Dickie Fernández grew up in Marbella, Spain for 18 years and has been living in the United States since 1989. He started masters swimming in 1998 and joined Nova Masters in 2006. As a masters swimmer, Dickie has been ranked twice in FINA’s Top 10 world ranking in the 200 meters freestyle (long course in 2005 and short course in 2006), he has earned six Spanish masters swimming national records, has won 25 Spanish masters swimming national championships and has been ranked number 1 in Spain in the 100 and 200 meters freestyle from 2001 through 2009.

In 2003, he started coaching masters swimming for Ford Aquatics Masters in Tucson, Arizona under the supervision of Head Coach Jim Stites. While coaching in Tucson he was fortunate to be a guest coach with the Univerisity of Arizona swim team, focusing on Rick DeMont’s coaching approach to sprinting workouts and the positive team energy within the group. Dickie joined the Nova Masters coaching staff in 2007 and is actively involved with Head Coach Mike Collins and the rest of Nova Masters coaching staff in making Nova Masters a better and more fun masters swimming experience for its members.

Here in Irvine, Dickie practices civil engineering for a large engineering consulting company. He travels often to Marbella and is also a member of Club Natación Mijas (Spain), the masters swim club with which he started swimming in 1998.
