GA EXIT FROM DOWNFIELD

Posted by Roy Gill at Oct 25, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Montrose Roselea 2-3 Downfield

Roselea crashed out of the GA Engineering cup after surrendering a two goal lead against their fellow Tayside opponents.

Campbell was brought back into the starting eleven and within 2 minutes delivered a superb cross which just evaded Collier at the back post.

Roselea were causing problems down the left and Taylor whipped in a cross which found Greig, but his header was comfortably saved by the Downfield keeper.

Roselea took the lead after 12 minutes. McDowell collected the ball at the half way line before surging forward and playing a superbly weighted ball into COLLIER. The big striker took a touch before dinking the ball over the keeper and into net.

Downfield had their first attacking moment of note after 19 minutes when Martin headed towards goal but McLeod made a solid save to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Collier was enjoying finding space behind their back line and nearly got his second after 24 minutes. He chased down a through ball and Downfields keeper was caught in no man's land. Collier tried to chip him but a defender was able to head away the danger.

Whyte and Thomson were showing they could be a strong centre half partnership as Thomson dealt with numerous long balls played up by the Downfield defence. Whyte bravely threw his head in the way of a shot that was heading towards goal by Timmons.

Dalgarno floated in a free kick from afar which Collier knocked down for Tringham, but the latter's right footed volley sailed over the bar.

After 42 minutes Roselea doubled their lead through Collier again. Campbell played the ball down the left wing, COLLIER bent his run well to beat the offside trap and showed great composure to round the keeper and stroke the ball home.

Downfield were to score a vital goal just before half time when a Clark shot took a fortunate deflection to RIGDEN who made no mistake with the finish.

Half Time

Down field equalised after 50 minutes. Campbell conceded a free kick 5 yards outside the box. SMALL found a gap in the wall and drilled a low shot which found the target.

Roselea made three changes midway through the second half as S.Smith, Sturrock and M.Smith replaced Campbell, Greig and Tringham.

Sturrock had a strike after 83 minutes from far out well saved.

With 2 minutes remaining Mcartney raced through on goal but McLeod pulled off a brilliant save to keep things level.

Just as penalties loomed, Roselea were dealt the killer blow. Whyte was adjudged to have fouled Clark in the box. TIMMONS stepped up from 12 yards out and made no mistake to send the away team through to the next round.

A cruel blow for Roselea as they exit their second cup competition of the season. Despite being two goals down Downfield never gave up and were probably just about worthy of winning the match after a poor second half showing from Roselea.

Back to league action next week as Roselea travel down to play Edinburgh United.

EDINBURGH UTD 3 MONTROSE ROSELEA 1
MCBOOKIE.COM EAST PREMIER LEAGUE

SAT OCT 17th 2015

Roselea travelled to Paties Road, Edinburgh to face bottom side Edinburgh Utd as they returned to Premier League action for another week with the Scottish Cup tie at Bonnyrigg Rose looming the following week. Roselea were sitting 10th out of 16 sides after nine games played but a game in hand over a few sides and were looking to capitalise. The sides drew 2-2 there last season in what was Roselea's final match and saw them safely stay up. Roselea had the usual personnel changes with Andrew Tringham missing due to his wedding day, Jack Dalgarno was on holiday, Calum Watson and Ross Mitchell missed out through injury. On the plus side Callum Rae returned from injury and Michael Cruickshank, Steven Smith & Grant Mowatt all returned from Tartan Army duties in the Algarve.

Roselea: Mcleod, Rae, Campbell, Sturrock, Whyte, Thomson, S Smith, Anderson, McDowell, Cruickshank & Collier. Subs M Smith, R Taylor, S Greig & Mowatt

jury worries and Andrew Tringham will miss the match for a very viable reason, it is his wedding day!In 6 minutes after a good start from the home team it was Roselea who had a double chance when Collier combined well to set up Cruickshank who had his shot saved by the feet of Easton in the home goal. The ball came straight back in to the middle and Collier was unlucky to see his header come back off the post.

In 10 minutes the home side then hit the post when Auriemma was through on goal following a bad pass from McDowell but he slid the ball past Mcleod only to the see the woodwork thwart him.

There was a big scare for Roselea in 12 minutes when Mcleod came out of his box to clear a back pass and completely missed it on the bobbly pitch, Elliot picked up the loose ball but only managed to hit the back end of Mcleod as he attempted to shoot.

Roselea had a great move in 18 minutes which saw Campbell send in one of his text book crosses, with three Roselea players attacking the ball it was a slight touch from Collier that took the ball away from Whyte.

It could easily have been 2-2 in the opening minutes however it was the home side who took the lead in 20 minutes with a well taken goal. ELLIOT evaded three tackles with the quick feet he showed in the game to create an opening and slotted home from 10 yards

In a total end to end game Michael Cruickshank had a great chance to equalise but again was thwarted by a brilliant save from young home keeper Easton

Roselea won a series of corners and in an obvious well worked moved Collier was left with space at the back post for a  diving header however with the goal at his mercy he headed the ball downwards and over the bar.

In 34 minutes Collier was unlucky when he capitialised on a mistake by Devlin of Utd looked to be in on goal however some overzealous refereeing saw a foul being awarded when it was a clear mistake by the defender.

The game was turned on its head in 35 minutes with a very harsh red card for Roselea. Craig Sturrock was late with a tackle and was certainly not off the ground or two footed and was dismissed. At most it was a booking which was a view shared by the home Officials.

Just as the day was looking dire for Roselea they were handed a well deserved break. A great ball from Collier sent Cruickshank away and when he was faced one on one with keeper Easton the young stopper again saved with his feet however the ball ricochet off DEVLIN for an own goal.

HALF TIME: EDINBURGH UTD 1 MONTROSE ROSELEA 1

In a slower start to the second half Scott Mcdowell foraged into the Edinburgh box however his left shot seen yet another great save from Easton.

In 57 minutes Callum Rae had to do his corner duties when he cleared a goalbound header off the line.

In 62 minutes the referee awarded what seemed like a very harsh penalty against Whyte for a handball from close range. NWANZE did not want to debate and converted the kick with ease.

It was to get worse for Roselea in 67 minutes when STEVENS hit a driller of a shot which took a slight deflection into the net to kill Roselea.

In 71 minutes there was a melee in the box following a scramble for the ball. Whyte left the field with a cut eye and had to be replaced by Morgan Smith.

Roselea made two more changes in a bid to get back into the game with Greig on for Anderson in 73 and Taylor for S Smith in 77 minutes.

Roselea were still in the game however a summary of their day was when Grieg did so well to disposess Edinburgh and cut in to give Taylor an open goal however his pass was short and an Edinburgh defender came in to clear.

Full Time: Edinburgh Utd 3 Montrose Roselea 1

Roselea will rue the amount of chances the had on what was a very uneven surface and the red card and penalty decisions did turn the game in the favour of the home side. Roselea drop a place to 11th however looking at the table it is starting to look like being two halves of promotion and relegation at this stage. There were some good and bad performances from the boys in green with Arron Thomson being the star Roselea performer.

Roselea need to pick themselves up with another tough trip to Edinburgh for a Scottish Junior Cup tie at Bonnyrigg Rose. Rose sit fourth in the East Superleague and a tough tie is expected.

2nd HALF SEES THORNTON OFF

Posted by Roy Gill at Oct 2, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Montrose Roselea 2-0 Thornton Hibs

Roselea collected a crucial 3 points after a good second half performance ensured a victory over newly promoted Thornton Hibs.

Collier and Tringham were available again and both took their place on the bench.

Truth be told the opening third of the first half was pretty dire with both teams seemingly cancelling each other out as ball possession seemed priority over creating opportunities.

It took until the 23rd minute for either team to have registered an effort on target. Hepburn of Hibs struck a half volley from 30 yards out which was comfortably saved by McLeod.

Roselea had the best chance of the half after 30 minutes. Mowatt played Anderson in on goal but Rowbotham stood tall for the shot and saved well from the wingers strike.

Mcnab of Thornton was showing great feet and causing Roselea problems. He looked to have read a back pass gone wrong but McLeod was very alert to come out and clear the danger.

Thornton had one more chance before half time when Wilson caught a sweet strike from outside the box but it fizzed past the post.

Half time

It was a disappointing half for the home team and they knew they had to up their game if they were going to come away with anything.

Mowatt had a half chance when he turned well just outside the box but leant back as he went to strike and saw his effort sail over the bar.

Roselea made their first change after 67 minutes which went on to change the course of the match when Greig made way for Collier.

Thornton had a rare chance in the second half when Crichton created a bit of space for himself to shoot but Whyte slid in brilliantly to thwart the away player.

Roselea were holding the ball up well further up the park as they looked to open up the away defence but just couldn't get the slice of luck they needed.

Campbell came on for Rae after 78 minutes.

Roselea finally opened the scoring their second half play had deserved. Collier chested down well and passed to Anderson who was now playing a central role. ANDERSON shimmied and created space for a shot and swept the ball brilliantly into the far corner to give the keeper no chance.

The home team doubled their lead with a gift from the away side. Taylor played a long searching ball up top and as a McGowan headed back to try find his keeper it went over Rowbotham head and into the empty net.

Tringham then replaced McDowell.

Roselea had one more chance to put more shine on the scoreline when Cruickshank squared for Campbell but it was just a little too pacey for the sub to direct the ball into the net.

Full Time: Montrose Roselea 2 Thornton Hibs 0

A superb 3 points for the 'Lea which pushes them further up the league and away from the relegation zone. Next week it's cup duties as Roselea host Downfield in the GA Cup.

Roselea: McLeod, Dalgarno, Taylor, Whyte, Thomson, McDowell(Tringham), Anderson, Rae(Campbell), Greig( Collier), Cruickshank, Mowatt

SWIFTS HOLT OUT FOR WIN

Posted by Roy Gill at Sep 18, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Montrose Roselea travelled to Perth to the riverside stadium to face Jeanfield Swifts.  Andrew Tringham and Kyle Findlater were unavailable due to work. Roselea were in for a tough afternoon with swifts being top of the Premier League.

Roselea: Mcleod, Rae, Sturrock, Whyte, Collier, Mcdowell, Greig, Anderson, Watson, Mowatt & Taylor. Subs: S Smith, Cruickshank, Campbell, Thomson & M Smith.

Roselea win 2 corners within a minute with Whyte heading close.

Roselea opened the scoring in 2 minutes when sturrock clearance is crossed by Taylor and WATSON lashes the ball into the net from 8 yards.

Watson is in the action again in 7 minutes but this time for a booking after a late tackle on Deans.

Fleming of Jeanfield plays a one-two inside the box but wastes the chance with a poor cutback in 10 mins. Holt then fires in free kick which Mcleod deals with.

It's level in 17 minutes Jeanfield work the ball wide to holt and his cross is turned home by MCLEISH from close range.

There was a close call for Roselea in 26 mins when a great strike from Smith hit the bar and out.

There was a great chance for the visitors in 33 minutes when Fleming gifted Watson a chance with a poor throw in, Watson tried to round Mitchell but the keeper got a touch and Taylor struck a great shot just over from the loose ball.

The half ends with a half chance for Mowatt which is off target.

Half time Jeanfield Swifts 1 Montrose Roselea 1

Holt went down in the box with strong appeals however a minute later they did have one when this time Kelly went down in the box and HOLT converted.

Cruickshank & Steven Smith replaced Greig & Taylor.

Collier won a header from a Mowatt corner in 53 minutes however it was safely cleared off the line.

In 65 another chance for Watson when Gunnion missed his header, Watson first hit the keeper then chipped over him only to see it headed off the line.
It was to be a cruical chance as a minute later MCLEISH hit a screamer of a second from the edge of the box.

Morgan Smith then replaced Anderson for Roselea.

Roselea were pressing and chances were coming with Watson collier and Sturrock all going close.

Roselea were the superior side in the closing stages and Morgan Smith had a great drive tipped over the bar.

Holt slid a free kick just wide of the post with last kick of the ball as Swifts ran out winners

Full time Jeanfield 3 Montrose Roselea 1

The overall score was a true reflection of the game however had Roselea taken one of their chances in the last 20 minutes it would have been interesting to see what would have happened as they were far superior at that stage. The two early subs in the second half seemed to be the driver to the improved performance but at the end of the day they were up against a very good Jeanfield side.

Roselea get another welcome break from League business with a 1st Round Scottish Cup tie at home to Forfar Albion with a 2.30pm KO.

3 POINTS GAINED IN THE RAIN

Posted by Roy Gill at Sep 12, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Montrose Roselea 2-1 Falkirk Juniors

Roselea picked up a much deserved three points in a thoroughly entertaining fixture at Broomfield Park.

It took just a minute for the home team to open the scoring. Greig crossed in high from the right and as Watson put the away keeper under pressure he fumbled and TAYLOR was on hand to finish.

It was a dream start for Roselea and it was nearly twice as good after three minutes. Watson charged down the keeper but as he looked to get a shot away a defender recovered well to stop the attack.

Campbell, playing at full back was getting involved as much in an attacking sense as he could. His delivery found Taylor but the winger could only direct his header off target.

It was the most dominant first period Roselea have enjoyed this season and after 23 minutes a Watson knock-on found the energetic Greig. The winger composed himself to shoot but his effort was straight at the keeper.

Campbell again delivered a great ball after half an hour this time finding Watson who headed narrowly over.

It took 32 minutes for Falkirk to register their first chance of the match. Scott had a snap shot on the edge of the box but it was easily held by McLeod in the Roselea goal.

The home team had one more chance before half time. Watson flicked on to Taylor but the ball fell on his weaker foot and his audacious flick was well wide.

Half time

Truth be told the first half couldn't have been much easier for Roselea but things were to change massively for them in the opening stages of the second half.

In the 47th minute the troublesome Mcateer created space to shoot but his effort was well charged down by Whyte.

Falkirk enjoyed vast possession of the ball but did not create anything of real note. The home teams centre half pairing of Whyte and Sturrock, along with the protection the hard working Collier and Anderson offered them, were frustrating the away team hugely as Roselea delivered a hugely impressive defensive shape under pressure.

Mowatt had Roselea's first chance of the half after 68 minutes. The away keeper failed to clear his lines but as Mowatt picked up the loose ball and struck towards goal the keeper recovered well to save the effort.

Roselea made their first change after 70 minutes with Steven Smith replacing the exhausted Taylor.

It wasn't long before Roselea introduced more fresh legs as Tringham and McDowell replaced Greig and Mowatt as Roselea appeared to go on the front foot again.

They doubled their lead after 82 minutes. A long ball from the back bounced over the keepers head and Watson looked set to score. He passed the ball towards the empty net but an away defender got back brilliantly to divert the goal bound ball out for a corner. Tringham took the corner and found the head of Whyte who's effort was stopped on the line but WATSON showed the most desire for the ball and poked it home to make it 2-0.

The cushion was not to be held for very long though. Falkirk played a direct long ball to Mcateer who showed great strength to win the ball and create space before blasting into the roof of the net to set up a tense finish.

Roselea managed to see out the game mainly in Falkirk's half. Steven Smith had a shot straight at the keeper following a good Anderson pass, and then Smith again forced a good save from the away keeper who could only palm the ball into Watson's path. Watson converted but the referee blew for offside.

Falkirk had one final chance to get something from the game. A corner was played in and substitute Jess won the header. His effort looked certain for the back post before Smith blocked it on the line and full time was signalled much to the relief of everyone who had braved the weather to support the 'Lea.

A much needed win after a poor run in form for Roselea. They now travel to play Jeanfield Swifts next Saturday as they search for a good away performance to match their home showings.
