THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Closing out the 2009 season:

The most memorable moments. The 2009 season was another great season of growth as several new faces joined the club while a couple of others returned after injuries had them on the shelf for most of 2008.  Matt joined the team from Bradford while Brandon made the jump from Select and Jake also joined the team.  Trevor and John returned to the team.  John had not been part of the program since Mosquito.  After some challenging negotiations Josh returned to Shortstop for his second season.  Injuries put Trevor out for the season in early June.  Ryan was soon playing at a high level after being out most of 2008.  Christian made his recovery after some serious surgery and he was beginning to round into the shape that made him a YSBA All-Star.  Dane spent a significant period of time with Team Ontario but when he returned Barrie had a pretty strong 1-2-3 starting rotation made with Graham and Matt putting in several sparkling performances.  Dane and Graham were called-up to augment the Major Midget pitching staff at the OBAs and carried a huge load and resulted in Barrie capturing the provincial championship.  What follows are the games that really highlight the boys at their best. Click on the links and count down the heart stopping moments from the summer gone by. Here are the most memorable games and moments for 2009:

Highlight 5: Barrie 11 - Etobicoke 7.  The Red Sox regroup and the bats come alive putting an end to a mid-season slide.  After dropping several consecutive games the Red Sox hit a low in inning one committing four errors as Etobicoke posts 5 runs. The Red Sox defence bounced back and the pitching held strong as the boys pounded out several long balls on route to a tremendous recovery. The boys would score runs in all but one inning.

Highlight 4: Barrie 2 - North York 0.  A near perfect game.  The starting pitching was outstanding and North York couldn't touch the relief pitching either as the defence was solid in the best regular season game of the year.

Highlight 3: Barrie 2 - Burlington 1. The Red Sox raise their game in the Mississauga Tournament backed once again by solid starting pitching.  Matt seemed to do it all while waiting for the boys to get the big hit to blow it open.

Highlight 2: Woodslee 5 - Barrie 2. A semi-final thriller. The Red Sox hang close in a battle with the team crowned the best in Ontario.

Highlight 1: Barrie 2 - Whitby 1. A shortened bench goes up against Whitby in the London Tournament semi-final.  This was a bit of a grudge match but the boys hold on to move into the finals of the London Tournament.

    Tournament Details

Mississauga North (3-5 July) It was an outstanding weekend of baseball as the boys continued to raise their level of play.  The team got out to a slow start in game one but began to find the groove as the weekend progressed.  Game 2 was a nail biter as the pitching and defence was solid.  The base-on-balls, which haunted the team in Game 1, almost came back again in the later stages of the game but the boys held on.  In Game 3 the bats came alive and this set up a match in Game 4 which was by far the best game of the year to date.  Outstanding defence, pitching and timely hitting resulted in a great game to close out Mississauga.  Congratulations to Woodslee, after knocking Barrie out in Game 4 they went on to win the tournament.  Woodslee kept the outfield on their toes the entire game making  9 fly ball outs.  Overall it was great team effort highlighted by Matt's pitching in Game 3 (5 shut out innings and 8 of the first 9 outs of the game were by strikeout) and his hitting throughout the weekend (5 for 7).  Jake also got hot at the plate going 4 for 7.  Here's the game-by-game results:
    Game 1: Brampton Royals 10 - Barrie 5
    Game 2: Barrie 2 - Burlington 1
    Game 3: Barrie 7 - Whitby "AAA"  2
    Game 4: Woodslee 5 - Barrie 2

17-19 July Southwest London. What a tournament!  The boys come close as the Red Sox advance to the finals of the London tournament behind some masterful pitching and very solid defence. Missing both Dane and then Josh, following a game one injury, the team was without two of the core players that lead the team in Mississauga.  The remaining boys picked it up thanks to some very solid pitching and then outstanding defence.  The boys gave up a total of 10 runs over 5 games and that is pretty outstanding.  The infield, outfield and catching was all solid.  On the mound Graham set the tone with a great performance in Game 1 and the remaining pitchers did the job leading up to the finale.  At the plate there were several players who came through in critical moments, not the least of which was Cody who was the spark that ignited the rally, which got the team into the semi-final.  Honorable mention goes to John, Ryan, Adam, Eddie and Cole who also seemed to be able to get on base with great regularity.  Despite the weather, it was a great tournament.

    Game 1: Barrie 6 - North Toronto 1

    Game 2: North York 4 - Barrie 1

    Game 3: Barrie 13 - Whitby "AA" 0

    Game 4 - Semi-Finals: Barrie 2 - Whitby "AAA" 1

    Game 5 - Finals:  North York 4 - Barrie 2

7-9 August - YSBA Championships (Vaughan). OThe Red Sox exit early from the YSBA Championships, going out two straight.  It was a tough way to loose but the red Sox pitching did not hold up surrendering 21 wlaks over 11 innings.  At the plate there were several opportunities missed and this came back to haunt the team on the scoreboard.
