Greenisland 2nds 2 v 1 Kilroot 2nds. The second round of the Templeton cup away to Greenisland O B 2nds, two leagues above Kilroot 2nds, but a close enough match. Up until G/island scored in the 30 min it was a scrappy game with neither team playing to their best. G/islands goal a shot from the 18 yards out took a wicket deflection of a Kilroot defender, McNiece Kilroots keeper no chance.1-0. In the last 15 mins of first half Kilroots tucker Hammond had two good opportunitys to level the score but shot wide with one and the second into keepers arms. G/island were unlucky when a shot hit Kilroots post. Half Time. 55 mins Brown created an opening for guess who yes tucker but once again shot wide. Kilroot enjoying a fair share of the play with Calvert, McKinty, Mackers and Phearson all pushing forward.70 mins the very tired mackers replaced by Philip Burch, Philip who i hear you say.75 mins and it happened Brown again the provider for tucker who this time made no mistake from 20 yards,1-1. Cairns and Phearson squandered half chances. Kilroot pushing forward looking for a winner caught on counter attack, a long clearance From G/island defence, Kilroot exposed at back McNiece could do nothing, 2-1. In the last mins of game Adams cleared a goal bound shot of Kilroots line. Lost the game but not overwhelmed by a team two divisions above them. Two Kilroot players owe the ref a big thank you,McNiece and the outspoken McKinty, both on another day could have got their marching orders. The ref a member of the G/island club was both courteous and impartial and a credit to his club. Best for Kilroot Calvert,Adams, and McKinty. Kilroot Team. Gary McNiece, David Adams, Harper Calvert, Alan Manderson, Andrew McIlwrath[70] Philip Burch, Graham McCann, Gavin Cairns, Darren McKinty, James Phearson, Thomas Hammond, and David Brown. Kilroot into second round Junior Shield

Kilroot 4 v 0 Lower Shankill. It was always going to be a tough game home to Lower Shankill in Junior Shield but how they can call Football what spectators witnessed at Beltoy is beyond me. A dream start for Kilroot in the first minute a long clearance from Priestly, Donald collected ball on 18 yard line shot, Shankill keeper got a foot to it but Kennedy who was following in drove the rebound into net,1-0. With ten minutes gone Puskey had a touch of verbal diarrhoea the ref took a note of it. At this stage of game a lot of loose boots were flying around thankfully with little or no contact.Kilroot created and missed chances. 35 minutes in another confrontation a shankill player squared up to dummy after a hard but fair tackle the out come both were booked, strange one. In 36 minutes it happened Kilroots playmaker McConnell was the subject of a HORRENDOUS tackle lucky enough not to have any breaks and the culprit was justly red carded. 42 minutes and Kilroot finally score no two,Clawson, and Kennedy created space for Donald to walk round Shankill keeper.2-0 Half Time. In the 48 minute McConnell the subject of the tackle in the first half had to retire from game a sore man,his replacement McClean. 52 minutes a one two Kennedy and Higgins with the latter into keepers arms. Kilroot in total command of game but still a little warry of their opponents. Shankill confined to the odd counter had a couple of half chances when only two nil down but Priestly was alert to all forays into Kilroots area. 60 minutes a strong tackle by Mathers to win ball passed to McClean who in turn picked out Kennedy to score his second and Kilroots third goal.3-0. 75 minutes a corner kick to kilroot , McClean took corner, Hamilton shoot, Keeper saved and Kennedy pounced to score his third and Kilroots fourth.4-0. 80 minutes Meek came on for Higgins who had worked very hard. The game turned out an easy stroll for Kilroot after overcoming some fierce tackling and verbal abuse. Kilroot showed maturity and self disipline great all round team performance, a brillant hat trick from Kennedy, and an out standing game from Mathers. Team. Gorden Priestly, Gary Clawson, Colin McElnea, Stewart Hamilton, Paul Mathers, Robert Dummigin, Niel McConnell,[48] Steven McClean, Colin Adair, Paul Higgins [80] Philip Meek, Robert Kennedy, Stephen Donald. other sub Stephen Green not use

Posted by Gary Millar at Sep 29, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Visitors at Beltoy, Albion Star 2nds, first season in N A F L, a lot to learn about discipline. A throw in to Star in 3 mins into Kilroots box ,the unfortunate G McCann turned ball into own nets 20 mins Kilroot on level terms, a corner ball taken by Hammond turned back across net by McConnell for Clawson to score,1-1. 21 mins McCann had to go of injured, on came Kinnon. Kilroot were still on top of game with much quicker and more direct play but nothing to show for it. Half Time. 60 mins and Gary Millar heading for Aussie land on Mon 1/10/01. replaced by short runner S Donald. 75 mins Kilroot in front at last, Clawson getting no two with a fortuitous shot from 20 yards.2-1.In the last 15 mins Kilroot were put under increasing pressure, verbal, and physical and a lot of unsavery incidents on the blind side of the ref, but to Kilroots credit they stood firm ,did not get involved and could have won by a bigger margin.S Donald, D Brown,N McConnell, and J Phearson all missed half chances but the clearest of chances fell to J Phearson in the shape of a penalty on 90 mins,he hit the post with it. Kilroot Team Gary McNiece,David Adams,Alan Manderson, Harper Calvert[c] Neil McConnell, Graham McCann,Sub,Stephen Kinnon,David Brown.Thomas Hammond,Gary millar,Sub,Stephen Donald,James Phearson,Gary Clawson,Other Sub not used.Craig Wright.
