NORTH BEATS SOUTH 3-1

A strong point this season for the Lady Norsemen has been senior leadership. On ice senior leadership was evident in the rivalry matchup versus GP South as the Lady Norsemen got 3 goals from two seniors, Marissa L. #10 had two goals, and Sarah H. #4 had one as the Norsemen beat the Blue Devils 3 to 1. Although the score did not show it, the Lady Norsemen dominated play and had several quality scoring chances. The collective defensive effort by the team was outstanding and goaltending was solid. Great win for the Norsemen.

GPN News!

Jan. 27, 2007 the Lady Norsemen dropped a tough road loss at Ann Arbor 1 to 0. Despite a good defensive effort and outshooting Ann Arbor, the team could not produce a goal against the stingy goaltending and defense that the scrappy Ann Arbor squad put forth. The Lady Norsemen will look to get back to their winning ways Feb. 1st at home vs. rival GP South. Jan. 23, 2007 the Lady Norsemen hold on at home to take an overtime victory 5 to 4 over Cranbrook. In a back and forth game, the Norsemen's usual steady defense was shaky, but the team dug deep to salvage a quality win over the top ranked Cranbrook team. Captain, Kate Z. #13, had 3 goals and 2 assists. Lauren W. #11 scored on a blistering wrist shot from the point. But the hero that scored the overtime winner at the 1:23 mark of the overtime period was sophomore phenom Alexa Q. #3 added two assits to go with her overtime winner. Overall, it was a quality win and solid team effort. Jan. 19, 2007 the Lady Norsemen came up a little short against the high powered PCS team dropping a close game 4 to 3. After a scoreless first period, the Penguins struck first, just :15 seconds into the second. The game was an up and down game with both teams getting scoring chances. With less than 3 minutes remaining in the second, the Norsemen got a timely goal from senior Sarah H. #4 assisted by senior Phelicia V. #22. At the 1:10 mark, PCS star Katie Zimmerman scored the first of her three goals, putting PCS up 2 to 1 after 2 periods. The third period started with another early goal by PCS, scoring just 1:07 into the period followed by another tally 3 minutes later, both by Zimmerman. However, the Lady Norsemen showed some heart and determination by mounting a comeback and scoring 2 third period goals of their own. Goals were scored by Angela G. #2 and Alexa Q. #3. With an empty net, the Norsemen had two great scoring opportunities to tie the game but the PCS goaltender was up for the challenge.

Game Summary Update!

We would like to apologize for the lack of information on the Lady Norsemen game summaries. We will try to make up for that with a brief summary of the last five games. The Norsemen met up with Mercy Unified – The Moose at Eddie Edgar Ice Arena on Saturday January 13th. The Norsemen came out strong and picked up steam throughout the game to win 7-0, improving their record to 8-2 for the season. Tori B. (#30) registered her 5th shutout of the season. Once again, she and the team were able to put together a solid defensive front to keep Mercy off the board. The team welcomed their captain back to the team after missing the last 4 games. She led the team in goals with a hat trick, while Lauren W. (#11) had three assists. Marissa (#10) also had two goals. On January 10th at the Hazel Park Ice Arena the Lady Norsemen bounced back from the Ladywood game with a 7-0 victory over the Knights. Coach Dockett was happy with the team’s solid defense and a spirited effort by his team. Tori B. (#30) earned her 4th shutout of the season making some terrific saves when the Knights pressured. Overall defensive support by the team was a contributing factor to the shutout. Norsemen points were put on the board by Alexa Q. (#3), Katie L. (#24) each with two goals, and Kristie L. (#15) recorded her first goal of the season from a nice pass from Kara Y.(#16) and Rachael L.(#9). The Lady Norsemen improved their league record to 7 wins, 2 losses. Saturday January 6th the Lady Norsemen went to Arctic Pond Ice Arena to play Ladywood Blazers who are led by the leagues current leading score, Laura Szwed. This is their first game against the Blazers, who came out on top with a 6-3 victory over the Norsemen. Coach Dockett was not happy with the slow start for the Lady Norsemen in their first game of the New Year. The Ladywood Blazers proved to be their toughest competition and jumped out early with the first 3 goals of the game. It was tough to overcome and the Norsemen were clawing back all-night to try to come back but were not successful. One highlight of the game was the goal by Sarah H. (#4) on a nice tip-in shot, assisted by Alexa Q. (#3), and Nikki C. (#23). The good news is the Norsemen will get a chance to even the score with the Blazers on February 7th at Hazel Park. The Lady Noresemen traveled to Cranbrook on December 20th and took their first loss of the season, 2 to 1. The game went back and forth with a great effort by both teams. It was 1-1 going into the 3rd and Coach Dockett knew it was going come down to one play and one mistake that will determine this game. Needless to say the mistake came from the Norsemen and Audrey Stapleton capitalized quickly earning her second and game winning goal of the night. Norsmen sole goal was scored by Junior Katie L. (#24), assisted by Angelo G. (#2). December 22nd just before Christmas break the Norsemen met up with the Bloomfield Knighthawks. Norsemen were able to finish 2006 with an 8-0 win against the Knighthawks. Leading the scoring was freshman Nikki C. (#23) recording a hat trick and senior Marissa L. (#10) adding a goal and three assists. Katie L. (#24) had two goals. Coach Dockett was pleased with the teams effort.
