And so, there you have it -- another list of Heavy Metal Softball history, another match I'm trying to light under my players' feet -- whatever works. In addition to a player receiving the miniature bat -- symbol of hitting prowess -- during the course of the softball year for being a tourney MVP, he can also look forward to hopefully seeing his name engraved on a full-sized, wooden Batting Champions: Metal Men bat, which will be awarded after the very last tournament played to the player with the highest individual batting average (minimum 50 at-bats or 5 tournaments -- whichever qualifies first) at year's end. The Sizzlin' Stick miniature bat can -- and should -- be displayed proudly in the tournament dugout after being awarded, after which, it must be returned to the manager, who will award it to the next deserving player at the beginning of the following tournament. However, the full-sized, engraved Batting Champions: Metal Men bat will be awarded just once a year, making it a true annual tradition. All these incentives, mind you, are given in the spirit of fun and recognition, so I hope no one minds too many flashbulbs going off in his vicinity and sincerely gets into the spirit himself, without too much competitive posturing being shown. That, to me, is what team is all about, and so it is, with fellowship in mind and lightness in heart, that I take pleasue in recogizing some of my teammates -- who, over the years, are people I've come to truly call friends....

Our Team's Highest Award Goes To A Real "Iron" Man -- Pure Metal!!!

After the recently concluded Visalia Spring 2007 league campaign, Frank Fletcher will once again get his name etched in small gold lettering, marking a record sixth individual time he has earned this award since our team was born in 1990. In the near future, he will be presented with the coveted Heavy Metal Softball "Circle of Honor" MVP plaque by team manager, Vern Amaro. MVP! MVP! MVP! -- you deserve it, old friend!
Some Bragging Rights From Our Spring 2007 Visalia City League Campaign!!!

At the end of each league season, some recognition is always given to those individuals who contributed to the team in some way. The following categories -- most real, some intended for a few laughs -- are mostly from the offensive part of softball; some are just plain offensive! (Have a little sense of humor, guys! Don't get defensive. Get it -- "defensive"! Oh, never mind....) So, for what it's worth, here we go:

Visalia City League, Thursday Night, spring 2007
4-6 record: No team award; MVP selected solely by offensive/defensive points

OFFENSIVE CATEGORIES --

Most Plate Appearances: Vern Amaro, Frank Fletcher (tie, 34)

Most At-Bats: Vern Amaro, Frank Fletcher (tie, 33)

Most Runs: Frank Fletcher (16)

Most Singles: Vern Amaro (21)

Most Doubles: Steve Stafford, Mike Lujan (tie, 3)

Most Triples: Nelson Vieira (2)

Most Home Runs: Art Tabacco (3)

Most RBIs: Vern Amaro, Art Tabacco (tie, 16)

Most Walks: Donny Aguiar (7)

Most Sacrifices: Rich Avery (3)

Highest On-Base Percentage: Donny Aguiar (.697)

Highest Slugging Percentage: Art Tabacco (1.240)

Highest Batting Average: Art Tabacco (.720)

Most Hits: Vern Amaro (22)

Most Single-Game Points: Frank Fletcher (31)

Most Offensive/Defensive Points: Frank Fletcher, Art Tabacco (tie, 90)

DEFENSIVE CATEGORIES --

Most Put-Outs: Rich Avery (35)

Most Assists: Lee Garcia (13)

Most Errors: Dennis Ellorin (5)

Highest Fielding Percentage (infield): Rich Avery (1.000 [no errors!] -- "Gold Glove Award")

Highest Fielding Percentage (outfield): Paul Lawrence (1.000 [no errors!] -- "Gold Glove Award")

Highest Fielding Percentage (utility): Frank Fletcher, Nelson Vieira (tie, 1.000 -- "Gold Glove Award")

Most Defensive Points: Rich Avery (36 -- 35 put-out pts. plus 1 assist pt. minus 0 error pts.) (Reminder: +1 point for a put-out, +1 point for an assist, -2 points for each error. In other words, errors "take away" from your overall offensive/defensive effort!)

All of which leads to, if the above stats were used primarily in making our choices...

Most Valuable Player (Visalia City League, Men's D-Red, spring 2007): Frank Fletcher (105 offensive/defensive points)

And for our "special" categories...

Most Non-Appearances (regular members): Steve Stafford (4) (Laying it down for the theater! Four others were tied for second with 3 apiece: Paul Lawrence, Joaquin Perez, Art Tabacco, and Nelson Vieira. Some others also were considered, even though their physical bodies actually made it to the games!)

Perfect Attendance (regular members): Vern Amaro (All 10 games; a gold star to the manager!)

Most Memorable Performance: Frank Fletcher (Playing against Those Guys in the last game of the league season, Frank produced an offensive outburst that not only made him jump over several players ahead of him to snatch MVP honors once again, but produced 31 offensive/defensive points, which consisted of going 4 for 5, with 2 singles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 3 runs, 3 bonus points for getting 4 hits, an .800 BA, with 1 put-out in the outfield for a 1.000 fielding percentage. You just can't trust this guy when things seem so well-assured in the MVP race -- especially when I was the one leading the race up to the last game! All kidding aside, it couldn't have gone to a more deserving guy, who always gives it his all no matter what the game's situation....)

Greatest Increase in Batting Average from Last League (summer 2006; minimum 5 games): Vern Amaro (+.141, from .526 to .667) (Rich Avery came in second with a +.137 increase -- good job, buddy!)

Biggest "Plunge" in Batting Average from Last League (summer 2006; minimum 5 games): Paul Lawrence (-.314, from .618 to .304) (Mike Lujan came in second with a -.146 decrease; Frank Fletcher was third with a small -.057 decrease. To be honest, most everyone else increased their average this league, which says to me that better competition generally brings out the best in most people....)

Best Player Quote: "Say, could you possibly play next week, also?" (attributed to manager Vern Amaro, in his eternal quest to make sure we have a full roster every game!)

Best Acting Performance by a Player/Manager: Drum roll, please...Vern Amaro!!! (8th time in a row! A eight-peat! Incredible! Can this person run the career table! This is for impersonating, once again, the second baseman -- and spokesperson -- of a pretty darn-good softball team! By the way, were there any other eligible candidates on the team?)

"100 Points Plus Club": Vern Amaro (1994 T.C.L. 130 pts./1999 T.C.L. 109 pts./2001 T.C.L. 103 pts./2002 T.C.L. 140 pts./2003 T.C.L. 106 pts./2004 T.C.L. 110 pts./2005 T.C.L. 103 pts.); Rich Avery (2000 T.C.L. 129 pts./2004 V.C.L. 102 pts.); Wes Avery (2005 T.C.L. 129 pts.); Matt Beltran (1999 T.C.L. 104 pts.); Gordon Caudle (2000 T.C.L. 120 pts.); Kurt Chambers (2004 T.C.L. 100 pts.); Frank Fletcher (1994 T.C.L. 115 pts./1999 T.C.L. 169 pts. [record]/2000 T.C.L. 134 pts./2002 T.C.L. 146 pts./2003 T.C.L. 113 pts./2004 T.C.L. 111 pts./2004 V.C.L. 112 pts./2005 T.C.L. 134 pts./2005 V.C.L. 109 pts./2006 V.C.L. 111 pts./2007 V.C.L. 105 pts.); Gene Hitt (1994 T.C.L. 108 pts./2000 T.C.L. 138 pts./2002 T.C.L. 121 pts./2005 T.C.L. 100 pts./2005 V.C.L. 106 pts.); Mike Lujan (2005 V.C.L. 101 pts./2006 V.C.L. 113 pts.); Rene Regalado (1999 T.C.L. 109 pts./2000 T.C.L. 120 pts.); John Souza (1994 T.C.L. 122 pts.); Steve Stafford (2006 V.C.L. 106 pts.); Art Tabacco (2005 V.C.L. 116 pts.); Nelson Vieira (2002 T.C.L. 114 pts./2004 T.C.L. 112 pts./2006 T.C.L. 114 pts.)

Heavy Metal Softball rocks! And I'm not joking here. You've been a great bunch of guys to play side-by-side with, men! All kidding aside, I was really proud of our efforts, most especially the consistent team attitude displayed. I tip my cap off to all of you, as I know some of you come to play despite conflicting personal schedules, various aches and pains, balancing family and friends, and putting up with my managerial decisions. And so, in the meantime...keep rockin', guys -- and stay healthy for our next campaign!
Better Chemistry And Individual Play Evident In This Contest!

First, I want to thank all of the players who represented Heavy Metal Softball this weekend for their effort, help, and cooperation in making our third tournament of the year a very competitive one -- I feel we have something in us now that will carry the team to more wins than when we were floundering last year in CCASA Rec. Series play. Here are some final tournament statistics for those who actually visit our website and are truly interested in such things. So, without further adieu, I present some facts from this particular contest:

Knuckle Up Extreme Challenge Tournament Summary --

Tournament Record: 1-2 (we played better than our record indicates!)
1st game: Won 11-9 vs. Total Kaos
2nd game: Lost 8-9 vs. Good Friends
3rd game: Lost 8-9 vs. No Limit

Team Statistics (alphabetically):

Vern Amaro -- 2 for 10; .200 BA; 6 points.

Wes Avery -- 3 for 8; .375 BA; 22 points.
Aaron Dawes -- 7 for 8; .875 BA; 24 points.
Dennis Ellorin -- 1 for 8; .125 BA; 7 points.
Lee Garcia -- 2 for 8; .250 BA; 4 points.
Gene Hitt -- 4 for 10; .400 BA; 10 points.
Paul Lawrence -- 4 for 8; .500 BA; 22 points.

Steve Stafford -- 2 for 10; .200 BA; 19 points.
Bill Thrasher -- 3 for 6; .500 BA; 5 points.

Team Batting Average: .389 (42 for 108; we averaged 9 runs/game for the whole tournament. Again, we need to improve our team batting average, as this current one won't win tournaments -- something .500 or above might do the trick!)

Tournament MVP: Aaron Dawes (24 points -- "Sizzlin' Stick" award!)

2007 Season Statistics (alphabetically; all players):

Donny Aguiar -- 12 for 25; .480 BA; 38 points (2 tournaments)
Vern Amaro -- 13 for 30; .433 BA; 28 points (3 tournaments)
Rich Avery -- 7 for 26; .269 BA; 21 points (3 tournaments)

Paul Lawrence -- 21 for 32; .656 BA; 71 points (3 tournaments)
Mike Lujan -- 12 for 32; .375 BA; 36 points (3 tournaments)
Joaquin Perez -- 2 for 6; .333 BA; 8 points (1 tournament)
Randy Pilgrim -- 2 for 8; .250 BA; 6 points (1 tournament)
Matt Soares -- 4 for 8; .500 BA; 11 points (1 tournament)
Steve Stafford -- 8 for 29; .276 BA; 46 points (3 tournaments)
Bill Thrasher -- 3 for 6; .500 BA; 5 points (1 tournament)
Nelson Vieira -- 2 for 6; .333 BA; 8 points (1 tournament)

Final Comments: So far, Aaron Dawes leads the race for the "Batting Champions: Metal Men" perpetual award bat, based on his current batting average of .875. But remember, a player must have played in a minimum of 5 tournaments to earn this recognition -- something to think about when I ask everyone next time if they want to play some more ball in an upcoming tournament...!
Close Losses Spell Quick Exit -- Play Two And BBQ!

First, I want to thank all of the players who represented Heavy Metal Softball this weekend for their effort, help, and cooperation in making our first CCASA Rec. Series tournament of the year a somewhat successful effort -- in the sense that we were very competitive against some worthy teams. Here are some final tournament statistics for those who actually visit our website and are truly interested in such things. Unlike in the past, when I published an extensive summary of each tournament regardless of the outcome, I will reiterate here again that I will only do so if we achieve playoff status or have a winning record, with just a bare-bones tournament rundown for those events of little distinction. So, without further adieu, I present some facts from this particular contest:
