8U: The news article & picture in progress...stand by...coming soon from the 8U staff! 12U: The Spike 12U’s traveled to Hopkinsville, Kentucky (aka Hoptown) July 14th thru the 16th to compete in the “Play It Again Sports Classic” baseball tournament. After completing the pool play format with a record of 2-1, the team was seeded #2 in the elimination brackets. The Spikes defeated the host team the Christian County Colonels 4-3 in defensive battle in the first round. This moved the team on to the semi-finals vs. the Western Kentucky Mustangs. The Spikes came out strong and run-ruled them in 3 innings, 13-1. Then it was on to the championship game Sunday evening at 7:00 pm and facing a familiar foe, the Southern Indiana Bombers. The Spikes were out to avenge their only pool play loss, which had came at the hands of the Bombers the night before. The boys came out focused and ready to compete. The Bombers also came out strong as usual and putting the ball in play, but due to some very good pitching and great defense, the Spikes held them scoreless though five innings while themselves scoring 2 runs in the first and 6 runs in the third inning on a total of 10 hits to end the game by run-rule after five complete innings, 8-0. Then it was time to take the team pictures, dump the water cooler on Coach Brad and claim the huge Championship trophy, which stood six feet tall!!! These boys came to the field ready to play this weekend and showed what they are capable of. Of course they did have a little extra incentive since Wilky promised to shave his head if they won it all. Hmmm, where is Wilky by the way? Keep an eye out for him and his new look!! Way to go Spikes!! Go to the 10U's own Webpage, then click on the "10U Pictures" folder for a shot of a few teammates offering to assist Wilk with "The Haircut". The weekend started with an opening game against the Mt. Vernon Wildbats. The Spikes remembered an earlier loss dealt to them and avenged that loss with a commanding win, 12-3! What a great start!! The Spikes second round opponent turned out to be the Owensboro Nitro, a team that seems to give the Spikes fits on most occasions. The Spikes played tough, and with the help of a perfectly, orchestrated squeeze-play at the plate, tied the game in the sixth inning and went on to win 7-3! The Spikes once again found themselves in the Sunday afternoon Championship game against the Louisville Panthers. The Panthers squeaked out a close game and defeated the Spikes 5-3 in the first game. This sent the two teams into the "if needed" second championship game, with the Panthers holding on to a 7-4 lead and winning their second Kentucky BPA State Title. Great weekend guys! Stick around, we will get one of those 11U Championships! Thanks also to Jordan Messmer for playing with the Spikes this weekend!! imageimageimage
