SAINTS 3 Deveronside 2

Posted by Gordon Humble at Nov 11, 2016 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Three wins on the trot that pushes us up the league into 6th position, all be it with a few more games played than those around us. However, despite opening the game well and having chances to take the lead it was Deveronside who went into a 2-0 half time lead.

Right from the start we were on the front foot and Devin Colbert should have scored after 3 minutes but with just the keeper to beat he seemed to hesitate and his low shot came off the keeper's legs for a corner. Four minutes later, after sustained pressure Greg Mackie found Colbert with a neat flick but once again the Deveronside keeper denied the striker with a fine save.

There was a penalty claim by the Saints players on 12 minutes when Sam Smith seemed to be pushed but the referee waved play on. In contrast, at the other end the referee awarded a penalty to Deveronside without any of the visitors claiming for one, and they duly accepted the chance and took the lead.

This gave the Banff outfit a bit of belief and they increased their lead on 25 minutes from a low corner that was stabbed into the net inside the 6 yard box. Lyndain O'Brien in Saints goal made an important save a minute later to keep it at 2-0.

Saints obviously wanted to prove something at the start of the second half and took the game to their opponents right from the start. On 60 minutes Craig Simpson lined up a free kick wide on the right and despite a wall being well palce he fired a bullet of a shot into the top left hand corner of the Deveronside net to reduce the lead to 2-1. A minute later it was 2-2. Kieran Davidson's fanatstic pass found Simpson who squared for Devin Colbert to side foot home.

And it should have been 3-2 Saints on 65 minutes but Sam Smith, with more or less an open goal could only direct a weak shot straight at a defender with the subsequent rebound being blasted wide by Simpson. It was all Saints now as they drove forward looking for the winner.

With 10  minutes remaining Jamie Buglass replaced the injured Simpson and it was the substitute that got the all important winner a minute into injury time when he was released after a Deveronside attack, drove into the box to shoot low into the far corner of the net.

There was a big let off however, when a needless attempt to keep the ball in play was intercepted by Deveronside, but thankfully the cross into the six yard box was just missed by the visiting centre forward.

Buckie Rovers 2 SAINTS 4

Posted by Gordon Humble at Nov 4, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Another good McBookie.com Superleague win this time at wind swept Merson Park, Buckie.

Not the best of starts when within 2 minutes we were 1-0 down. A poor pass back by Taylor Christie to Kieran Davidson left the defender to commit a foul and from the free kick the cross was bundled into the Saints net.

Playing with the strong wind did not make it that easy for Saints with the ball constantly over running. But on 26 minutes Greg Mackie latched onto a through ball and lobbed the advancing keeper to make it 1-1.

Playing with the wind in the second half was always going to suit our game and within two minutes of the restart Taylor Christie headed home from a corner to make it 2-1. Five minutes later it was 3-1 when Mike Bruce headed into the net from close range.

It should have been 4-1 on 62 minutes when Colbert scored after a good run a square ball from Simpson, but despite the linesman not raising his flag, the referee consulted his assitant and got him to change his mind. Crucial decision as that would have killed off the game and with that let off Buckie pulled a goal back on 73 minutes to make the game interesting.

But Saints still had the upper hand and it was Craig Simpson's run down the left and step inside that allowed him to fire in a low shot that found the corner of the net on 84 minutes to make it 4-2.

SAINTS 7 Dufftown 1

Posted by Gordon Humble at Oct 28, 2016 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Back to winning ways with a vengeance, creating chances as before but the difference was in the taking of them, and today it was in the second half that the visitors were run ragged.

But in only the 3rd minute it looked as though Duuftown would take the lead when from a clear offside position a Dufftown forward was denied by a good save from Lyndain O'Brien in Saints goal. Four minute later though, we took the lead when from  a neat flick by Greg Mackie Devin Colbert fired home a low angled drive to score his first goal since retruning from Cove Rangers just over a week ago.

Despite total dominance, it wasn't until the 24th minute that  the lead was increased when Sam Smith picked out Colbert with a cross for the forward to head home his second of the day. Colbert then headed past from a good position before Steve Travers hit high and wide just before half time.

Into the second half and it was attack right from the start. Colbert scored his hat trick on 58 minutes after a surging run from Craig Simpson and a square ball. On 63 minutes it was a very similar move that made four goals for Colbert and 4-0 to Saints.

Dufftown did have a chance on 76 minutes but O'Brien pulled off a fine save from an angled shot. But it was Saints who scored five minutes later when Colbert back headed to Seamus Croll who beat the keeper to the ball to make it 5-0. Simpson finished off a mazy run to make it 6-0 after 78 minutes with Grant Munro then making it 7-0 on 82 minutes.

Dufftown got a conoslation gaol with five minutes remaining.
