the two teams and McConnachie sent in a dangerous corner in 4 minutes which Mcleod missed but he was fouled and Smith cleared off the line in any case.

Violet went close in 8 minutes and McConnachie broke up the left but Mcleod was up to the task and turned his shot away for a corner.

In 10 minutes Rae went close for Roselea with a volley from range which went just wide then Watson had a good chance when the ball bounced in the box but he snatched his shot high and wide.

Roselea were coming into things and a good move in 19 minutes saw the next chance of the game fall to James Collier. A good move up the left saw Taylor send the ball to Watson who headed the ball inside to Collier and although the ball was sitting nicely he was off balance and screwed his effort wide.

Morgan Smith also had a shot from 25 yards which again did not find the target.

In 33 minutes Roselea almost took the lead with a fortuitous effort from Kyle Findlater. He threw in a cross from midway inside the Violet half and the ball struck the corner of the post and bar before going behind.

Roselea had a warning in 35 minutes when Mair capitalised on a mistake but a great save from Mcleod prevented a goal and Thomson cleared with Wilson closing in to score from the rebound.

The warning wasn’t heeded and Violet took the lead with a simple goal a minute later. With Roselea attacking a corner the ball was cleared leaving MAIR one on one with Mcleod and despite the keeper making a great save he had time to compose himself and draw the ball back onto his left foot and stroked the ball into the corner from 16 yards out.

Violet had one last chance as the half drew to a close but Wilson’s effort was straight at Mcleod who saved well.

Half Time Montrose Roselea 0 Dundee Violet 1

Roselea made an immediate change into the second half with Ross Mitchell replacing the injured Kyle Findlater.

In 62 minutes Morgan Smith had a great volley go just wide of the post.

Roselea then replaced Reid with Greig in 63 minutes.

There were a few late tackles coming in from Violet which had fouls awarded but somehow no yellow cards were shown. In both incidents it was the Violet players who required treatment which seemed to be a time wasting ploy.

Sub Greig did well to get wide and his low cross flashed across the Violet goalmouth and Cruickshank picked the ball up wide of the back post and appeared to be clipped as cut the ball back from the byeline.

Roselea made their final change in 75 minutes with Andrew Tringham coming on for Michael Cruickshank.

There was a great chance for Roselea in 78 minutes when a shot was deflected into the path of Collier and when his miss hit shot fell to Watson he blasted the ball against keeper Thain who managed to help the ball over the bar.

With Roselea pushing for an equaliser Violet did have a break away and they did in 81 minutes but poor finishing from McConnachie cost them the two goal cushion that would have sealed the match. Roselea pressed with Greig looking like the biggest threat but Violet continued their time wasting tactics and saw the win out and take the three points back to Dundee.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 0 Dundee Violet 0

This game looked like it was going to be tight from the off and it also looked like whoever scored the first goal would be the likely winner. For a team who also looked secure there was desperation about the Violet performance which spoiled the game as a spectacle. With results elsewhere going against Roselea they now slip down to 8th in the Table.

With three away games to go it would be nice to get a couple of wins to finish as high as possible in the Table to show something for all the hard work they have put in over the season.

Roselea travel to Glenrothes on Sat May 9th with the home side deep in the mire and looking very likely to be relegated if their form continues. Roselea will be running a bus and supporters are welcome to travel but please contact a Committee member. The bus will leave the Golf Inn at 11.30am and will return from Glenrothes at approx 5.30pm.

HONOURS SHARED IN ANGUS DERBY

Posted by Roy Gill at Apr 25, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

MONTROSE ROSELEA V FORFAR WEST END

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUES

AT APRIL 25TH 2015

Roselea faced Forfar West End in the Angus Premier League derby match and despite sitting on 37 points which was two more than they survived with last season were still not assured of their place in the Division next season. West End meanwhile were dragged into one of the relegation spots due to a run of four losses and were desperate for points to haul them up the table.

Roselea were minus Calum Rae and Andrew Tringham but to balance things out Michael Cruickshank returned from suspension and after a spell out injured Ross Mitchell returned to the starting line up.

Despite the rain overnight the pitch was still fiery and the predicted drop in temperatures combined with a stiff breeze made for testing conditions with a definite chill in the air.

Mcleod, Reoch, Whyte, Thomson, Findlater, Mitchell, Anderson, Collier, Campbell, Watson & Reid. Subs: Greig, Smith, R Taylor, Cruickshank & Brand.

In the opening 10 minutes West End had the upper hand and looked the sharper side. McDonald managed to cut back from the bye line and Mcleod saved at the second attempt.

The first real opening came in the 22nd minute and it was for the home side. Smith missed a Whyte clearance and this let Campbell in but he took one touch too many and the angle was narrowed with Burns saving well with his feet.

Dale Reid then had a good opening in 37 minutes when Campbell played him in but as he cut across his man the ball rose up and he scooped his shot high and wide.

After a quiet opening the game burst into life in the 38th minute. Watson flicked a ball onto Reid who went down in a collision with the keeper and with Roselea still appealing for a penalty a long clearance sent Darren SCOTT away at the other end and he drew Mcleod before calmly slotting the ball under the keeper for the opener.

Roselea had a half chance to get back on level terms a couple of minutes later. Keeper Burns came and punched a good Findlater cross but the ball fell to Watson who squared for Reid to header narrowly wide at the near post.

Right on half time Roselea had a claim for a penalty when Campbell went down in the box. Although there was contact the player was booked for a dive which seemed to be a harsh decision.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 0 Forfar West End 1

As the second half kicked off the match became bogged down with some skirmishes and some petty diving from both sides. It was no surprise that a sending off might happen and it came on the hour mark. Craig Bell got involved off the ball and was shown a straight red card with West End claiming a home player had started the incident. This left the visitors with 10 men for the last half hour.

Roselea made a double change in 65 minutes with two defenders coming off with Findlater & Thomson being replaced by Taylor & Greig. The move seemed to work and they managed to get on level terms in 75 minutes. Ross Mitchell who had struggled to get into the game managed to have one of his trademark runs down the right and his far post cross was expertly side footed volleyed home by Liam CAMPBELL from 12 yards out.

Roselea started to push for the winner with West End on the back foot but at the same time looking determined to hold out for a point.

Roselea made a third change with Michael Cruickshank replacing the injured Mitchell in 80 minutes.

Reid had a chance for Roselea as he got a break of the ball in the box but Burns saved with his feet and then from an Anderson corner Campbell’s downwards header was well saved by the West End keeper. West End did force a couple of breaks however in a strange move they seemed content to hold the ball in the corner viewing it as a point gained with ten men rather than trying to grab a winner.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Forfar West End 1

This was a fair result and reflection on the game. Although Roselea created more chances West End fought well for the point. It was a towsy game at time and there were a smattering of bookings aside the red card for the West End player.

Roselea retain 5th spot but with a host of clubs on their tail they will need a couple more wins to try and keep in the top six come the end of the season. Although not yet fully safe they are slowly getting towards the finishing line.

On Weds April 29th Roselea travel for Tayport for a midweek League match which kicks off at 6.45pm then on Saturday 2nd May they play their final home match of the season against Dundee Violet with a 2.30pm Kick Off. This leaved them with three away games to finish the season against Broughty Ath, Edinburgh Utd and Glenrothes with the dates to be advised.

LEA BACK TO WINNING WAYS

MONTROSE ROSELEA v BATHGATE THISTLE

MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT APRIL 18TH 2015

Roselea welcomed Bathgate Thistle to Broomfield Park for an East Premier League match. The visitors won the reverse fixture 3-2 in late August and it was a late winner which netted them the three points. Although at the wrong end of the table they arrived with a decent run of form having beaten Dundee Violet the previous Saturday and drew with Edinburgh Utd midweek. Roselea were on a six game run without a win although they had drawn three of these but were looking for a win to put them on the road to Premier League safety. They welcomed back Calum Rae from suspension and although Michael Cruickshank was also free of suspension he was working. Ross Mitchell was still injured and Ryan Taylor was on holiday.

Although temperatures were high inland a slight sea haar made it feel very much chillier. Although the pitch was looking great in reality the lack for rain meant it was brick hard and not conducive to playing pretty football.

Roselea: Mcleod, Reoch, Whyte, Thomson, Findlater, Rae, Anderson, Collier, Campbell, Watson & Reid. Subs: Tringham, Smith, Greig & Kerrigan.

Roselea opened brightly with Reid tearing away up the right hand side and his cross intended for the head of Watson was turned behind for a corner. When the corner was cleared Thomson was caught the wrong side of Murphy but did well to get back and block the ball.

In 5 minutes Craig Anderson played a wonderful diagonal ball to Watson and he took his man on and shot narrowly wide once he had cut in from the left.

In 8 minutes the visiting keeper Adamson vouched that the conditions were testing when he completely missed the ball as he attempted to clear a pass back. From Anderson’s corner, Collier just failed to get a flick on at the near post and Whyte just failed to connect with the awkwardly bouncing ball at the far post.

Roselea were bossing the play at this stage and were unlucky not to go ahead in 10 minutes. Campbell sent in a great cross which Collier flicked on and the ball looked to be heading for the net but hit the post and rebounded into Adamson’s arms.

Although Roselea were on top they needed a goal to show for their domination but it wasn’t coming despite decent efforts from Campbell and Whyte.

Roselea finally took the lead that they deserved in 35 minutes. Reid flicked a ball on and Calum WATSON in typical determined fashion manged to poke the ball home despite his heavy second touch and it looked like the keeper didn’t fancy it.

Watson had another chance five minutes later when his first shot was blocked then with a good sight of goal he managed to shoot straight at Adamson when anywhere else might have resulted in a goal.

Bathgate had a big let off in 44 minutes when Reid broke clear and was clattered by Young with the keeper in close proximity as well. Young was booked and Campbell took the free kick but Adamson saved the low strike easily.

In stoppage time there was one last chance for Roselea when a wonderful crossed ball was met by the knee of Watson who must have seen the ball late and he could not steer the ball into the net.

Half Time: Montrose Roselea 1 Bathgate Thistle 0

Roselea did not waste any time increasing their lead with a second goal coming a minute into the second period. Rae played a lovely ball round the full back and when his cross came back to him WATSON conned the keeper by looking like he was going to cross but whipped a great left footed curler past him and into the net.

In 49 minutes Watson and Reid combined well to set up Campbell who arrived at the back post and despite trying to place the ball in the corner it slipped agonisingly wide of the post.

Roselea increased their lead on the hour mark from the penalty spot. Reid broke into the box and as he rounded Adamson he was brought down. WATSON was give the opportunity of a hatrick and duly obliged by despatching the kick into the net sending the keeper the wrong way.

Reid was out of luck in 65 minutes when he smacked a 20 yard shot off the bar.

Roselea made a double change in 68 minutes with Findlater and hatrick man Watson being replaced by Tringham and Greig. Reid then missed a gilt edged chance when he nutmegged the last man but managed to screw his shot wide of the target in 70 minutes.

In 72 minutes Morgan Smith replaced Calum Rae.

In 78 minutes Bathgate gave themselves a life line when they pulled back a goal. Reoch was harshly punished for a foul on the edge of the box and duly booked for dissent. JACONELLI took the free kick and shot past the wall into the corner of the net from 20 yards out.

Bathgate were reduced to ten men in the 80th minute. Greig was through on goal but brought down just outside the box and defender McCormack was almost inside the changing rooms when the red card was shown. Reid took the free kick but seemed to strike the ball into the ground.

Reid was determined to get on the scoresheet but despite two good on target shots it wasn’t to be his day. This was confirmed in the 88th minute when he sclaffed a Campbell cross and the ball fell to Morgan SMITH who scored from close range to complete the scoring for the day.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 4 Bathgate Thistle 1

After a long run without a win there was a real togetherness about this display. Roselea looked assured at the back with the midfield working very hard to close the Bathgate middle men. Calum Watson and Dale Reid were always dangerous and the biggest surprise was how long it took to break the deadlock. The win keeps Roselea in 5th spot and they still have an outside chance of making the third place which would be a play off against the second bottom side in the Superleague.

On Saturday April 25th Roselea are at home to Forfar West End in the league. West End are third bottom and will be very desperate to pick some points up. In a very tight League they can still end up a point behind Roselea if they win all their four games in hand. Kick Off at Broomfield Park is 2.30pm
