On April 27th a group of wrestlers traveled to Manheim Township High School in Pennsylvania to compete in freestyle wrestling. The big match of the day was South Bound Brook’s 170 lb. 8th grader Chris Konyz versus a 255 lb. Manheim wrestler. In a bout for the championship Chris gave a great effort and almost turned the behemoth, before falling victim to a head lock. McGarrett Galvan(3rd) and Stephen Lawrence (4th) also placed in the junior high heavyweight division at Manheim. Gabriel Gleason, Nick Murray and Andrew Flanagan won individual titles, while Jason Gregor placed a strong third. RICHMOND, Ind.- A high school wrestling coach who bit the head off a live sparrow at a party with his team served community service rather than face an animal cruelty charge. Aron Bright, a coach and history teacher at Avon High School, could have been sentenced to a maximum one year in prison and a $5,000.00 fine. Bright served a two-week suspension without pay from the school and was suspended as a reserve Cloverdale Police officer. He admitted to biting off the head off the sparrow December 28th at his parents’ home in Centerville while he and some assistant coaches, along with 15 varsity wrestlers, were attending a two-day meet nearby. Bright has said that the incident was “innocent fun” intended to motivate his team. Tell the Sparrow that Coach Ozzy!
