11's lose two tough ones in the Finals

The team lost a tough one to a walk off homer by Saddlebrook. The team came back and played a great game against Saddle Brook but unfortunately lost 2-1. Hats off to the team, coaches and parents. We are proud of you.. We will get them next year...

8's lose a tough one to Little Ferry

Congrats to our 8 yr olds with an opening round win over Caldwell. The 8 yr olds lost a tough in Lyndhurst. The team won a 9 inning game against Teaneck Saturday and then lost a game to Little Ferry, Great job to all the coaches and players and families.. Keep up the great work and see ya next year.

District 12's go undefeated in pool play

The Wood-Ridge/Moonachie Little League 12 year old all stars completed District 5 pool play undefeated, going 6-0 and finishing as the top seed in the final 4 championship round. The locals were the only team out of 14 Leagues from 11 different towns to finish undefeated. The finals begin a double elimination round leading to the eventual District 5 Championship and the right to represent the District in the Sectionals in Livingston. The finals begin on Monday July 12, 2004 at 6:00PM, with the Wood-Ridge/Moonachie team facing off against Lyndhurst National. All finals games are being hosted by the Wallington Little League at their field. The schedule for the finals is as follows: Mon July 12, 2004 6:00PM Wood-Ridge/Moonachie vs. Lyndhurst National 8:00PM Wallington vs. Lyndhurst American Wednesday July 14, 2004 6:00PM Losers of Monday’s games 8:00PM Winners of Monday’s games Friday July 16, 2004 7:00PM Teams to be determined Saturday July 17, 2004 7:00PM Possible Championship Game Sunday July 18, 2004 7:00PM Championship Game if necessary Game #1 Saturday June 26, 2004 at Wood-Ridge Wood Ridge 2 North Arlington 0 WR/M opened their District Pool Play with a 2-0 victory over North Arlington. Winning Pitcher Tony Veltri was solid on the mound giving up only 2 hits and 1 base on balls while striking out 4. Tony also helped himself with 2 hits and blasting a solo home run over the left field net. Veltri was helped by a solid defensive effort by the locals led by first basewoman Shannon Sullivan’s 8 putouts and a leaping over the head catch by right fielder Giorgio Scalone. Other offensive stars included Danny Connor, Sean Cody, and Tommy Lacey reaching base twice each. The locals other run was scored by Alex Aitkens with some aggressive baserunning. Game #2 Sunday June 27, 2004 at Wood-Ridge Wood-Ridge/Moonachie 2 Rutherford National 1. The locals once again played a close game coming away with a 2-1 victory over a strong Rutherford National team. Alex Aitkens was up to the task as the winning pitcher surrendering only 5 hits with 6 Strikeouts and no walks. Alex was the hitting star also blasting a 2 run homer for the winning margin. Danny Connor also reached base twice for the locals. The defense was superb led by Tommy Lacey’s 3 assists at shortstop and Tony Veltri’s 6 Put Outs at firstbase. The highlight of the day was a 1-6-3 double play turned by Aitkens, Lacey, and Veltri. Game #3 Wednesday June 30, 2004 at Carlstadt Wood-Ridge/Moonachie 19 Lodi 4. The bats really came alive for the young sluggers against Lodi banging out 16 hits in defeating Lodi 19-4, and pushing their pool play record to 3-0. Winning pitcher Tony Veltri gave up only 2 earned runs on 4 hits, 4 base on balls and 7 strikeouts. The hitting attack was led by 4 home runs. Alex Aitkens had 2 hits including one of the home runs, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI’s. Danny Connor also had one of the homers as part of his 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Shannon Sullivan capped a memorable night with 2 home runs in the same inning as part of her 4 hits good for 3 runs scored and 6 RBI’s. Sean Cody chipped in with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Nick Romero also reached base 3 times to help lead a balanced attack. Game #4 Tuesday July 6, 2004 at Garfield Wood-Ridge/Moonachie 10 Garfield National 0 Winning Pitcher Shannon Sullivan was nearly perfect facing only one batter over the minimum and throwing a no-hitter in leading the locals to a 10-0 mercy rule victory over Garfield National. Shannon gave up no hits, no walks, and struck out 5. Tony Veltri went yard again with a grand slam home run to ice the game. Tommy Lacey had 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Alex Aitkens doubled for one of his 2 hits 1 run scored and 1 RBI and reached base 3 times. Robby Francis and Sean Cody scored 2 runs apiece to help lead to locals to a 4-0 record in pool play. Game 5 Wednesday July 7, 2004 at Carlstadt Wood-Ridge/Moonachie 5 Carlstadt 0. With the bats tied up by a hard throwing pitcher from Carlstadt the locals resorted to pitching and defense again to come away with a 5-0 victory over Carlstadt. Winning Pitcher Tony Veltri pushed his personal tournament record to 3-0 by throwing a complete game shut out giving up only 4 hits 4 base on balls while striking out 6. Nick Romero reached base twice for the locals while the top five batters in the lineup all scored one run with disciplined plate appearances, aggressive base running (led by Tony Veltri’s steal of home) and a couple of timely hits. Defensively, the locals turned in another double play with a sweet 4-6-3 double play started by Tommy Lacey at 2nd base, a strong relay throw to first by shortstop Alex Aitkens and a nice scoop at first base by Shannon Sullivan. Aitkens also went deep into the hole at short and threw out a would-be Lodi hitter from his knees. The victory pushed the team’s record to 5-0 in pool play. Game #6 Thursday July 8, 2004 at Lyndhurst Wood-Ridge/Moonachie 8 Lyndhurst American 4. Finishing pool play undefeated and securing the top seed in the final four, the locals came away with an 8-4 victory over Lyndhurst American. Winning Pitcher Danny Connor, pitching in his first tournament game did an outstanding job allowing the locals to set up their pitching staff for the finals. Danny allowed 7 hits, 4 base on balls and struck out 3 in 5 innings of work holding down a strong Lyndhurst American lineup. Tony Veltri was the hitting star with 3 hits including another long home run over the left-filed fence and 3 RBI’s. Alex Aitkens had 2 hits good for 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Sean Cody 1 hit and 1 RBI, Thomas Fugnitti 1 hit 2 runs scored, and Tommy Lacey 1 hit and 2 runs scored, along with Eddie Lopez reaching base 2 times all helped the locals remain undefeated. Injured All Star Jennifer Keller is working hard at practices and rehab to get her broken leg back into playing shape. The team is eagerly awaiting her return.
