2018 SEASON TEAM RECORD

2018   OPEN DIVISION CIF PLAYOFFS - Beat San Marcos 6-2 and Rancho Bernardo 13-9 but lost to Torrey Pines  3 to 4 and 6-7.

2018 AVOCADO WEST LEGUE Runnerup, League record of 12 and 3, losing to Torrey Pines three times.

2018 OVERALL RECORD:  23 - 10.

HILL TOP TOURNAMENT:     4 - 1, Championship game rained out.

NORTH COUNTY TOURNAMENT   2 - 3 

LIONS TOURNAMENT:  3 - 1

The La Costa Canyon High School campus opened in September of 1996.  The end of the 2018 season marked the Mavericks 22nd season of baseball.  Twenty two seasons have produced an impressive array of CIF Championships, league championships, tournament victories, and national rankings.  The list of accomplishments includes:

One CIF Division II Championship - 2012
Two CIF Division I Championships - (2003 and 2004)
Two CIF Open Division 2nd Place finish (2014 and 2015)  
Two CIF Division I 2nd place finishes (1997 and 2008)
One CIF Open Division Semi-Final finish (2013). 
Six Avocado league championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 02, 03, 10)
Six Avocado West league championships (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017)
National Number One ranking (2003 by studentsports.com)
Cal-Hi sports State Number One ranking (2003)
Two top-five Cal-Hi sports state rankings (2003 = #1, 2004 = #4)
CIF record for the most wins in one season at 32 (2003)
CIF record for the most consecutive wins at 27 (2003)

Selected to play in first ever high school baseball game at Petco Park (2008 vs RB) 
Overall cumulative school record is 494-207-2 (.703.7).
In 2003 Cal Hi sports named Justin Machado as its California State High School Baseball Coach of the Year. In 2010 Coach Machado was recognized for reaching a milestone 300th career win.  In early 2015 Coach Machado reached the 400 career win mark.
The Mavericks have never had a losing record and they have advanced to the CIF playoffs every year, reaching the CIF Division I finals in 4 of their first 14 years. In 2011 the Mavericks lost in the semi-finals in their first Division II appearance and in 2012 the Mavericks beat Rancho Bernardo for their first CIF Division II Championship. In 2013 the Mavericks reached the semi-finals of the first Eight team Open Division CIF Playoffs. In both 2014 and 2015 the Mavericks lost in the Finals of the Eight team Open Division CIF Playoffs.

The 2016 College & MLB Alumni updates are available by clicking the Maverick Alumni menu item on the left,   Paul Oseguera (2002),  Danny Bethea (2008), Garrett Smith (2008), Garrett Hughes (2009), Will Swanner (2010) Michael Swanner (2010) and Phillip Evans (2011) continue their pursuit of a professional baseball career. On August 12, 2010 Will Swanner became the first Maverick to be signed by a Major League team right out of La Costa Canyon High School. In June of 2011 Phillip Evans became the second Maverick to be signed by a Major League team right out of La Costa Canyon High School. In June of 2016 Mickey Moniak was the number one pick in the MLB draft and signed with Philadelphia.

MAVERICK ALUMNI PLAYING PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL

2018 In his third year of professional baseball Mickey Moniak is playing center field for Clearwater Threshers with the Philadelphia organization Advance A League, having been promoted. Through August 12th Mickey Moniak's stats through 99 games are AB 371, R 42, H 98, TB 138, 2b 24, 3b 2, HT 4, RBI 47, BB 20, SO 92, SB 6, AVG .264, OBP 300. Over the final 52 games Mickey hit .302 with 24 extra base hits. 2017 In his first full year of Professional Baseball, the No: 1 pick in the entire draft, selected by the Philadelphia Phillies, put in a sold year at the Single A affiliate Lakewood Blue crabs in the Southern Atlantic League in New Jersey. G 123, AB 466, R 53, H 110, 2b 22, 3b 6, HR 5, RBI 44, TB 159, BB 28, SO 109, SB 11, CS 7, OBP 264, SLG 341, BA 236. 2015 After one and one-half seasons in Japan; Paul Oseguera (2002) is back with Reynoso in the Mexican Major division baseball league. On Friday April 10, 2015 in Tijuana, Paul pitched 5 and 2/3rd of no hit, no runs; before an error and a bloop single to right allowed one unearned run to score. Tijuana tied the game in the bottom of the 9th but Reynoso rallied to win 6-4 in 13 innings to hand Tijuana their first loss of the year. Last week Paul pitched seven strong innings but the Hawks lost 1-2. Will Swanner (2010) C is with the Modesto Nuts of the Class A Adv Ca League, G 43, AB 160, Avg .269, R 21, 2b 7, 3b 3, HR 3, RBI 21, BB 19, SO 56. Phillip Evans (2011) Inf is with the St Lucie Mets Class A adv Fl State League, G 42, AB 153, R 14, 2b 6, HR 1, RBI 16, BB 12, SO 18, AVG .294. 2013 Paul Oseguera (2002) in July of 2013 signed with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, one of 12 Japanese Professional teams. He pitched well enough with a 3-1 record to be invited back for the 2014 Spring ball. He starte 2013 pitching for Reynosa in the Mexican League. He was selected to the All-Star team and finished 8-7 with a 3.00 ERA in 19 starts. He had 124 strikeouts in 123 innings with only 37 walks. Paul was leading the league in ERA and strikeouts when his contract was purchased by a Japanese Major league team. Will Swanner (2010) is a catcher playing for Modesto in the California league. Will is hitting .240 with 9 home runs, 15 doubles and 25 rbi's. Michael Swanner (2010) is a pitcher in his first pro season at Danville of the Appalachian League, in three appearances he has one save and a 2.45 ERA. Phillip Evans (2011) Inf 2012 Paul Oseguera (2002) is pitching again for the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic Independent Professional League. In 19 games Paul had a 10-3 record, 3 complete gmees, an ERA of 2.31, with 113 strike outs, only 29 walks, and allowing only 29 earned runs. In his last three games in August, Paul is 3-0, did not allow a single run in 21 innings, while walking only 6 and striking out 25. Scott Clement (2004) is playing this year with El Paso of the Texas Independent League. Scott in 17 games had 65 at bats, H 18, HR's 3, rbi's 15, and an AVG .276. Will Swanner (2010) was promoted to the Rockies Single A club in Asheville. G 80, AB 293, H 94, HR 15, RBI's 60, AVG .321. Phillip Evans (2011) is playing with the Mets' Single A squad in Brooklyn. G 62, AB 248, H 60, HR 5, RBI's 24, AVG .242. 2011 Paul Oseguera (2002) is back with the Bridgeport Bluefish. On June 17th Paul (5-2) pitched 6 and 2/3rds innings of no hit ball as Bridgeport held on to win 2-1. Paul finished the season with the following numbers: Games started 20, CG 1, Wins 11, Losses 5, IP 113.1, BB 47, SO 102, ER 57, ERA 4.53. Mike Kenney (2004) is playing with the Inland Empire high single A team in the Angel organization. Mike in 43 appearances has thrown 71.0 innings, with BB 22, K's 56, a record of 5-6, and an ERA of 5.07. Scott Clement (2004) is playing Independent Professional League baseball in Texas, with Grand Prairie, and Rockland. In 35 games with Rockland Scott had AB 135, H 35, HR 1, rbi's 19 and a batting average of 275. Will Swanner (2010) After extended spring training in Arizona with the Colorado Rockies organization, and he is now back with the Casper Wyoming rookie league team. In 42 games, AB 156, H 27, HR 10, RBI 23, AVG .269. Phillip Evans (2011) signed late but got a taste of professional baseball: Kingston A (Mets) G 3, AB 11, H 4, rbi's 3, AVG .364. Gulf Coast rookie (Mets) G 4, AB 15, H 5, rbi's 1, AVG .333. 2010 PAUL OSEGUERA (2002) has been picked up by the Oakland A's and assigned to their High A Stockton affiliate. On June 12th Paul pitched 6 innings, allowed 1 earned run on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 9. Through July 4th, and six starts, Paul was 2-3, with 14 walks, 33 strike outs and a 5.18 ERA. After being released by the San Francisco Giant organization in Spring training he initially signed with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic Independent Professional League. In four starts Paul had a record of 2-1 and an ERA of 2.33. In his last two starts Paul went seven innings, allowing no earned runs on only 3 hits while walking none and striking out 4; and then going eight innings, allowing only 1 earned run on seven hits and one walk while striking out 2. On July 9th Paul was reinstated with the Bridgeport independent league where he upped his overall record to 4-3 with a 2.52 ERA. MIKE KENNEY, (2004) In 2011 Mike is with the Inland Empire 66ers and has a 1-2 record with an ERA 5.77 over 34 innings. In 2010 Mike got to pitch for the California Angels in a Cactus league spring season game. Mike started the season pitching 4 games for the Rancho Cucamonga of the California A league. Mike has been transferred to Cedar Rapids of the Midwest Class A league. In 16 relief appearances he has pitched 21.1 innings with 5 saves, a 2-0 record 4 walks, 17 strike outs and a 2.11 ERA. PAUL MACALUSO, (2000) returned to Italy for another year of Professional Baseball. SCOTT CLEMENT, (2004) is playing with St George (Independent) G 32, AB 85, H 21, HR 1, RBI 16, AVG. .282. WILL SWANNER, (2010) after signing with the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 12th, Will was assigned to the Casper Wyoming Rookie League affiliate. In his first 18 games he has AB 78, R 14, H 23, 2b 4, HR 7, RBI's 13, AVG .303, and SLG% of .632. 2009 MIKE KENNEY, (2004) has been assigned to the Los Angeles Angels Single A affiliate in Rancho Cucamonga of the California Single A League. In Twenty six Appearances and 39.1 innings pitched Mike has a record of 0-1, H , R , BB 20, SO 34, and an ERA of 4.35. On April 28, 2009 against the San Diego Padre affiliate the Lake Elsinore Storm, Mike pitched 2.33 innings, allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, walking 1 and striking out 2. Rancho Cucamonga visited the Lake Elsinore team for a weekend series on Friday May 22nd through Monday May 25th. PAUL OSEGUERA, (2002) stayed with the San Francisco extended Spring Baseball squad in Arizona, before being assigned out to the Augusta, Georgia Minor League Team. In a brief stint Paul pitched in 3 games, 19.0 inninngs, walking 5, striking out 25, while posting a 1-1 record with a 1.89 ERA. After being promoted back up to high Single A affiliate in San Jose, Paul started 7 games, pitching 40 innings while allowing 11 walks, and striking out 31, and starting with a 2-4 record and a 4.5 ERA. PAUL MACALUSO, (2000) returned to ITALY for another year of professional basebal and this year talked Jake Blalock of Rancho Bernardo in to going with him after JESSE SCHMIDT (2000) decided not to go back to ITALY for another year. 2008 PAUL OSEGUERA, LCC (2002) has been promoted to the Double A Connecticut Defenders affiliate of the San Francisco Giants playing in the Northern Division of the AA Eastern League. Paul finished the year with a couple stints on the disabled list with blister problems but he pitched in 19 games, with 8 starts, a 4.58 ERA, 3 wins with 2 losses, and stuck out 45 while walking only 29. MIKE KENNY, LCC (2004) was assigned to the Los Angeles Angels Arizona Rookie squad. Mike pitched in 16 games, had a 2-1 record, and in 18.2 innings of work he allowed 17 ER, 22 H and 9 BB while striking out 12. JESSIE SCHMIDT (2000) AND PAUL MACALUSO (2000) were once again playing professional baseball in ITALY. 2007 PAUL OSEGUERA. LCC (2002) has been promoted to the Single A San Jose Giants which plays in the California Advanced Single A league with the Lake Elsinore Storm. www.sjgiants.com Paul got his first start of the year on Sat. Apr 7th against Stockton. He went five innings, striking out 5, walking none, and giving up 3 earned runs on 3 hits. He got a no decision as San Jose lost the lead, rallied to tie, and then won it in the 13th inning. On Apr 12th Paul got the start in the home opener, going 5 & 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run, 3 hits, no walks and striking out 4, but another no decision as the Giants won in the bottom of the 16th inning. On April 18th Paul notched his first win by throwing another strong five innings, walking one, striking out 4 and allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits. On April 23 at Rancho Cucamonga Paul put in another quality start, pitching 5 shut out innings, on 3 hits, 1 BB and 5 strike outs. He left with a 4-0 lead but the San Jose bull pen could not hold the lead. On May 9th Paul pitched another 5 scoreless innings before yielding in the 6th inning to the relief pitchers who once again could not hold the lead. After 7 starts Paul is 2-1, and an Earned Run Average of only 2.72. Over 36.1 innings he has allowed 11 Earned Runs on 32 Hits, with only 2 HR's, while allowing only 4 walks while striking out 30. San Jose comes down to Lake Elsinore on June 7th-10th. JESSE SCHMIDT (LCC Class of 2000 is awaiting a Visa to go play professional baseball in Italy. 2006 PAUL OSEGUERA. LCC Class of 2002, four years at UCLA, drafted in the 16th round by San Francisco. Paul was assigned to the the Northwest short season in at Salem-Keiser, Oregon. In his first year of professional baseball Paul appeared in 16 games, with 29.0 innings pitched, posting a record of 2 wins, 1 loss, 2 saves, a 3.72 ERA, allowing 25 hits, 12 earned runs, 9 walks and 39 strike outs. JESSE SCHMIDT, LCC Class of 2000, two years at Palomar and one year at Sacramento State: In March of 2006 Jeese was back in Arizona for Spring Training with the Chicago Cubs Minor League camp trying to move up to the AA level as an outfielder. After an injury Paul did not get the promotion to AA and opted to go back to Sacramento State to get his degree. He can still play ball and was recruited by the Fullerton Flyers of the Golden baseball league to play right field. In a recent series at San Diego State stadiym against the Surf Dogs Paul hit well and played a strong outfield. In 5 games and 16 at bats he had 7 hits, 1 2b, 1 3b, 4 rbi's, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. In fifty games he batted .246, with an on base percentage of .359, AB 175, R 27, H 43, 2b 13, 3b 2, HR 3, RBI 22, BB 30, SO 40, and SB 5. In 2004 he played his second year of professional baseball with the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic Single A League. Jesse had one game where he went 3 for 4, 1 2b, 1 3b, and 4 rbi's. In 112 games with 410 at bats, Jesse hit .263 with 19 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs, 52 runs scored, 55 rbi's, 61 walks, 84 SO, and 10 stolen bases. Pitcher Jesse English of RBV High was also on this team. In 2003 Jesse played the short Single A season with the Salem Oregon Rookie ball team affiliated with the San Francisco Giants organization. Jesse played in 51 games, with 167 at bats, 42 hits, 4 home runs, 18 runs batted in and a .251 batting average. At Sacramento State Jesse set a new school record for hitting in 24 consecutive games. He finished with 81 hits, 53 runs scored, 16 Home Runs, 55 runs batted in, 16 steals and 12 outfield assists. 2005 PAUL JACINTO, Class of 1998 and a 2004 graduate of BYU, In 2005 he was invited to the San Diego Padres 2005 Spring camp but he was one of the final cuts. He had other offers but decided to ask his girl friend to marry him. In 2004 he signed with the Quebec Capitals of the Independent Northeast League. In nine starts Paul finished the year at 8-0, with a 0.79 Earned Run Average. In sixtynine innings Paul struck out 44 and walked only 8.

Year of the Falcon

  Torrey Pines edged out La Costa Canyon 7-6 in another close game to knock the Mavericks out of the 2018 CIF Open Division Playoffs.

  The Falcons upped their record to 28-6 with five wins against the Mavericks who finished at 23-10. 

   The Mavericks knocked out Avocado East League Champion San Marcos 6-2 and Palomar League Champion Rancho Bernardo 13-9 but the Mavericks could not beat Avocado West League Champion Torrey Pines as the Falcons won the 2018 Open Division Championship with an overall 29-6 record. 

  The Mavericks string of four straight Avocado West League Championships was broken, but a rivalry is strengthened if the other team wins a few.

2018 College Highlights

  CAMERON KURZ, the UC San Diego closer has helped the Tritons to get back to the NCAA Division II national championship series for the second straight year.
