An NRLL Minor League showdown under the Benevento lights went the Scrappers way as they knocked off the Thunder, 2-1, on Friday night.

The Thunder fired up the offense in the first inning, scoring the game’s first run when Nolan Pierce singled. But they would manage just two hits the rest of the day.

A Xander Villareal sacrifice fly in the second pulled the Scrappers even and James Wyatt’s fourth-inning RBI single accounted for what proved to be the decisive run.

Nalo Benedict was the winning pitcher. He allowed two hits and no runs over five efficient innings, striking out nine and walking one. Branden Levine took the tough loss for Thunder. He allowed three hits and one run over a brilliant 3.2 innings of work, striking out eight and walking one.

All 9-year-olds, as well as all 10s and 11s not currently on a Majors roster, must attend the Majors tryout in order to be eligible for the 2020 Majors draft. The tryouts will take place Saturday, June 8, at Benevento Park, starting at 9 a.m. Players should arrive 15 minutes early to check in. If you are unable to attend, you need to contact NRLL Player Agent Ed Cady at nrll1952@comcast.net.

Players who want to be considered for NRLL’s 10-year-old Williamsport Team are required to attend the tryout that will take place on Sunday, June 9, at 9 a.m. at Benevento Park. Players should arrive 15 minutes early to check in. Attendance is required in order to be considered for this team.

North Reading Little League is offering a fun opportunity for youngsters to play baseball and represent North Reading this summer.

Registration is now open for the 2019 Jimmy Fund Season, which features three age divisions – 8/9, 9/10, and 11/12 – and features a 10-12 game schedule with NRLL teams playing against other local towns. The regular season runs from early July through early August, followed by a short playoff, with most games scheduled for weeknights. Home games are played at Benevento Park; away games are usually no more than 15 minutes away.

The cost is $110 per player, and the signup link is below.
