Hockey: Cox leads Lady Icehawks

Posted by Ron Cook at Dec 7, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

LIVONIA -- Hayley Cox scored three goals Tuesday night to lead the Port Huron Lady Icehawks to a 5-1 win against the Mercy Marlins.

The Lady Icehawks also got goals from Alyssa Ayers and Caylee Gordon, while Morgan Thompson added two assists.

Courtney Harris and Jalissa Zuege each had an assist for the Lady Icehawks, and Taylor Cook stopped 24 shots for the win.

The Lady Icehawks out-shot Mercy 36-25.

"It went well," Lady Icehawks Coach Ron Cook said. "I felt the girls picked up the play a little bit (late in the second period) and that ended up causing some turnovers that ended up in their net."

The Lady Icehawks led 2-0 midway through the second when Mercy got on the board. Cox scored about a minute later, however, to give her team a 3-1 lead.

Port Huron (3-1) returns to action Friday at Glacier Pointe Ice Complex against defending state champion Cranbrook.

Lady Icehawks face tough test

Posted by Ron Cook at Nov 22, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

On some occasions last season, the Port Huron Lady Icehawks didn't play their best hockey and it still was good enough to beat the Division 2 teams of the Michigan Metro Girls High School Hockey League.

This year, the Lady Icehawks are playing in the top division of the league against much tougher competition.

"I thought it was a good idea for us to move up to Division 1," said Caylee Gordon, the only senior on the team. "We needed more of a challenge. Division 2 was slow for us. We were too quick for that. This will help us improve."

Two games into the new season, Port Huron is 1-1. The Lady Icehawks opened the season Wednesday, losing 3-0 to Grosse Pointe South. They rebounded Friday and defeated Ann Arbor Pioneer, 3-2.

"I would see us right now in the middle of the pack in Division 1," Lady Icehawks Coach Ron Cook said. "We have enough girls with experience. The only way I feel I can get them better is by playing a better level of competition."

Last season, teams often were overmatched when they went against Port Huron.

The Lady Icehawks routinely blew teams out and didn't really face a challenge until the end of the season.

The Lady Icehawks finished the season 19-2.
They advanced to the Division 2 league championship where the fell short, losing 1-0 to Plymouth-Canton-Salem.

"I'm really excited to play in Division 1," Lady Icehawks sophomore goaltender Taylor Cook said. "We still go out expecting to play well. With Division 1 you know you will get a lot of work. We have to be ready to skate the whole game.

"I think we are very capable of beating the Division 1 teams. We just have to get in shape and skate to the puck. I'd like to go 19-1."

The Lady Icehawks lost their top scorer, Chelsea Minnie to graduation, but return an experienced unit. They also lost seniors Bri Glombowski and Madelyn Harris.

They return eight players and added five more after playing shorthanded for much of last season.

"When you lose 46 points (from Minnie), you know that's going to be a challenge to make up for that," coach Cook said. "It's no question about that. But we certainly feel we have some girls that can score. But playing Division 1 is going to be a much different game for them."

This season the league once again is stacked with good teams, but that does not scare the Lady Icehawks.

"I think we will do pretty good," Gordon said. "We have a really strong defense this year. If everyone plays their hardest and improves as a team, we will have a good season."

The Lady Icehawks will return Dec. 3 against Livonia Ladywood at Glacier Pointe Ice Complex.

The Port Huron Lady Icehawks picked up their first win of the season Friday, defeating Ann Arbor Pioneer 3-2 at Glacier Pointe Ice Complex.
Morgan Thompson, Sarah Hall and Alyssa Ayers all scored for Port Huron, which was outshot 52-25.

Rachel Freeman and Emy Guttman scored for Pioneer (0-1)

Coming up big for the Lady Icehawks (1-1) in net was sophomore Taylor Cook, who had 50 saves.

"I thought it was a nice recovery after Wednesday's (loss)," Port Huron Coach Ron Cook said.

"The girls came out and fought hard. We wanted a quick start and we wanted to keep the pressure on them. We did that for most of the game."

Thompson, who also had an assist, opened the scoring for Port Huron early in the first period.

After Freeman tied the game for Ann Arbor early in the second period, Hall scored for the Lady Icehawks to give Port Huron the lead for good.

Before the end of the second period, Ayers scored to give the Lady Icehawks a 3-1 lead.

Guttman scored for Pioneer in the third period as they continually peppered shots at Cook.

"In the third period they shortened their bench and played their top two lines," Coach Cook said. "They put a lot of shots on us in the third period but Taylor did an outstanding job in the net and the girls battled to the end."

Hayley Cox had two assists for Port Huron.

Courtney Harris and Kayla McIntyre also assisted on goals.

Paullina Arsenaut had 22 saves for Pioneer.

Port Huron will return Dec. 3 at home against Livonia Ladywood.

Hockey: Lady Icehawks, Big Reds fall

Posted by Ron Cook at Nov 17, 2010 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

GROSSE POINTE -- The Port Huron Lady Icehawks and Port Huron hockey teams each lost their openers by 3-0 scores Wednesday night.

The Lady Icehawks lost to Grosse Pointe North, while Port Huron High lost to Grosse Pointe University Liggett.

For the Lady Icehawks, it was an early taste of what they can expect moving up to Division 1.

"This is going to be what we see on a consistent basis," said Lady Icehawks Coach Ron Cook, whose team plays Friday at Glacier Pointe Ice Complex against Ann Arbor, another top-level Division 1 team. "The message has been that we're going to know where we're at the first two games."

Taylor Cook played in goal and stopped 32 shots for the Lady Icehawks. They were out-shot 35-13.

"We got strong goaltending," Ron Cook said. "They put a lot of pressure on us. We turned the puck over a little too often, and we made two big mistakes that cost us on breakaways.

"It was a very competitive game, they just kind of wore us down.

"We're going to be in every game. We're going to be able to compete in every game, we just can't have those turnovers."
