Brian Sellers
The Pennsbury junior, who took fifth place at states, finished the year 44-6 to boost his career record to 88-18.

Courier Times
FAIRLESS HILLS - Brian Sellers had a fine 2000-01 wrestling season, but it was a little unfulfilling.
Sellers, of Pennsbury High School, qualified for the PIAA Class AAA Tournament as a sophomore. He went 1-2 at states, just missing a top-eight finish and a medal.
Sellers entered his junior season intent on earning a medal.
"I definitely wanted to place since I was just a match away last year," he said.
The road to Hershey was a little bumpy, as Sellers had to fight his way through the 112-pound losers bracket at the Southeast Regional.
Once at Hersheypark Arena, Sellers shined. He went 4-2, losing decisions to opponents who would go on to place third and fourth. Sellers ended his season by pinning Canon-McMillan's Chad Maggi to capture fifth place.
Sellers stood on the awards platform a happy young man.
"It was a great experience knowing you're one of the best wrestlers in the state," he said.
For his standout performance, Sellers is the Courier Times Wrestler of the Year.
Sellers, 17, finished the year 44-6. That tied Chuckie's Connor's 1996 school record for victories in a season.
His career record is 88-18. He could reach 100 wins by December and has a shot at the all-time school record for victories. Connor and Kip Kiefer (class of 1992) each won 130 bouts.
Sellers would also like to join Kiefer and Connor as state champions. He'd at least like to improve on this year's showing.
"I'd like to place higher. I'd like to get closer and closer to the top," he said.
Sellers, of Yardley, would also like to repeat his sophomore season, when he swept the Section One, District One North and regional titles. This year, he won sectionals, but settled for second at districts and third at regionals.
Sellers, an A-B student, was a key part of Pennsbury's march to the Suburban One League Patriot Division and district dual meet crowns and the state semifinals. The Falcons shared the division title in 2001, meaning they'll be going for a threepeat in '03.
Pennsbury coach Joe Kiefer said Sellers showed a lot of character by choosing to compete at 112, knowing that was the weight class where he'd run into a two-time PIAA champ in Henderson's Jermaine Jones and a former state placewinner in Neshaminy's Jon Denny.
As a senior, Sellers will also be expected to show some leadership.
Kiefer said Sellers has made a name for himself in Pennsylvania wrestling.
"Once you're a placewinner, you become a target for everyone else. They're training to beat you," the coach said.
Pennsbury Matures Into Team of the Year

With a team full of freshmen and sophomores, Pennsbury wrestling coach Joe Kiefer thought he had the makings of something special two years ago.
Kiefer watched Brian Sellers, Joe Bowman, Pat Frain and Dan Vagnozzi, all freshmen at the time, show flashes of promise. This season, they fulfilled that promise.
Led by that core group, along with senior Jon Schimpf, junior Bob Speer and sophomore Joe Bergen, Pennsbury dominated dual-meet competition this season. The Falcons are The Inquirer's suburban wrestling team of the year.
Pennsbury experienced a historic year, winning a school-record 22 matches against just one loss. The Falcons' only dual-match loss came against PIAA Class AAA state team champion Easton in the state semifinals.
The Falcons won the District 1 Class AAA dual-meet title for the first time since 1995. They are a young team that will lose just one senior, 160-pounder Schimpf, next season.
"We knew we had a very good team, but it's always difficult to predict whether or not everyone will stay healthy," Kiefer said. "This is a team that could do even more next year, but you're faced with the same type of problems - keeping everyone healthy, everyone academically eligible, and making sure everyone is in a different weight class."
Sellers, a junior, will return next season as one of the area's best lightweights. Also returning are Bowman (40-11 at 140 pounds), Frain (30-15 at 171), Vagnozzi (28-12 at 119), and Bergen (30-11 at heavyweight).
Sophomore 152-pounder Bill Bramwell (8-5) filled in well in some key meets, and Speer (5-5), a 189-pounder, placed fifth at the District 1-North tournament. Pennsbury also will have freshman Ben Rees (23-13) back at 130-140. Rees was fourth in Section 1 at 135 pounds.
With that much returning talent, Pennsbury will be the team to beat again next season.
"We'd certainly set that as a goal," Kiefer said. "We did finish in the top four at the dual-meet state championship, and we took nine kids to the District 1-North tournament, and only one was a senior. We feel real good about next year. But the challenges are there, and when you reach the top, you become a target."
Notes: Brian Sellers was named to the All-Inquirer second team, while Joe Kiefer and Joe Bowman were conspicuously absent from the honors list.
