Heavy Metal Softball -- 2002 Edition...

Hello, Heavy Metal men!

Spring has finally arrived, and so has another men's softball season! Our team will remain virtually the same, with the exception of Roy Aguayo, my oldest friend, Marty Hawley, my nephew, and Greg King, our fastest player, leaving the team. Roy decided he'd like to concentrate on playing in the Senior League on Thursday nights; Marty never really committed himself last year and thus lost my confidence; Greg had already been asked to play on a team that plays the same night as us, and I respect his decision; we'll see him on the opposite side a couple of games this year. But Loyal Brown has returned from his injury last year to once again pitch for us; Wes Avery will supply a lot of power, hits, and runs potential; and Eddie Sousa will solidly protect homeplate in replacing Roy. Also, we will be playing in Division 3 on Wednesdays. I've recreated our schedule on the website in case someone somehow loses their paper copy. Let me know if there is any scheduling problem, especially if you can't make a game, by calling me as soon as possible. A new rule is that we can field at least eight players at game time, without forfeit. This leaves a team very thin, with little chance of winning, though a team can still play. We don't want to do that now, do we!

I'm looking forward to another competitive season in league play, especially with new competition to test us. Also, I hope to put our team on the tournament field from time to time this year, to further find out what we are made of. I have no doubts that everyone on this team would like that challenge. I'll talk to you more about tournaments at a later date.

So, get out your bags, shake the winter rust off, and let's get to doing it! Be checking in from time to time if you want up-to-date information on our team.

Remember, Unity! is our strength!
Do Numbers Always Tell The Tale?...

Do numbers always tell the tale? Some would agree, some not. Personally, I believe a person's body, mind, and spirit are more of a factor in a game than individual statistics. Does anyone play the game of softball by themselves? Who can measure the strength of a teammate's heart? What about a team's combined focus and chemistry? You can't put these on the team's stat-sheet. A win is always a great possibility when a team feels connected to each other, when each person puts out for the good of the team, whatever the situation that arises. Stat-chasing is for individuals; win-chasing is for teams. And a good team feels just as satisfied after a well-fought loss. Good teams lose with dignity.

So, for what it is worth, men, here are the 2001 season (Division 2)final individual stats (updated after each game).

Games 1 thru 10 (final game):

Roy Aguayo -- 8 for 26; 1 walk; 6 singles; 1 double; 1 triple; 3 RBIs; 4 runs; .308 BA; 26 points.

Loyal Brown -- 2 for 5; 1 single; 1 double; .400 BA; 3 points.

Gordon Caudle -- 7 for 21; 5 walks; 7 singles; 7 RBIs; 4 runs; .333 BA; 34 points.

Frank Fletcher -- 17 for 32; 3 walks; 12 singles; 1 triple; 4 HRs; 11 RBIs; 18 runs; 3 bonus points; .531 BA; 95 points.

Lee Garcia -- 9 for 26; 3 walks; 8 singles; 1 triple; 14 RBIs; 7 runs; .346 BA; 56 points.

Marty Hawley -- 0 for 5; 1 walk; 1 RBI; 1 run; .000 BA; 5 points.

Gene Hitt -- 15 for 30; 4 walks; 13 singles; 1 double; 1 triple; 6 RBIs; 13 runs; .500 BA; 60 points.

Greg King -- 11 for 26; 4 walks; 10 singles; 1 double; 4 RBIs; 11 runs; 3 bonus points; .423 BA; 49 points.

Joe Machado -- 11 for 28; 1 walk; 8 singles; 2 doubles; 1 triple; 9 RBIs; 7 runs; .393 BA; 48 points.

Nelson Vieira -- 16 for 33; 11 singles; 1 double; 2 triples; 2 HRs; 11 RBIs; 13 runs; .485 BA; 75 points.

2001 Season MVP (Division 2) -- Vernon Amaro (103 points)

Previous MVPs (from past seasons) -- Gene Hitt (1990 season -- 1st place trophy; by vote); Frank Fletcher (1991 season -- 1st place trophy; by vote); Vernon Amaro (1994 season, 1st half -- 1st place trophy; by vote -- given to my brother, Jerry Dean, our pitcher, whom I believed deserved it, also); John Sousa (1994 season, 2nd half -- 1st place trophy; by vote); Frank Fletcher (1995 season -- 1st place trophy; by vote); Frank Fletcher (1999 season -- team received 1st place; 169 points); Gene Hitt (2000 season -- team received 1st place; 138 points)

A plaque will be created to honor our past MVPs, engraved with their names, and it will be given to future MVPs to hold onto until it is presented again. In the past, first, second, and third place votes, with numerical value, were given to determine the team's MVP; we can still go back to that. Defense and leadership are also determinants of that kind of selection. As of now, however, points from the offensive categories are means of selection. I will be asking our current team members how they want to go, and, after that, the method will be a permanent process.

When Heavy Metal rocks, the win-music can be loud and sweet. But, remember, there's no "I" in team! Staying centered is for the team's good; staying self-centered is for the individual's benefit. I have not seen any hint of the latter on our team, past or present. Strive to stay centered, focused on the moment. There is such a thing as trying too hard, especially when thinking about a missed opportunity in a game. Keep this in mind when this happens -- "Let it flow, then let it go." Being an emotional player, it has worked for me. Let it work for you (and watch those stats go up!)

Now, let's go to rockin' on Wednesdays, Division 3, this year! Last year was only the second time our team has had a losing record in league play, and we've had many, many firsts. Let's go get another, men....
