Surrey County Cup Final U16

An unprecedented third Surrey County Cup final victory on the trot was not to be as Westfield, within a minute of securing the win, were hit by a very late late equaliser to take the game into extra time and penalties. ‘Field put in a superb display in the first half but paid the price for not making their chances count, they should have seen them at least 3 goals up by half time such was their dominance. An early free kick from Stuart Pain had given ‘Field the lead, they built on that by pinning Ashford back for most of the half, Mike Tasker hit the post and will feel he should have done better and several headed chances should have been converted. The second half was more even but Keeper Billy Inwood who looked dominant throughout was only called upon to make one save ‘Field having a couple of guilt edge chances to strech their lead. The last ten min’s was a different story Ashford went for broke played three up front and pushed ‘Field back, they hit the bar a couple of min’s from time and their chance of victory appeared to have gone. But the next attack saw the ball to break to sub Matt Ahearn his cross shot gave Inwood no chance in the ‘Field goal and forced extra time. The sides could not be seperated in added time so on to penalties. After 5 each the scores were tied on 3 all Ashford taking the cup 6-5 on sudden death

Westfield: Inwood, Pestle, Dilena, Cooper, Parrington, Pain, Lovesey, Smart, Tasker, Locke, Black
Subs: Sexton, Flynn, Godsave, Harding, Davis.

Westfield 2 Croydon Athletic 2 (Westfield won 4-2 on pens)

‘Field’s progressed to their third consecutive Surrey County Cup final on Sunday after a hard fought penalty victory over a very strong Croydon side.
‘Field started very strongly and a superbly struck dipping volley from Daniel Locke deservedly put them in the driving seat.
It was Locke again who stretched ‘Field’s lead latching on to Liam Pestle’s through ball to calmly dispatching the second.
‘Field’s success was based on excellent defending Harry Cooper, Joe Dilena and sweeper Nick Flynn all having solid games as they shackled Croydon’s potentially match winning strike force. A satisfying first half ended with ‘Field leading 2-0.
Croydon came strongly after the break and pressed ’Field back for periods. Just as it looked like they would not break through a loose ball was only half cleared and Croydon were back in the game. A rash challenge then earned Croydon’s Terry Fennessy a Red card and ‘Field appeared to be closing in on victory before a angled shot beat the otherwise excellent Billy Inwood to force extra time.
Both sides had one clear chance to win it in extra time Sam Black going close for ‘Field.
On to penalties and Locke, Pestle, Mike Tasker and Cooper all scored for ‘Field with the impressive Inwood making a fine save and one player blasting wide to secure ‘Field’s place in the final.

Team: Inwood, Pestle, Flynn, Cooper, Dilena, Tasker, Davis, Lovesey, Smart, Locke, Black Subs: Sexton, Pain, Harding.

Congratulations to Liam Parrington who made his England Under 16 debut vs Scotland after being in the squads for the games against Holland & Germany earlier this month.
The club are really proud of Liam's achievement he is a great lad with good atitude and we wish him every success in the future.
Liam joined Westfield as an 11 year old centre forward but was quickly converted into a classy centre back/sweeper a position in which he excelled. He played there for 5 years appearing 100 times and scoring 11 goals for Westfield before being picked up by West Ham last year. This year has been a particularly good one for him not only playing for England but also being offered a YTS at West Ham.
Well done and keep up the good work Liam!!!
