OWLL FAQ

Posted by Margaret Bond at Jan 10, 2013 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

  Question   Answer

What are the age groups for each division?   OWLL Divisions
Tee ball (ages 4 and 5)
AA (age 6 and 7)
AAA (age 8)
Minors (ages 9 and 10)
Majors (ages 11 and 12)
See the website for your child's league age by their exact birthdate.
Where do we play?   Tee ball (ages 4 and 5), AA (age 6 & 7) and AAA (age 8) divisions play at the Wyndmoor complex on Traymore Ave.  Minors (ages 9 and 10), Majors (ages 11 and 12) play at the Oreland complex at Enfield and St. Clair Roads.
What equipment does my child need?   Each player should purchase a glove, cleats (plastic only - no metal), baseball pants, batting gloves and an athletic supporter (mandatory for catcher).  Many players own a bat and batting helmet so they can practice on their own.  Some players wear a heart guard or protective shirt for additional protection.
What equipment will be provided by OWLL?   Balls, helmets, uniforms (hat, shirt, socks) and a set of catcher's equipment (excluding athletic supportor) are provided by OWLL.  Some divisions have community bats.
Are sneakers ok or does he/she need cleats?   Sneakers tend to slide on dirt or wet grass and provide little protection to ball impact.  Plastic soled cleats (not metal) are strongly encourgaged.
Do we get a uniform and what’s included with it?   OWLL will provide a hat, shirt and socks.  Coaches distribute shirts based on team fit and not uniform number.
What size glove should I buy?   The glove should fit comfortably, open/close easily, and not be too heavy to quickly move to receive a catch.  The biggest issue with gloves is not breaking them in adequately enough to squeeze a catch.
Can my son play up?   Playing up has been historically more unsuccessful and is not condoned by the league.  Removing a child from their peer group typically increases anxiety which affects confidence and performance.  Baseball is about building confidence over the entire season.
Can my son request a specific position?   As players mature, they usually gravitate towards a position they're comfortable with.  Coaches have the  responsibility to determine where each player can play safely and affectively, which is influenced by the roster of their team.
When will we hear from a coach for my child's team assignment?   Usually around mid-March coaches begin contacting parents to advise of the team roster and practice schedules.
When do practices start?   Generally a month to 3 weeks prior to the season opening.
What days are practices?   OWLL tries to mimic the game schedule by having 1 weeknight practice and 1 Saturday practice up until the season starts.  During the season, practice is more limited because of field availability and makeup games due to weather.  Your coach will likely schedule a specific date for practice depending on field and team availability.
How many games a week do they play?   Your child will likely play 1 weeknight game (6 PM) and 1 Saturday game (various times) when the season begins.  Most fields will have a game or practice scheduled every day.
When do games start? When do they end?   Games begin the weekend of opening day.  Weeknight games begin at 6 PM and generally last 90 minutes.  Saturday games can be at various times of the day and also last 90 minutes.
When will the season start/opening day?  When is season over?    The season usually opens early April around Easter weekend.  The OWLL season ends by mid-June.
When are Little League Tournament Team tryouts?  How do I sign my child up?   Early to mid-June, tryouts are held.  It varies year to year with some divisions requiring a coach recommendation for participation, while others have an open tryout.  Open tryouts will be announced.
During inclement weather, when do I remove my child from the field?   When the golf course storm warning horn sounds, the first rumble of thunder or the first lightning flash.
I think I would enjoy coaching, but don't want to take on more than I can handle.    Every team ends up with two or more coaches, so you would not be alone.  Every effort would be made to pair you up with someone you know or a more experienced coach.
I can help with the snack bar, who do I contact?   See the OWLL Board link for the concessions manager or contact any board member.
