COUGARS FINISH SEASON WITH ANNUAL COUGAR BOWL

Steven Navarro
Most Improved Player: Steven Navarro is dominant on both sides of the ball

 JUNIOR HIGH

SOUTH PHOENIX 34, CENTRAL PHOENIX 14

The Cougars, who had already clinched the conference title, fail to finish the conference season unbeated as they fall to highly motivated & improved South Phoenix Hawks team.  The Hawks had 4 plays of 80 plus yards, including 2 kick returns as they shocked the favored Cougars.  The Hawk defense stopped the Cougar passing game and slowed the running attack.

5TH & 6TH GRADE

COUGARS 32, CITY WEST SOLDIERS 7 (Click here for storyline)

The Cougars returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and had a 70 yard run but otherwise threw only 1 pass and deployed a smothering defense in their biggest win of the season.   Running back Angel Orosco did most of the dirty work teaming up with Brian Lopez and Alajandro Navarro on a ground game that chewed up the clock, giving the Soldiers minimal opportunities to run their offense.

3rd & 4th GRADERS

CASA GRANDE 28, COUGAR PEE WEES 0

Casa Grande comes to town and showed up the Cougar Pee Wee team in their only game of the season.  The Pee Wees had only had a scrimmage and a game vs South this year, their first playing tackle.

Cougars Bounce Back, Beat Sullivan, Win AAU Central
2014 Zeke Vandernault
Breakout: Zeke Vandernault had his best night as a Cougar

Central Phoenix clinches the AAU Central Conference title with it's 28-6 win over rival Sullivan Friday night. The Cougars avenge last seasons loss to Sullivan and win the conference for the 3rd time in 6 years, Malik Taylor scored twice for Central Phoeinx and Tyle Higby also scored on a TD run. The pair teamed up with quarterbacks Zeke Vandernault and Donte Gordon as the Cougar ground game dominated the game.

Defensively, led by Jacob Sharp, the defense shut down Sullivans talented offense and the Cougar line was too big for the Chargers efforts.  The Cougars capitalized on turnovers and miscues byt the Chargers.

Gordon did better at quarterback in the second hald and teamed up with Taylor and Vandernault on key pass plays in the second half as the Cougars pulled away. The Cougars take on South in the seasons final regular season game and could finish the year unbeaten in conference play for the 2nd time in 3 years. Sullivan will be looking to improve to 2-1 as they take on

GUT CHECK: COUGARS TO FACE NEMISIS SULLIVAN
2014 Malik runs hard
The Cougars running game will be key this week

For the past 5 years it's been Central Phoenix vs Murphy (Sullivan) in the AAU central division finals.  Murphy embarrassed the Cougars last season in a lop-sided victory after sweeping the Cougars and Alhambra in the regular season.

The Cougars are coming off their first loss since loosing to Murphy last year, a 28-6 loss to a physical Glendale Cardinals team two weeks ago.  It's the first loss ever by the Cougars to the Cardinals.  The Cougars beat Murphy in two years ago to claim the AAC central.

This years Murphy team is a lot like past teams.  They've won 3 central Titles as have Central Phoenix.  Based out of Sullivan school and coached by the legendary Robert Hart, a PE teacher at Sullivan for decades, the team is populated mostly by Sullivan students and sprinkled with students from other schools in the district.   Murphy won a contreversial game last week over the South Phoenix Hawks and Murphy looked as physical as ever.

The Cougars chances start on the line, where they were manhandled by the Cardinals, with Jacob Sharp being the lone bright spot in the trenches.  Backs Malik Taylor and Edwin Montes were held in check in the first half, but excelled in the second.  Both held their own defensively.  Noticably absent were quarterback Donte Gordon and recievers Tommy Wells & Jose Hernandez.  The passing game just didnt happen.  The Cougars moved the ball only once Wells moved to quarterback, adding strength to the running game.

The series is tied at 3 each, so the winner will will the central and get bragging rights...until next time.

COUGARS GROUND GAME ROLLS

For the first time this season, most of the Junior Cougars were all present for a football game and it's a different team!

The running game played keep-away for the first half,  with a punishing defense led by Ted "Bear" Vall and Kylan "Ky" Hernandez.  Alejandro "Headquarters" Navarro (2), Angel "Chub" Orosco and Brian "Frankenstein" Lopez all scored for the Cougars. The Cougar running game piled up over 200 yards on the ground and kept the ball for more than half regulation time.

Hernandez, Vall and Steven Navarro all had big games on defense. Hernandez forced 4 fumbles and had 3 sacks, Vall two sacks and a forced fumble. Vall and Hernandez sacked and forced fumbles on South first two posessions. Vall and Hernandez totally shut down the South offense, as South didn't cross midfield until the second half.  The Cougars forced another fumble and South never threatened again.
