15U Hustlers Beat WHC Renegades 10-0

Posted by Wayne Main at May 27, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Hustlers broke a scoreless tie in the 3rd inning with two unearned runs and then put a seven spot on the board in the 4th to take control.  Mason Machak (Middletown) led off the 4th with an 11-pitch walk, Tommy McCarthy (Brunswick) played team baseball and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and the Hustlers were off and running.  Jack Duffy (Urbana) blasted a triple over the centerfielder’s head, Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick) launched a one-hop triple off the right field fence, Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) and Alex Cartner (Middletown) followed with singles before Evan Pettyjohn (Boonsboro) unleashed his own triple to dead center.  Itnyre finished with two hits.

The other huge story of the game was the crafty lefty for the Hustlers, Spencer Griffin (St. Johns Catholic Prep).  Griffin got on top of hitters all night throwing a four-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks in the abbreviated five-inning game.

The Hustlers are back in action Thursday evening against the South River Seahawks 16U at Governor Thomas Johnson High School.  First pitch is scheduled for 6pm.

15U Hustlers Take Two from GGB Patriots

Posted by Wayne Main at May 24, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

As has been the theme so often in this young season, the Hustlers struggled to get anything going offensively in game one and fell behind 4-2 heading into the final frame.  That’s when jack Duffy (Urbana) led off with a scorching line drive single to left and beat the throw to second on a fielder’s choice by Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick).  Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg) walked before Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) hit a deep sacrifice fly to center scoring Duffy.  Alex Cartner (Middletown) sent an RBI missile to right center and Evan Pettyjohn (Boonsboro) followed with an RBI single to center.  Before the inning was over the Hustlers scored four runs to account for the final score of 6-4.  Cartner had two hits and Mason Machak (Middletown) doubled.  Jordan Tapley (Smithsburg) got the win on the mound with 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief and three strikeouts.  Noah Tucker (Tuscarora) worked  4 2/3 innings but struggled with his command and was the victim of poor defense.  He only allowed 2 hits but walked seven and struck out five.

The bats showed up in game two to the tune of 15 hits and the Hustlers cruised to a 17-3 win.  Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) tossed a solid four innings (1 ER, 0 BB, 4 Ks) before giving way to Tommy McCarthy (Brunswick) who pitched the final two innings.  Alex Cartner (Middletown) led the way with four hits.  Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg) and Parker each had three.  Evan Pettyjohn (Smithsburg) was on base all five of his plate appearances with two hits, two walks and a hit by the pitch.  Noah Tucker (Brunswick) had a double.

Besides playing regular season games in the Baltimore Metro League, the Chesapeake Regional Amateur Baseball League (CRAB) and the Montgomery County Baseball Association (MCBA), Hustler players are given an opportunity to compete against the best teams regionally and nationally.  The tournaments below are just a few of the events that our boys get to attend to assess how they measure up as a team and as individuals.  If you are serious about the game of baseball, want to improve as a player, get quality coaching and make friendships for life, perhaps this is the place for you.  Call us today at 301-905-7205. image

Hustlers Win Ugly, Stay Perfect!

Posted by Wayne Main at May 21, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Spencer Griffin (St John’s Catholic Prep – 6 1/3, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 Ks) turned in a stellar pitching performance and the 15U Hustlers escaped with a 4-3 win over the 16U Elkridge Hurricanes.  Griffin held a good Elkridge team to one-hit through six innings. Meanwhile the Hustlers struggled to figure out Elkridge starter Ezio Rebechi who limited the Black and Gold to one hit through four innings.  Elkridge made a pitching change in the 5th and the Hustlers scored three times with Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) delivering the clutch RBI single.  Griffin continued to cruise getting a 1, 2 3 sixth inning and sat at only 54 pitches entering the 7th.  That’s when things started to unravel.  The leadoff hitter walked and after a strikeout, the Hustlers uncharacteristically committed a physical mistake (E5) and two mental mistakes (i.e., OFs missing cutoffs) on two base hits.  Griffin left with a 3-3 game but certainly deserved much better.  Jordan Tapley (Smithsburg) came in and recorded the last two outs with the lead run on 2nd base, striking out the final hitter.  Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick) led off the bottom of the 7th with a sharp single to left and Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg) walked.  Elkridge elected to play the odds and walk Parker (Thomas Johnson) intentionally.  After infield popups by the 4 and 5 hitters, Evan Pettyjohn (Boonsboro) battled to a full count before getting hit by the pitch, bringing in Itnyre with the winning run.

The Hustlers run their record to 3-0.  They are back in action Thursday evening against the 16U HCYP Raiders at Mount Hebron HS.
