Saturday 20th January 2007. Kilroot Rec 3 v 0 Whitehead Eagles @ Beltoy Kilroot scorers David Kidd Nicky Sharples David Armstrong. This local derby started of in atrocities weather, gales, rain and sleet not conducive to any form of constructive football from either team in fact a lottery in progress. Kilroot broke the deadlock on 31 minutes, McKinty, Nicky Sharples, and John Mathers all had a hand in providing the opener for David Kidd with a rasping shot from 15 yards, 1-0. 32 minutes Whitehead should have been level when a poor clearance from the Kilroot keeper was collected by an opposition forward but Gary McClune redeemed himself with a brave save at the feet of same. 44 minutes David Armstrong should have doubled Kilroot’s lead but shoot wide when well placed. The second half weather wise started without the gales and the rain that had dogged the first half. 50 minutes a Nicky Sharples shot was tipped over the bar by the visiting keeper from the resulting corner Darren McKinty blasted high and wide. 70 minutes Kilroot put the game beyond doubt when Nicky Sharples retrieved the ball from the bye line and from the sharpest of angles gave the Whitehead keeper no chance, 2-0. 75 minute Kilroot manager Jim Pherson took of little pocket rocket John Mathers and replaced him with Marl Latimer. 76 minute another substitution by Kilroot the totally ineffective James Pherson being replaced by Phillip Glover. 80 minutes and a peach of a goal started by the Kilroot keeper’s long punt wide on the right instantly controlled by Mark Latimer crossed to Nicky Sharples who rolled it into the path of David Armstrong to side foot into the Whitehead goals a goal of sheer simplicity, 3-0. 85 minutes Gary Mulholland replaced David Armstrong and could have got on the score sheet with a rasping shot but someone had shifted the nets. Saturday 20th January 2007 3rd round Templeton Cup Kilroot Rec II 5 v 4 Downshire YM II A, E, T. Kilroot scorers, Chris Armstrong David Gillespie Gary McCahon Ricky Coulter Neill Hall Kilroot II emerged as victors in extra time in this epic battle to progress to the Quarter Finals of the Templeton Cup. And what a victory it was, Kilroot without a win over Downshire II in all competitive matches to date were the under dogs. 7 Minutes Kilroot in front from a long ball from home keeper found Chris Armstrong who scored easily, 1-0. 15 minutes Downshire were level from the order of the day the long ball most productive. , 1-1. 25 minutes guest player Ricky Coulter supplied a gross ball for young David Gillespie to side foot into the empty goals, 2-1. 40 minutes Downshire level again from a cheaply conceded free kick 25 yards out Phillip Brownlee no chance, 2-2. 50 minutes Downshire in front a penalty conceded by the unfortunate John Smiley easily converted 2-3. 55 minutes the Downshire keeper made a great save from Gary McCahon. 60 minutes all square again this time a Kilroot corner from Chris Armstrong found its way to Gary McCahon for a simple tap in, 3-3. 80 minutes guest player Ricky Coulter Blasted Kilroot in front with an unstoppable shot, 4-3. With 10n seconds to go Kilroot in the next round not so another blunder by the calamities captain gifted Downshire the equaliser, 4-4. Extra time two halves of 10 minutes each the first period Kilroot keeper Phillip Brownlee suffering from double vision had to be replaced by Darren White who is normally away home at this time. With 5 minutes remaining of extra time Kilroot got a free kick 25 yards out Ricky Coulter cracked his shot of the cross bar and Neill Hall was first to react to the rebound to put Kilroot into the quarter finals, 5-4. A truly entertaining match full of goals twists and turns a credit to both teams and up and coming referee Jim Holden. Saturday January 2007-01-13 Bangor Rangers 1v 2 Kilroot Rec @ Sportsplex Kilroot scorers Nicky Sharples David Kidd On a day like today with Irish Cup matches cancelled due to the inclement weather Kilroot went to Bangor Rangers and performed a Houdini act coming away with three points overcoming both the weather and the home team. Playing with a gusting cross field wind first half Kilroot worked a master stroke commencing with Glen Crawford, David Kidd, and Simon Hamilton to Nicky Sharples to use the wind in directing his 25 yarder into the top corner of the Rangers goal, great goal, 0-1. David Kidd had a few free kicks which the gales weren’t kind to. James Pherson and Darren McKinty played in Nicky Sharples but the strong wind took the ball away from him. Bangor Rangers were restricted to long range shots in the first period none of which bothered the Kilroot keeper. Second half the Wind changed into the faces of the Kilroot team defending deep and relaying on sharp counter attacks caught the Rangers on the hop 55 minutes David Armstrong played a super ball down the middle David Kidd took advantage of the hesitant centre half and keeper to plant the ball inside the goal nudging the post on the way in, 0-2. 60 minutes Kilroot under massive pressure were reduced to 10 men when Captain Simon Hamilton had to leave the field of play for running repairs which took 10 minutes. 65 minutes on another counter Kilroot’s James Pherson starting his first match for some time after injury twinkled toed his way down the right hand side of the pitch got in a good cross but John Mathers just couldn’t reach it. 70 minutes Simon Hamilton returned to the match after magic hands Harry worked on him and Mark Latimer replaced James Pherson. 75 minutes Philip Glover replaced David Kidd. 76 minutes Kilroot’s David Armstrong had a good shout for a penalty when halted by a two feet tackle in the Rangers box; referee didn’t see it that way and awarded a free to Rangers. 78 minutes Rangers using the thunderous rain and sleet as cover clawed a goal back from a close header which the Kilroot keeper had no knowledge off, 1-2. 80 minutes Kilroot had to make another sub when Glen Crawford was injured being replaced by Gary Mulholland. Kilroot defended bravely in the final minutes of this close encounter to take all the points. Albion star II 3 v 1 Kilroot rec II @ Mallusk Kilroot scorer OG. This match switched from Blanchflower pitches to Mallusk. Kilroot seconds turned up in spirit but not in any physical form. Kilroot were undefeated from the second match of the season away back in September 06 today they surrendered to easily to a very good Albion Star side and ironically they could have been two goals up in the first five minutes young Glen Maculey and not so young Gary McCahon should have scored from great chances. Kilroot only one goal down at half time with no prospect of replay Manager Russell Wallace replaced Neill Hall with Colin Adair expecting a lot from the guest player. 60 minutes Kilroot’s Glen Maculey was replaced by Andy Mearns 70 minutes Kilroot replaced Darren white a player who has not fulfilled his potential with Andy Murry. To add injury to insult it was Albion Star who scored Kilroot’s goal in the 83rd minute from a David Gillespie cross. Best for Kilroot keeper Phillip Brownlee. Saturday 6th January 2007-01-06 4th round Junior Shield Kilroot rec 6 v 1 Drumbo @ Beltoy Kilroot scorers David Armstrong (2) John Mathers David Kidd Darren McKINTY Nicky Sharples Kilroot one up in 6 minutes corner ball by David Kidd Nicky Sharples shot come pass onto John Mathers head no mistake. 1-0. 12 minutes a John Mathers shot was well saved by visiting keeper. 17 minutes a mistake in the Kilroot rearguard let in Gavin Clarke but Kilroot keeper saved with his feet. 33 minutes Kilroot keeper made another good save and started of a counter attack with his long throw out that found john Mathers he set up David ARMSTRONG TO HAMMER HOME a SUPER SHOT TO MAKE AMENDS FOR AN EARLIER MISS. 2-0. Second half it was one way traffic Kilroot increasing the lead when Simon Hamilton who was carrying an injury robbed the ball of a defender went across the pitch beating all in front of him even fouled a couple of times in the box but stayed on his feet to supply David Armstrong with an clear cut chance to get his second goal and Kilroot third. 3-0. 63 minutes Simon Hamilton finally had to retire being replaced by Philip Glover. 64 minutes a kick in the teeth for Kilroot Drumbo’s Gareth Parkinson rose like an eagle to head home from a corner ball. 3-1 67 minutes Darren McKINTY FOUND HIMSELF CLEAR 35 YARDS OUT RAN AND RAN THEN UNLEASHED ASHOT WHICH CAN ONLY BE DES`CRIBED AS MAGIC WAND SHOT FOOLED THE KEEPER AND ALL WATCHING WHEN THE BALL SOARED OVERHEAD AND INTO THE GOALS. 4-1 68 MINUTES John Mathers injury caught up with him he was replaced by James Pherson. 77 minutes Kilroot’s David ARMSTRONG WAS REPLACED BY MARK Latimer. 78 minutes David Kidd picked up a half clearance and fired it past a bewildered keeper. 5-1 86 minutes Gary Mulholland playing his first full game this season played a magnificent ball into the path of Nicky Sharples he beat a defender and rounded the goalkeeper to add goal number six.
