WEEK OF JUNE 16

The 2010 Panthers returned to Winthrop University to face the Carolina Sand Gnats in a 9 inning game on Monday, June 16.

GAME 1

SC Panthers  9...............................................................9.....12.....1

Sand Gnats  2................................................................2......4.......1

The Cats jumped out to an early lead and did not look back in the 9-2 victory over the Gnats. Starting pitcher Andy Wilson (4-0) picked up his fourth win of the season and was followed by 6 other Panther pitchers as the pitching staff prepared to travel to Jupiter later in the week. The staff carried a no hitter into the seventh and gave up 4 hits in 9 innings to the solid visitors from Columbia. Jesse Brewer struck out 3 in 2 innings of work.

In an open substitution game the Cat hitters pounded out 12 hits for the game. Ty Linton supplied the big blow with a 3 run HR in the first. Panthers having multi hit games were Brett Austin and Rafael Gonzalez.

The win took the junior Cats record to 12-4 on the season

 

EAST COBB SHOWCASE - UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

The 2009 Panthers traveled west to Georgia to compete in the University of Georgia Showcase.

GAME 1

East Cobb Cubs  1

The 09 Panthers took a little revenge on the 09 Cubs as they faced them for the third time in a week with a 5-1 victory. SS Seth Neely hammered two home runs including a grand slam and accounted for all of the Panther runs with 5 RBIs. Starting pitcher Justin Setzer pitched 5 strong innings for his fourth victory of the season. Reliever Kurt Semeniuk finished things up on the mound.

GAME 2

Team Elite  5

The Panther bats came alive in game 2 in a victory over Team Elite. Casey Gebhardt led the offense with a 2 run triple and RBI single. C Matt Lee collected a pair of hits as did Drew Casella. Starting pitcher Corbin Shive (1-0) earned the win with 5 innings of work and helped his cause with a deep homer to center. Jake Watson finished things up for the senior Cats eighth victory of the year.

The Panthers took a 10-4 lead into the 5th inning only to see the relief pitching and defense fall apart before holding on for a 10-10 tie. Tyler Tewell Closed the last three up and three down to stop the bleeding. Leading hitters for the Panthers were Casey Gebhardt 2-3; Spencer Shuey 2-3 and Rafael Gonzalez 2-3. Drew Casella had a 3 run double.

Corey Roberts (2-1) pitched a complete game gem allowing one run on three hits while striking out 5. Tyler Zupcic led the hitters going 2-4 while 7 other Panthers; Tyler Miller, Rafael Gonzalez, Seth Neely, Corbin Shive, Tyler Tewell, Casey Gebhardt and Drew Casella; all collected hits in the win at the UGA Stadium.

WINTHROP UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT

The 2010 SC Panthers with some added 2009 players participated in the Winthrop University 18U Tournament the weekend of June 12-15. The Cats finished pool play 3-0 and were seeded second into the eight team championship bracket only to lose out in round 1 to eventual tournament winner the East Cobb Cubs.

Winning Pitcher: Joe Shealy (1-0)  5 IP; 2 H; 1 R; 4 K.

Leading Hitters: Andy Wilson 2-3; Casey Gebhardt 1-3 (2B/2 RBI); Ethan Ledbetter 1-2.

The Panthers explode for an eight run inning in the third and finish the strong Cubs team off with solid pitching from starter Joe Shealy and defense featuring middle infield play from Seth Neely and Ethan Ledbetter.

Winning Pitcher: Justin Setzer (3-0)  6 IP; 9 H; 2 R; 6 K

Leading Hitters: SCP - Brett Austin 2-3 (2B); Casey Gebhardt 2-2 (2 RBI); Seth Neely 1-3 (2 RBI).

Justin Setzer picked up his team leading third win scattering 9 hits and striking out 6. Josh Greene stole 5 bases and scored 3 runs creating havoc for the Mavs on the base paths.

Winning Pitcher: Jesse Brewer (3-0) 3 IP; 7 H; 2 K  SAVE: Alex Tomasovich (1)

Leading Hitters: SCP - Mikal Hill 2-4 (2 RBI); Jake Watson 2-4 (2B); Trevor Hovis 1-1 (2 RBI).

The Cats scored in all 6 innings to complete pool play 3-0 against the 2008 Saints. Alex Tomasovich came in the game in relief and slowed down the Saints bats in the hit-a-thon. Eight Panthers collected hits in the game.

Losing Pitcher: Ryan Butler (0-1) 5.66 IP; 3 H; 1 ER; 2 K.

Leading Hitters: SCP - Brett Austin 1-1 (2B); Kurt Semeniuk 1-1; Trey Laney 1-1.

 The Cats left 12 runners on base; played an uncharacteristic error prone defense and did not support the solid outing from starter Ryan Butler in the rematch against the Cubs.

RIPKEN BASEBALL EXPERIENCE

 The 2010 SC Panther were crowned champions this weekend at the Ripken Experience 16U Championships ANDY WILSON was voted the championship game MVP going 3 for 3 at the plate and driving in 4 runs in addition to pitching a complete game on the mound for his third victory this summer.

Winning Pitcher: Alex Tomasovich (2-0)  1.66 IP; 2 H; 0 R

Leading Hitters: Brian Holberton 2-3; Andy Wilson 2-4; Trey Laney 2-4; Josh Greene 2-4.

Starting pitcher Kurt Semeniuk left the game with a 3-1 lead only to see the scrappy Cougars battle back and tie it up. Alex Tomasovich scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Winning Pitcher: Jesse Brewer (2-0)  6 IP; 3 H; 2 R; 10 K.

Leading Hitters: Mikal Hill 3-5 (2/2B); Ethan Ledbetter 3-5 (2B); Kurt Semeniuk 3-5 (2B); Rafael Gonzalez 3-5 (3 RBI).

The Cats pounded out 20 hits including 5 doubles in the victory over the Stars. Starting pitcher Jesse Brewer struck out 10 in 6 innings to pick up his second victory of the season.

Losing Pitcher: Trey Laney (0-1) 1.33 IP

Leading Hitters: Andy Wilson 3-4; Rafael Gonzalez 2-3 (2B).

Starting pitcher Ryan Butler left the game with a 7-3 lead after 5 innings only to see the hard hitting Heat score ten unanswered for a 13-7 loss. The Cats used one of their nine lives to squeak out a "runs against" tie breaker and advance to the championship game.

Winning Pitcher: Andy Wilson (3-0)  6 IP; 7 H; 2 R; 2 K

Leading Hitters: Andy Wilson 3-3 (4 RBIs); Rafael Gonzalez 3-3 (3 RBIs); Josh Greene 3-4 (3 SB).

Behind game MVP Andy Wilson the Panthers take an early lead and do not look back to take the Ripken Experience Championship. 

The junior Panthers continue to hit the ball well with 60 hits and 37 runs scored for the weekend. Andy Wilson led the hitters going 9 for 14. Rafael Gonzalez made an impact going 9 for 15 with 6 RBIs. Brian Holberton was 7 for 16 with a triple and three doubles and Josh Greene finished the week 6 for 11 with 4 stolen bases.

The Cats return to action on June 12 at the Winthrop University Tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY SHOWCASE

 The 2009 SC Panthers completed play at Campbell University 1-1  to take their record to 6-2-2 for the season.

GAME 1

Losing Pitcher: Corey Roberts (1-1)  4 IP; 6 H; 5 R; 2 K

Leading Hitters: Seth Neely 1-3 (1 RBI); Corey Roberts 1-3 (2B).

The senior Cats got behind early and did not mount any come back in taking a loss to the Heat 09's.

Winning Pitcher: Joe Shealy (1-0)  5 IP; 5 H; 2 R; 4 K

Leading Hitters: Tyler Miller 4-6 (2B/3B/ 6 RBI); Richie Shaffer 3-6 (HR/3 RBI); Tyler Zupcic 3-5.

The Panthers bounced back for a commanding win over the Canes-South 14-6. Starting pitcher Joe Shealy had a solid outing to pick up his second win and the Cats put a season high 20 hits on the board capped by a monster HR from Richie Shaffer.

The 2009 Panthers not participating in the NC State Games will join forces with the 2010 team in the Winthrop U Tournament the weekend of June 12.
