RAYMOND TROMBADORE PASSES AWAY

Posted by Martin Gleason at May 20, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Borough of Bound Brook and State of New Jersey lost a great citizen on May 8, 2002 with the passing of Raymond R. Trombadore. He and his wife Anne are the parents of one of the finest wrestling families in the history of Bound Brook High School. Bob Trombadore’75 was the first son to wrestle for Bound Brook winning a district championship in 1975. He went on to attend and compete at the United States Naval Academy. Dave Trombadore’77 also won a district championship for Bound Brook in 1975 and went to on to compete and attend Princeton University. Dave and Bob actually had to wrestle each other in a dual meet while in college. Tom Trombadore’79 won a district and region title, and placed fourth in the state of New Jersey at 141 lbs. He had one of the greatest days in BB wrestling history at the region tournament. He defeated an undefeated Larry Nisovaccia of J.P. Stevens in the semi-finals and then majored eventual State Champion Tom Gibble of Hunterdon Central in the finals. Tom went on to attend Stanford University. Matt Trombadore’84 was the final installment of the family to wrestle at Bound Brook and placed second in the district and fourth in Region 5. Matt lost to State Champion Derek Capana in his district final. Mr. Trombadore was one of the most respected attorneys in New Jersey and lead the way on many ethic issues nationally. He is survived by his wife Ann and another son Bill. The Trombadores have one daughter Maryann who was a stand-out cross country athlete at BBHS and attended Stanford University. God Bless the Trombadores!

BBHS SCHEDULE CHANGE FOR 02-03

Posted by Martin Gleason at May 20, 2002 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
After a successful ten year run, Bound Brook High School will not attend the Ridgefield Tournament. The tournament is no longer in existence, so the team will wrestle at the Southern Regional Invitational. This 16 team tournament will be a substantial upgrade in competition for BBHS. Top twenty teams Delsea, Old Bridge, and host Southern Regional participate, as well as, group four schools such as Brick Township and Woodbridge. Surely, this will be a great early season test and is the first step in upgrading the high school schedule as this season’s young team matures. Jason Gregor is the only returning junior next season.
The spring has arrived and with it the dedication and desires the members of the Bound Brook wrestling program come into view. Unlike most programs, Bound Brook does not hibernate during the off-season (although many BBHS wrestlers do). Those who choose to participate are exposed two different types of wrestling called freestyle and greco roman. These are the styles of wrestling contested in the Olympics. Most astute wrestling observers note that developement in these styles is vital to becoming a champion at the highest level. Those words are true at Bound Brook, as all the current college wrestlers have competed at the Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. This is the largest wrestling tournament in the world and every major college wrestling coach attends the tournament in July. BBHS has had three place winners in the last four years. Chris Knapp (6th), Aleksey Sharapov (8th) and Andrey Sharapov (6th) all attained All-American status. Only Blair Academy has more All-Americans than BBHS in the last five years. This season, although many of the high school wrestlers have been too timid to expose themselves to the Olympic style, a few BBHS wrestlers have had success in these two styles. Freshman Andrew Flanagan recently won the freestyle and greco roman state titles. He pinned his way through freestyle states and at the greco states he beat the second ranked wrestler in the country, Gregg Romano of Blair. By winning these tournaments he is automatically named to Team New Jersey and has the right to participate at the National Tournament in July. Flanagan also earned a spot last year, but was injured at training camp and did not compete. He is a strong favorite to earn All-American honors this July. BBHS had another double placer as sophomore David Shubick placed third in both styles. In freestyle, David beat Chirs Kelly of Delaware Valley, who was a District finalist. David has earned a right for a wrestle-off for a position on Team New Jersey. His placement is impressive because despite having only two years experience, he is beating life long wrestlers and playing baseball for BBHS as the same time! David exemplifies commitment to excellence that coaches love. Other future BBHS wrestlers who placed were Nicholas Murray who placed 3rd in freestyle and 2nd in greco. Gabe Gleason who placed second in freestyle. Gabriel lost to Brandon Rolnick who is the grandson of former Governor Livingston wrestling coach and athletic director Mike Sorrentino. The more things change, the more they stay the same! Another important tournament upcoming is the Northeast Region at the end of May at East Stroudsburg University.
