News and Announcements

Hello Five Hills Track & Field Club Families and Athletes. During the off season, many of our volunteers are hard at work looking into ways to improve your future experience. We found it very necessary to join an exclusive group to further our Marketing Plan in reaching the local businesses. They are of course providers of 50% - 65% of our operating budget. On November 21, 2002, the Copperas Cove's Chamber of Commerce had its Ambassadors and Charter Members converge at A & L Florist at West Highway 190. I arrived 30 minutes prior to the ground breaking event in our honor scheduled at 5:30 P.M. I wanted the local business men and women leaders to see our athletes in action, their competition hardware (medals and ribbons), and our future change in team colors. The Chamber members were amazed at our early on (April 2002) physical conditioning sessions, which was at times different and difficult in developing our athletics mechanical skills. Our qualifying meets in Llano, and San Antonio had the Chamber members rooting exclusively for those Five Hills athletes. Many of them had read this past summer newspaper clippings from the Copperas Cove's Leader Press and Killeen's Daily Herald, but they thought we were some kind of Semi-pro Organization fulfilling our past youthful dreams and ambitions. Well, athletes like Olivia Ornelas Olympic birth in the 1500 meters Run, Robert Griffin in the 80 meters hurdles, Donald Buckram in the 400 meters, Alexandria Norris long Jumping her way into proudness, Marie James in the 3000 meters Run and Todd Loggains (Five Hills Grand Poo-Bah) in the Decathlon to name a few convinced them that it was their kids representing the Five Hills Community well in competition and good spirit. Our Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony was special (if you truly understand business). I asked Mr. Fred (Purified Water TO GO) and Mr. Thompson (Billy Young Lincoln/Mercury/Isuzu), two of our product and advertising sponsors present to help cut the ribbon. They along with Dejon (Shot Put/ Discuss/ reluctant 100 meter sprinter) cut the ribbon with joy for the camera and our future association. The entire occasion was celebrated around the Five Hills Track & Field Club's past and future endeavors. They were privy to the many photographs taken by Mr. & Mrs. O'Keefe (Now in Washington D. C.), and our Team Publicist, Mrs. Ornelas. They were impressed by the many local businesses who posed with our athletes on those sunny days. Our news letters including the "Coaches' Corner" articles, "Good Dieting", Raffles and many competition performance reports gave our Chamber Members an up close and personal view of our activity. I was well please by their reception, and the hospitality of the A& L Florist owner Mrs. Heide Holman. She was a joy and vowed to support our efforts. Additionally, I was able to network with many interested parties. I feel our team leaders must be a part of the Community's Commerce Activities, as endeavor to move in the direction of our inspired vision; "Being a Community Involved and Embraced Youth Outreach." For the exception of Francis Maxwell and Sheila Lindsey, the Chamber members received first glance of our new colors. We displayed the Black & White infamous Five Hills T-shirt between our new shirts. Our new colors marks the continuation in projecting an attractive vision and direction associated with our program. The white and black uniform will always be the benchmark for the Five Hills Track athletes on the competitive track circuits in and around the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF). Our female athletes will be pleasantly greeted by gold shirts with blue prints, and our male athletes will proudly armored our blue shirts with gold prints. Our benchmark white T-shirts and past uniforms will still be honored, but will no longer be available for distribution. I have 15 male, and 15 females shirts ranging from Adult Mediums to XX Large now on sale. Twenty-two of the shirts are $10.00 thanks to C&C Sportswear supporting our efforts. The remaining eight (8) shirts (4 males, 4 females) are XXL, and command an additional $1.50. I would like to thank all the athletes and parents who supported the Five Hills "Team Colors Day" on November 21, 2002. A special thanks to Mrs. Woods, who proudly wore her Team Shirt to School.
