The EDSL Steven Howansky League Cup final was played at Tibbetts Park #3 on Sunday June 8th.
Before the game, EDSL president Peter Pinori addressed the 2 finalists San Onofre (already winner of the EDSL Open playoff) and Czechoslovakia at center field. He was joined by Steven Howansky’s wife Mary, daughter Lena and son Mark who also said a few words about his dad and how proud his entire family is of having the EDSL open cup named after him.
Czechoslovakia were the more organized team in the first half and they jumped to a 3-0 lead through goals by Jakub Fedorcak, Jirka Novak and Ondrei Rujak. San Onofre came back strong in the second half with a goal by captain Manuel Gonzalez in the 50th minute. The speed and skill of San Onofre wore down the older Czechoslovakia team and they scored again with Arturo Baranjas to make it 3-2. San Onofre continued to press and control the game, but the Czech team caught them on the counter attack when Peter Trlica scored to make it 4-2. Manuel Gonzalez later scored his second of the game to make it 4-3 and it looked like San Onofre might complete its comeback, but the Czech team goalie Vladislav Budaj made 3 key saves down the stretch and the Czechs held on to claim the cup.
Czechoslovakia coach Peter Fatol said after post game “After we eliminated the Yonkers Ukrainians in the Quarter Finals, we promised them that we would win the trophy for their long- time supporter Steven Howansky."
Both teams showed great sportsmanship and should be congratulated for a game that was well played.
In a battle for league supremecy in the Liga de Yonkers, Real Cotjia defeated Morazan convincingly by the score of 4-0. Real Cotjia now stands atop the league table with 10 points and an impressive goal differential of 15 after just 4 games played! Having suffered their first defeat, Morazan now occupy the second spot with 7 points. Was this a preview of the league championship? That remains to be seen, but Morazan will certainly be hoping to get another chance at Real Cotjia in September.
In another top half of the the table battle Real Sociedad handed Pumas their first loss of the season by defeating them narrowly 1-0. Pumas hold the 3rd spot despite the loss, and Real Sociedad rise to the 4th position. Both teams currently have 7 points, however Real Sociedad have a game in hand having only played 3 games through 4 weeks.

Czechoslovakia advances to the EDSL Steve Howanky Cup by winning in PK’s over a very strong African Youth Academy. The African team moved ahead 1-0 and kept this score until the end of the first half. Czecholsovakia had 3 chances to even the score but could not find the equalizer.
The Czechs continued to pressure forward and eventually were able to tie the game in the second half capitalizing on a rebound from a free kick outside the PK area. AYA fought back and recaptured the lead at 2-1 and was winning rught up until 5 minutes to full time when the Czechs again tied the game! At the end of regulation the score was 2-2. This well-played game was, however, going to be decided by penalty kicks. The Czechs converted on all 5 kicks while the African team missed one of their attempts and Czechoslovakia is now moving on to the Final to face San Onofre.
Excellent Officiating done by the referee crew
The Czech will play the final next week vs San Onofre who had beat the Westchester CF last week on the other semifinal. The game will be at Tibbets park #3 at 10am 6/8/14. Good luck to both teams!
San Onofre beat Germania by the score of 6-0 on Sunday to win the 2014 EDSL Playoffs. Unfortunately, for Germania they had to play down players the entire game. San Onofre scored 5 of their 6 goals in the first half of the game. However, in a good show of sportsmanship, San Onofre did not try to add any more goals as the remainder of the game played out. Excellent Officiating done by the referee crew. Congratulations to both teams and especially to San Onofre for an outstanding season and run to the Championship!
