Posted by Gary Millar at Nov 3, 2001 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Away to Bloomfield at Cairnshill playing fields in the second round of Cochran/Curry cup.A team from 2.b. a difficult game at best and how do we approach the game,we give them a FOUR goal start, strange but true. 21 mins one down,30 mins two down,35 mins from a free kick out side Kilroot's box, came of the crossbar high into the air,a Bloomfield forward unchallanged headed into net for the third goal.3-0. There were a few bright moments in Kilroot's first half display, a snap shot from b, a, which the Bloomfield keeper had to react sharpley to turn round post for a corner. Tucker was unlucky with another snap shot, home keeper well positioned . Half Time. The second half had to be better than the first with the kilroot's players ears still ringing from a severe rollicking from Chubs. 54 mins and number four for Bloomfield resulting from a poor kick out from Kilroot's keeper.4-0. 55 mins and the reappearance of the prodical son Mr R Kennedy after another injury scare when it was reputed that he lost a tenner in the Royal Oak on friday night, thankfully it was only a rumer,he came on for Tucker who was felling the pace of game. 60 mins Adair came on for Clawson who was not sparkling as bright as normal.61 mins, a delightful ball over the top from Higgy to expolite Ecky's pace and opening the scoring for Kilroot.4-1. 70 mins and a super three man move,Higgy, B- A and Kennedy finished it of.4-2. 80 mins and the unsung hero McFly made his introduction to the game at the expence of B-A. McFly made a couple of deep croses but nobody at back post to take advantage of them. From a throw in man of the match Stew Hamilton hit base of post. Kilroot got a comprrehensive lesson from a supier team on the day, Kilroot Team. Gorden Priestly, David Adams, Robert Dummigan, Neil McConnell, Colin McElnea, Stew Hamilton, Gary Clawson,60mins [Colin Adair] Stephen McClean, Paul Higgins, Stephen Donald,80mins[Graham McCann, Thomas Hammond,55mins [Robert Kennedy]. We went away to win at home?

Posted by Gary Millar at Oct 27, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
A home match away from home it sounds odd but as the season unfolds it will become clear to the uninitiated. At Mallusk, playing Drumbo it should have been easy, not so with players unavailable, players missing goal scoring chances even a penalty it became a difficult and tedious game. The only event in the first 15 minutes that aroused the [big crowd] was poor David Adams on the receiving end of a clash of heads, result a split eye.D McKinty replaced him. The next 15 minutes all huff and puff with nothing constructive from either side. On 30 minutes a Drumbo defender made a complete hash of a clearance, B A onto it like a flash and from 18 yards the Drumbo keeper no chance.1-0. Play continued with this negative approach, kick and rush .On 45 minutes Drumbo were awarded a corner and i dont need to tell you what happened next.1-1. Half Time. 55 minutes Kilroot got a corner, Slick hard and low into opponents box Clawson with a clean strike sent it into top right hand corner.2-1. 70 minutes McClean on a mazy run beat two defenders into Drumbo box, unceremoniously sent flying into the air.The culprit was sent of and Higgins missed with the resulting penalty. 78 minutes and the second sending of, young Mathers for his second bookable offence was sent to the changing rooms by ex Irish League Referee F Hughes. The remaining 10 minutes it was all Kilroot with Higgins.McKinty,Slick,Hammond and Dummy all coming close with shots. Two more vaulable points and a continueation of the wining secquance. Well done Kilroot. Kilroot Team. Gorden Priestly, Paul Mathers, Colin McElnea, Gary Clawson ,Stephen McClean, Thomas Hammond, Neil McConnell, Robert Dumming, David Adams, 15 mins[Darren McKinty] Stephen Donald and Paul Higgins. Other subs not used.

Visitors to Beltoy Grange Rgs 2nds were much happier with a point than Kilroot were. Kilroot had the best of first ten minutes with Cairns opening the scoring, a screamer from 20 yards into top corner after good work by Manderson and Brown. 1-0. Grange came more into game after Kilroot scored and equalize on 25 minutes, Kilroot had three chances to clear the ball and even D Brown in attempting to assist Kilroots keeper R Brown failed to keep it out.1-1. Grange on a high still pressing forward had a goal bound effort cleared of Kilroots line by Cairns who was having a busy afternoon. The game developed into a physical battle with lots of effort and little skill, the exception being Cairns who sometimes over did it and Beefy who was majestic in the air and not bad on the ground as well. Will be a good player when he gets fit. Half Time.1-1. 50 minutes , a Grange player had to retire from game with a bad cut after a clash of heads. Kilroot were slowly taking control of the game but unable to score. Grange were confined to the odd counter attack and a draw looked very much on cards. 70 minutes and McIlwrath who had two sleepless nights, a bug, he ran about for 70 minutes, also had two good chances to score. He did well. 80 minutes and debut boy S Arbothnout had a satisfactory match wasting a couple of chances,[only joking] and hitting the bar, replaced by the muscular, fast running Joe Gibney back after being away for a head transplant which was successful and functional. Kilroot Team. Robin Brown, Graham McCann, Philip Burch, Alan Manderson, Harper Calvert[cap] David Brown, Steven Kinnon, James Phearson, Gavin Cairns, Andy McIlwrath, [70Craig Wright] Stephen Arbothnout [80 Joe Gibney]

Kilroot Win On Penalties

Posted by Gary Millar at Oct 20, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Kilroot away to Drummond Utd Res in the second round of Junior Cup at Limavady. A big sticky pitch which made good football impossible. On 15 mins B A had a great chance to score,he beat the last defender round keeper put ball into side netting from a tight angle.should have done better. Kilroot keeper Priestly made two crucial saves in the first half, the most important one a penalty kick awarded in the 37 min, a dubious decision by all accounts but a great save with a hint of justice attached to it. Drummond finished the stronger in the first half and Kilroot were glad to hear half time whistle. The second half 55 mins another great chance for B A ,the home keeper made a great save with his feet, slick picked up the rebound and from 21 yards was just wide of the upright with the keeper nowhere. 70 mins Adams came on for the unlucky B A . From a Drummond corner McClean cleared of Kilroots line. 80 mins Meek came on for the very tired McClean. 82 mins Puskas clean through on right but shot wide. 85 mins and the goat doing a Barthezs lost possession ,the Drummond forward with a big empty net could not miss, the Ref saved the day giving a foul for hand ball. 86 mins Slick had a great shot saved by the Drummond keeper. 90 mins all squar. 20 mins extra time and the only thing of note was Burch replacing the flaked out Adair. 110 mins all squar and so to penalties. Drummond won toss and went first. Walker 1 Higgins 1 Boyd 1 McConnell. 0 Crown 0 Clawson 1 Duncan 1 McElnea 1 Thomas 1 Adams 1 ------------------------ 4 4 Sudden death Rankin 0 Mathers 1 --------------------- 4 5 Kilroot win 5-4 on penalties. A good all round performance with plenty of effort and all the players deserve a big pat on the back for reaching the third round of the Junior Cup. A big THANK YOU to Gary Mulholland for doing a sound job the last three weeks and a undefeated spell at that, many thanks. Kilroot Team.
