Teams 1st 2nd 3rd Final
Grosse Pointe North 2 0 4 6
Cranbrook Kingswood 3 1 0 4

Grosse Pointe North’s girls improved to 3-1 in the league and 5-1 overall on Wednesday night as they beat Cranbrook 6-4. Entering the third period the Norsemen were down 4-2. “We made some line changes after the second period in an effort to create more offense and it worked. The kids responded well and they worked really hard.” (Coach Van Eckoute)

Cranbrook
got on the board first. Ariel Magidson, unassisted, picked the top corner after walking out of the corner. Three minutes Cranbrook scored again when Abby Cohen and Audrey Stapleton teamed up to put Cranbrook up 2-0. The Norsemen mounted a charge as Emily N.n scored from Christy S. and Marissa L.. With just over a minute left in the first Liz R. received a pass at the point from Alexa Q. and ripped it past the Cranbrook net minder to tie the score at 2 a piece. The Cranes weren’t going to go quietly though, Audrey Stapelton scored from Ari Shane with thirty two seconds left in the first period to regain the lead 3-2.

The second period was quiet with both teams having opportunities. Finally with four and a half minutes left Cranbrook took a two goal lead for the second time in the game as Ariel Magidson scored off a Carolyn Gard pass.

“During the period break the coaching staff discussed some options for the third period and then we explained them to the kids. The team rallied behind each other and the result was a positive one.” (Coach Van Eckoute) North exploded for four unanswered goals.  Emily N. got her second of the evening on a breakaway after Merideth C. sent a perfect feed up the middle. North’s next goal came just a minute later when Alexa Q. scored to tie the game. Melissa C. controlled the puck down low and fed it out to Quinlan parked in front. Four shifts later Melissa C. scored the eventual game winner after Marissa L. found her on the back door. Cranbrook called a time out to regroup but a minute after the time out North got an insurance goal when Quinlan and LaValley teamed up again. The last eight minutes North played a strong defensive game shutting down any attempted comeback by Cranbrook.

Coach Van Eckoute gave credit for the victory to the fact that he was able to run four lines for the majority of the game. “In the third period we had more gas. When we needed to shorten things up our players were able to be stronger because they were better rested. There were no selfish attitudes we worked together for a common goal. Everyone accepted their role and that’s what every coach whishes for.”

The next goal, just ten seconds later came from Melissa C. off a Kate Z. pass and the third goal was scored thirteen seconds later by Kate Z. from Melissa C. and Lauren W.. “ That was without a doubt the fastest three goals in team history”. (Coach VanEckoute). The Norsemen added a forth goal three minutes later when Rachel L. took a feed from Ashley A. and skated the length of the ice and beat the Regina goaltender over the shoulder. Regina attempted a comeback with a goal of their own as Carly Mockny scored on a high shot from the point at the 12:08 mark but North responded a minute and a half later with their fifth of the night when Angela G. stuffed home a rebound.

“In the second period we had a goal of maintaining puck possession and keeping Regina on their heels and we did that pretty well”, said coach Van Eckoute. Angela G. tapped in her second of the night by going hard to the net and finishing off Rachel L. shot from the point. Also assisting on that goal was Lauren W. who started the play at the Norsemen blue line.

After the break North came out flying again and scored on the opening shift. Marissa L. beat Regina’s Shuna Booth for North’s seventh and final tally. Alexa Q. and Kate Z. earned assists on the goal. Following that North dropped off into a three deep coverage and again attempted to play a puck possession game and keep Regina from mounting any type of comeback. Coach Van Eckoute said, “ We had no need to score again and we have a great deal of respect for Regina’s program so there was really no need to press. We wanted to maintain our gap and continue to improve our puck play.”

Coaches Quote: “We got off to a shaky start, I think there was some first game jitters. After that we settled down and began to handle the puck with more confidence. Our skating improved as the game went on too. We were definitely in better physical condition that became evident by the mid-point of the second period. We have a lot of things we need to do better but for opening night I’m very pleased with our team. It’s always nice to get the first win of the season.”

“We would like to say a special thanks to the members of the guy’s hockey team who came out to support us on opening night."

Northville 1 0 0 1

In the first game on Friday The Norsemen beat ULS 5-0. Meredith C. opened the scoring with a nice shot; Melissa C. screen made it impossible for Liggetts’ Alex boll to see.  North would go on to score three more goals in the first period. On Saturday North faced Northville in the championship game. Senior Goaltender Angela L. got the start. Earlier this season North beat Northville pretty handily and that had coach Van Eckoute worried. “I was concerned my kids would take them lightly and I knew they’d improved over the last three weeks.” (Van Eckoute said)

The first period began much like the first meeting; Anjali Saran got Northville on the board first. Assisting on the goal were Clair Eley and Laura Zima. Grosse Pointe North answered forty five seconds later when Alexa Q. scored off a rebound from a Marissa L. shot. Also assisting on the goal was Melissa C..

In the second period North settled in and took control of the game. Although he score was closer than the first meeting the Norsemen controlled the puck only relinquishing nine shots in the last two periods. North’s second goal came at the 6:12 mark of the second period. Marissa L. tipped in a Liz R. shot from the point. “It was just how you’d draw it up. A low hard shot from the point and the wing just touches it enough to throw the goaltender off said coach Van Eckoute.”  Also assisting on the game winner was Kate Z..

North played a strong puck possession game in the third period and got an insurance goal at 11:17 of the third period. Marissa L. and Liz R. teamed up again to seal North’s tournament victory. “We took a real step forward this weekend as a program. We knew going in we could win this tournament and it was up the kids to bring 100% effort and focus both days. It’s a good feeling to set a goal and then go out and achieve it.” (Said Coach Van Eckoute)
